U.S. soldier gets life for murder of Afghan civilians

[Updated 10:18 p.m. ET] Army Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs was sentenced Thursday to life in military prison with eligibility for parole in 10 years after being found guilty of murdering three Afghan civilians, cutting pieces from their corpses to keep as "souvenirs" and planting weapons on them to make them appear as if they had been killed in legitimate firefights.

[Posted 6:10 p.m. ET] A U.S. Army staff sergeant accused of leading a rogue "kill squad"in Afghanistan was found guilty Thursday of all charges, including murder in the death of  three Afghan civilians.

Happy birthday Marine. That is why I hate military subject blogs on civilan pages. I try to ignore the ignorance but there's only so much I can take. Again I dont approve this soldiers actions but war is unlike anything people experience. When you lose a soldier or Marine, they pick up his/her body and the next thing you do is Charlie Mike. No stopping, no time to think, cry or vent. That takes a toll on you. The very first time we lost a guy, I had to dig deep to not shoot every Iraqi that was in sight. Now a civilian will see that and say i'm crazy but someone who has been through this will understand. Sad thing the more guys you lose the easier it is to cope. There is no telling what this Staff Sgt saw and went through but anyone collecting fingers and ears needs to be pulled off the battlefield and given psychological help. Not sent to Ft Leavenworth to make big rocks into little rocks for the rest of his life

I also salute all of the men and women who serve. Happy birthday Marine- Semper-Fidelity. I want you to realize there are civilans who do not believe this guy should be convicted, just treated for the trama. Here's a guy who was a normal citizen one day and a killer the next. It's time to help these vets. The media needs big stories and the government needs to blame someone. Whether it is a shooting or a business scandal, there is always more to the story than the prosecutor's alleged accusations. They needed a scape goat......and by the way, how many afgans will be sent to life in prison for killing their own people?
Signed a working person, too old to serve who appreciates his freedom.

Another right-wing nutjob defending this filthy creep Gibbs!!! Besides, this obscene war has absolutely nothing to do with any of our rights or freedoms nor with national security, just a money maker for 1% of the population in the US!!! There is absolutely no excuse for what this low-life did in Afghanistan no matter how many right-wing fanatics blog in here to the contrary!!!

Seeing people like 11BravoPapa, Jay and USMC Semper-Fidelity posting in here to take up for this Gibbs guy proves just what a sick society that we're living in. Anyone who condones what this creep Calvin Gibbs did over in Afghanistan can't be all good!

Don't be so judgemental until you have walked in this man's shoes. Many of the solders had no idea what they were fighting for, as a matter of fact, neither do I. Freedom for what? There has to be some major brainwash going on to teach a man how to kill. He just got it all wrong. Go into the military and be sent to battle without proper equipment -l plus when asked what are you fighting for – you have no answer. I feel sad for him as well as the people he killed. Maybe he thought they were his enemy.

You say these soldiers have no idea what they are fighting for. Did it ever occur to you that each and every one of our soldiers volunteered for the service. They must of had some sort of patriotism or ideal to do so. They obviously love their country very much to be willing to put their lives on the line for someone, yes, even like you, who doesn't appreciate their sacrifice. Maybe you should give it a try. And yes, I'm an old war veteran.

Did it ever occur to you bobcat(in a hat), that some of these guys went over for the sake of killing? After all, nihilism is an emotional illness too. Some people do like to kill and that makes hunting such a popular sport. Still what this creep Gibbs did is inexcusable and that's all there is to it, so quit taking up for him!!!

Yes these solders were sworn in to protect the freedom of the USA. Not to go into another country that was NO THREAT to us in the first place and start killing people. This is war. Spoken as one who knows sometimes you don't know who the enemy is. A child can kill you just a quickly as an adult. I agree with Dott. It is long past time that we stop going into war and sending our troops there just because our president, BUSH, wants to kill the man who threatened to kill my daddy. Keep them at home and close our borders then they can do what they were sworn in for. PROTECT THE FREEDOM OF AMERICA. Remember the men who flew the places were in our country already being taught in OUR schools how to kill Americans. We are still where we were on that horrible day. Little or no security for America.

You all point the finger, oh he must be this, oh he must be that. That boy served his country proudly and faithfully for YEARS. He took a finger – They took his friend and Com-rads.. He was sold out and pointed at so the others who pulled the triggers – committed the crimes would get off the hook – lady liberty being pulled - YOU BET! You don't give someone a shot at parole – with a life term – if they are guilty. You give them a shot because you as the jury know he's not – but you have to make a choice. You don't know what happens over there. You don't know the choices and you Don't know the place and time! Read the paper trails all of them... My gosh. Put on uniform – relocate to a tent city in the desert – in a world where they hate you serve over 5 years there. BE told you can't shot first and ask questions later.. and that boy that just drove by on his bike – has been running in-tell for the bad guys. WE are all guilty – if we ain't bring our boys home – we are the ones letting them go through hell and being stuck with these choices.

Whether or not the man gave his life for his country, what he did was plain wrong. It disgusts me how people are granted such power and abuse it. It’s time the USA start fighting battles and fixing problems in their own backyard rather than going other countries to do so The USA is said to be the most powerful country in the world maybe that is perhaps the reason that they want to control everyone else.
