Rapper Heavy D dies at 44

Dwight Arrington Myers, also known as rapper Heavy D, died Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles coroner’s office.

He was 44.

The emergency room staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center pronounced Myers dead "earlier this afternoon," L.A. Coroner Chief of Operations Craig Harvey said.

Myers gained fame in the late 1980s as part of the rap group Heavy D & the Boyz. Driven by the success of the group's first single, "The Overweight Lover's In the House," Heavy D & the Boyz gained national exposure and became a fixture on the hip-hop scene.

Later Myers would turn to acting. He was cast in bit parts in several sitcoms and movies in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The cause of death is yet to be determined but the coroner's office will begin an investigation.

So sad to lose a music icon. Growing up in the 80s and 90s Heavy Ds iconic voice, style and passion for his craft was a music staple to those of us who loved and admired him. Rest in peace and thank you for the SOUND/MUSIC.

I was just thinking about Heavy D in the light of recent news that In Living Color would return to Fox. Heavy D did both versions of the original show's theme. Very sad news indeed. R.I.P. Heavy D.

What do you mean "these people?" You'd better not be attacking the African-American community! Invariably "these people" (or the more common "you people") is considered derogatory slang aimed exclusively at African-Americans. Tread lightly.

So sad. When I think of Heavy D, I'm reminded of middle school thru my early 30s. Heavy D was only 6 years older than I. It saddens me that people I've grown up with are passing away. RIP Heavy D.
