Truth Squad: Fact checking the GOP debate

CNN's Truth Squad fact-checked some of the claims made at Saturday night's Republican presidential debate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. We'll take a look at some of the questions posed to the candidates, then share with you how they answered the question.

Romney: Repealing health plan will save billions

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney targeted the Affordable Care Act during Saturday's Republican candidates' debate in Spartanburg, South Carolina, saying a repeal would save billions of dollars.

The statement: "A lot of programs we like but we simply can't afford. The first one we'll eliminate, however, we're happy to get rid of. That's Obamacare. And that'll save us $95 billion by my fourth year," Romney said.

Bachmann: CIA interrogation is lacking

The statement: During Saturday night's Republican candidates' debate on national security issues, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said the United States has nowhere to take terrorists for interrogation and said the CIA does not interrogate anymore.

Santorum challenges Obama, Bush on Iran funding

The Statement: "I've been working on Iran since back in 2004 and proposed exactly the things that Herman and Mitt Romney suggested, which was to give money to the rebel forces there to help the pro-democracy movement and put tough sanctions in place. I was opposed by President Bush, and yet we were able to overcome that and pass the Iran Freedom and Support Act. I was able to get that done, and then President Bush didn't provide money for the pro-democracy movement and President Obama cut that money."

The verdict: Misleading

Bachmann challenges administration on deficit

The statement: "In October, we just added another $203 billion in debt. When you consider the last time that Republicans controlled the budget, it was 2007 and debt was $160 billion per year. For every man, woman and child in the United States, it means each of us took $650 in debt for the month of October," Bachmann said.

The words CNN and FactCheck are an oxymoron.

and you think I am going to get more honest coverage on Fox? Ultimately candidates DO make inaccurate and misleading statements – after all they are politicians – and yes many people are dumb enough just to accept those things as truth – so if CNN discovers some key position is misleading, you have a problem with that?

So you dispute the fact that their statements were incomplete or misleading? You believe everything they said word-for-word? You're a good little GOP mindless robot?

Hey, Donald, I realize you have a very black and white world where all conservatives wear white hats and all liberals are hanging from trees, but your little world is built on BS. You want to believe your god of information (FOX) about CNN. Guess what. Last election, during the democratic debates, CNN's truth squad was all over that field for misleading and false statements. And there were plenty. There always are. American politics is now all about fooling the masses and both sides do it. Your hat is grey, Donald. Get used to it.

Couldn't have said it better myself. CNN only scrutinizes Obama when every other new agency does first and even then goes out of their way to soft ball the issue. Take the latest all too political move with the pipeline. Disgusting coverage.

Your comments concerning CNN are "misleading", to borrow the phrase. Yes, CNN is far from perfect, although I find the biggest problem to be shallowness rather than bias. To just throw these charges out against CNN are sill, in that "news" organizations such as FOX are so much worse. At FOX, shallowness of reporting is not as serious as significantly biased and misleading propaganda and an inability to separate editorial from news stories

    @Bullricky and Debbie

First of all, your comments imply that you are both republicans so I'm not surprise by the pointless and irrational comments you two have made. Let's face it, GWB and the GOP gave us two unpaid wars, a whole lot of dead American soldiers and the worst financial crisis in America since the Great Depression and while President Obama has been left with the daunting task of cleaning up the mess, some how you 'all see fit to attack President Obama while defending GWB. No, you people don't really puzzle me because its people like you two who are dividing America with your blatant bigotry and racism. Shame on you!

Democrats controlled both houses from Jan. 2007 till Jan 2009. From Jan 2009 till Jan 2011 Democrats controlled both houses and the presidency. From Jan 2011 till now, they have conreolled the Senate and Presidency. I can't think of one single thing that has improved economically since Jan 2007, can you?
