Police: Fraternity pledge severely injured in paddling; 9 arrested

Nine South Carolina college fraternity members were arrested this week on hazing charges, accused of beating and severely injuring a pledge with a paddle, authorities said.

The victim, a Francis Marion University student who was pledging Phi Beta Sigma, was paddled at an off-campus residence on October 23 “to such an extent as to have resulted in serious bodily injury” requiring hospitalization, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

CNN affiliate WBTW, citing investigators, reported that the victim suffered temporary injuries to his kidneys.

Florence County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Nunn told CNN that his office wasn’t releasing details of the student’s injuries, but he said the student had “an extended hospital stay.”

The suspects - three Francis Marion students and six alumni, according to WBTW - were charged with hazing, a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500 and up to a year in jail.

The suspects appeared before a Florence County magistrate and have been released on $5,000 personal recognizance bonds, the sheriff’s office said.

“The arrest warrants allege that the suspects, each individually and collectively, committed the hazing by intentionally inflicting physical harm upon the victim in order for the victim to gain admission to the fraternity,” the sheriff’s office release said.

Nunn said the hospital treating the injured student contacted the sheriff’s office, triggering the office’s investigation.

Jimmy Hammock, international president of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., said the fraternity’s headquarters has suspended the Francis Marion chapter.

“Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. takes any form of reported hazing very seriously,” Hammock said. “Hazing has not and does not represent the tradition and principles of the 97-year history of our fraternity.

“Specifically pertaining to the unfortunate injury of the Francis Marion student, the fraternity has and will continue to work closely with the campus officials and the local police concerning this situation.”

The university did not respond to requests for comment Friday.

How can we have the highest rate of infection in the world and be virtually tied with Romania for that distinction??

@raven...not the total numner of infected, the infection rate...how many carriers of HIV per 1,000. The USA's 2009 rate was .060. Canada and Mexico's was .030. Of course, exact numbers are much higher given that most do not get tested, and the fact that the virus can remain dormant and undectable for years, even as long as 10 years.

Speaking of kidneys, that petroleum jelly you rub on baby rash used to have to be disposed of. Petroleum Jelly is what's left after crude oil is refined into the various products we use like gasoline and diesel fuel. Back when the nazi's were making synthetic gasoline that powered half of their war machine eventually, nazi scientists experimenting on jews at the Bayer AG corporate concentration camp learned through experimentaion that this jelly, once absorbed, disrupts the human kidneys natural functions. They then developed high-tech pharmaceuticals that would be needed for the rest of the baby's life to have any semblence of a healthy life.

'Philip' had to establish the fact that at first, only gay men had aquired HIV. Why? Is "he" aidsophobic...does he "hate" gays or blame them for HIV? No! He hates what deviant gay and bi-gay do to underaged boys...they raype them as they did ME. bear with me as i show why it is that I'm posing as this one good Dr. Alan Cantell, and why it is that I have allowed you folks to go on assuming that I hate gays. There is a method to this madness, let me assure you. The very idea that HIV came from gays, blacks, or monkeys is laughable. But it came from somewhere. And I know for a fact exactly where. ...but first, if you have or know of any parents that do have children with liver damage, PLEASE let them know that their good doktor will prescribe amoxicillan for them. If the child's family has a history of asthsma, the child could easily die and the childs autopsy would not show the real reason why. If the child evelops red spots, has runny poop, sore teeth, swolen toungue and lips, etc. after taking amoxicillin...STOP making them take it. There are more expensive alternatives that aren't near as risky. Plus, about 1/3 of US have staph living in our noses. Amoxicillin allows this simple staph to invade our bodies and kill us, and our children. Childrens liver problems began happening AFTER mothers who breast fed this FDA scedule 'B' (denoting that it's "probably" safe for pregnant women) Thouroughly research any drug...do NOT trust your doktor to do this for you. ty oh...almost forgot. If the child begins hyperventilating, you have about 1/2 hr. to get the child a shot of adrenilin or die.

That is one of many reasons I never joined a fraternity while attending Miami.
Stayed in a dorm for four years.
Never went to a pledge either.
Never liked frat boys and their good ole boy mentality.
Will say, they got all the girls in their corvettes parents bought for them.
And girls loved their yachts up in Fort Laurderville.
I worked in at Republic steel mill in Harrisburg, PA, summers to pay for my schooling and road a motor cycle for four years. 650 Triump Boneville.
Month after graduation, was drafted into the US Army and sent to Viet Nam.
