Overheard on CNN.com: 20 is too many

Duggar No. 20 on the way

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, stars of the TLC’s reality show “19 Kids and Counting,” said Wednesday that they are excited to be expecting their 20th child this spring (their oldest is 23 and their youngest is 2).

But CNN.com readers weren’t ready to celebrate with the Duggars. Instead they took issue with the older children having too much responsibility, bringing more children into an overpopulated world and TLC continuing to support the burgeoning family.

jpv said, “These people are insane. He is doing this to prove his manhood or something. If they wanted these many kids why not adopt? Many [kids] out there need homes. If this guy ever loses whatever job he has we will all be paying for those kids via welfare (if we aren't already). Enough already. “

heresme responded, “They are not hurting anyone. They are not living off your tax dollars. The kids are well behaved and educated. They are living in a loving, intact family. To me, this is far more sane than those women who just can't keep themselves in control and keep having babies from different fathers while living in the projects, not working.”

enevoldsen responded, “Did you ever think that maybe they just really like having kids and being parents? Or is that somehow impossible? Why is it that every person who wants to have more kids than ‘the norm’ in North America is instantly labeled insane.’”

cyclingpete said, “OK! We get it. You can procreate. So do mosquitoes! I think this is an addiction. I’m disgusted! If you are that hip on raising that many children why not adopt or foster and help kids who need a loving home? But, nooooooo. Just keep popping them out. “

evdanker said, “It's a uterus, lady, not a clown car.”

austingrrl said, “If I had 20 cats I'd be called an animal hoarder. What's sad to me is the children are not encouraged to go to a higher learning institute and are stuck in the same cycle as their parents. Marry young, stay ignorant and have baby after baby. Jim Bob is a con artist, declaring his home a church for tax evasion purposes.”

MaryMoe responded, “But he does have a large congregation right there at home!”
Missmannered said, “Hey Duggars. Here's a novel idea! Adopt a kid instead of pumping them out. Since you guys are so good at parenting, why not raise a child that is not from your baby-making machine, who needs a loving home? TLC, stop giving these wackos airtime and money, enough already!”

LisetteQB said, “Vulgar. Selfish. Grotesque. Unethical. Wrong on EVERY level. I wonder how Jim would feel if his wife and this new baby both died during delivery because she ‘submits to him as a godly wife should’ despite the fact that no woman's body should be subjected to the cruelty he's put upon her!? Oh, right, he'd probably just say it's God's will or something moronic like that. They should be ashamed of themselves and their blatant disregard for others.”

MaryMoe said, “I wonder how many kids they would have if HE was birthin' those babies.”

kiste said, “The best contraceptive for them would be probably canceling their show on TV. As long as it runs, they will get enough money to afford even more children and if they were responsible they would consider that our world is terribly overpopulated. Why don't they adopt some more children instead?“

LaceFace said, “Hmm … another baby for the older siblings to raise and take care of. So ridiculous.”

momarer said, “TLC lost it when they aired Jon and Kate. As far as the Duggars, well, just look at the oldest son.....seriously....I bet like father like son. I don't watch the show anymore but have been told that his family is part of almost every episode. I love kids too, but I don't think it’s fair to bring them into the world to say "OK, your 'jurisdiction' (as Michelle puts it) is to do family laundry all day, every day." That's not what a kid deserves when they are brought into this world.”

Cryptic08 said, “Wow. Just wow. This family lives debt free, they were well off WELL before TLC came along. If any of you lemmings did your research you would know that. They are raising their kids to be good upstanding citizens. And yet 95 percent of you want her to be forced to have her tubes tied?

What a bunch of pathetic and nosy misanthropes CNN commenters are. I don't particularly think that what they are doing is the best thing in the world, but I am not them. It is funny to me that you are all so quick to condemn people who are different from you...yes, YOU liberals who proclaim to personify ‘tolerance.’ Yeah, right.”

No Ratner, no Murphy for the Oscars

After movie director Brett Ratner resigned as a producer of this year's Academy Awards show because of an anti-gay remark he made over the weekend, actor Eddie Murphy dropped out as Oscar host. Ratner has publicly apologized for his remark and has met with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

So what did CNN.com readers think about the Oscar shakeup and about Ratner’s remark?

gonehuntin2 said, “I guess he did not get the memo. You can only say the n-word if you are black and the f-word if you are gay. All others will be pummeled into a bloody pulp and your career will be down the tubes.”

Monbois responded, “For your info, gay men do not use the ‘F’ word the way some blacks - certainly not all - use the ‘N’ word. They're both hateful words most people with a brain and any respect for the dignity of others avoids. Clearly you are not one of those people."

joecens responded, “For YOUR info, gay men use b*tch more than f*g but it is still used by gays and its deemed okay. So I agree with this comment that it reeks of double standard in the same breath as the usage of the N word by black people.”

Gutssl100 said, “People are way too sensitive ...”

Dreamabyss responded, “People are way too insensitive ...“

Bannister said, “This is ridiculous. Since when did GLADD become the Big Brother who monitors and correct everyone's thoughts? I have gay friends and even they are offended by this kind of political correctness. We've all had enough.”

Seebothsides said, “It's one thing to be hateful towards other people, but I don't think that Brett Ratner necessarily said those things out of hatred. I think it's just an unfortunate use of language that many people think is acceptable. I don't think it's acceptable, but to get my panties in a twist whenever someone says ‘that's gay’ (or the like) makes me look like an idiot. I'd rather the person using the inappropriate language looks like an idiot. No need for me to draw attention to myself.”

And about Murphy’s departure readers said:

Meatstick4U said, “Good for him. A man of integrity.”

LedRobster said, “I respect Eddie Murphy for standing by his friend.”

srichey321 said, “So much for having what would have been an entertaining Oscars ceremony.”

duryea said, “Get Billy Crystal or Whoopi Goldberg.”

BoBoNmYCoB responded, “Yeah that would have worked in the '90s.”

Blindleader said, “Get Charlie.”

Why are so many people trying to criticize this family? They are an amazing family with ethical values and are well educated. The way I see it, thanks to these parents, there are 20 upstanding, honest, GOOD people added to our society. By all means, I hope they continue to bless our society with such amazing people for as long as God will let them. They go on many mission trips and do a lot to help others. At a time in which our society is plagued by disrespectful, unruly, unneducated and misdirected people, maybe we should be looking to this family as an example. Obviously they are doing something right that the majority of society is not.

My premature daughter (who I had at 25) died after 4 1/2 months in the hospital. I hope they take more of the reality into the situation and stop relying on God to fix every problem, sometimes he doesn't.

Sounds like they'll keep celebrating the each birth of a new child until one ends up dead.. Even Jacob father of Israel stopped at 12 and he had 2 wives and 2 concubines to copulate with. Enough is enough. Close your legs Michelle and stop putting your body thorough the danger of pregnancy.

There are so many of you on here spouting off and being very mean. What is it to you how they chose to raise their children? I don't understand why you feel the need to talk bad about them. I truly think they love God and they are doing what they feel they are guided to do so why not put more energy into raising your own children and let then raise theirs? They don't get state assistance, he works, their home is paid off so it's not like you have reason to talk about them.

There are 7 billion people on this planet and one couple is deciding to add to the overpopulation of this planet by having 20 children. If you want 20 children go to an AIDS orphanage in Africa and do this world a favor. There are too many children in this world that dont have homes as it is.

Actually the Duggars ARE living off your tax dollars- they don't PAY taxes because they claim themselves as a 'private church' and since Jim Bob used to be a 'government official' for his state- he doesn't pay health insurance for his brood. Who do you think then pays those bills? Seriously people- WAKE UP or push away from the keyboard. 20 IS TOO MANY.

and to those saying it's none of our business- this could very well be a valid argument had they not put their 'private business' on a very public display of NATIONAL TELEVISION. Strange how they won't let the children dance or listen to secular music, yet will exploit their daily lives for the likes of every Tom, Dick, and Larry in America to see. Look but don't touch! Not likely. Get off TV and your business will become your own again!
