White House shooting suspect to be charged with assassination attempt

A man accused of firing shots near the White House last week will be charged with attempting to assassinate the president or a member of his staff, a federal prosecutor said Thursday.

Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, 21, of Idaho, was arrested in western Pennsylvania on Wednesday. Investigators believe he was involved in a shooting Friday night that may be responsible for two bullets found on the White House exterior on Tuesday, according to the Secret Service.

One bullet hit a window and was stopped by bulletproof glass, and another was found on the White House exterior, the Secret Service said.

Ortega-Hernandez will be charged with attempted assassination, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jimmy Kitchen said at Ortega-Hernandez's first federal court hearing Thursday.

    I agree with Cindy SF. I paid the utmost respect, just as she states when GW...did...whatever that was he did – and the same respect is paid to President Obama and his administration. This time though, it's the people's choice. And as a hard working tax paying citizen with the right to disagree, I had hope (not tirades and tantrums) with the last presidency, and by God, I have it now. Suck it up and focus. This is America. United we stand, divided we fall.

  6. Yeah, no

    @superfudge1:
    I'd agree with you, except we'd both be wrong. In addition, he's a MAN, and therefore cannot be a "murderess."

    This man does something exceedlingly stupid, and because there is a OWS protest nearby, they assume he was a part of it. You know who else has a large population af people nearby? The Tea Party/GOP.

    Our president's politics have no bearing on this situation; this was an act of terrorism. The accused should be tried, and if convicted, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

    This guy sounds like one seriously deranged individual who needs reprogramming. You can't assassinate anyone who isn't there with a AK-47 which has an effective range of about half of where this idiot fired from. I know that the first Amendment doesn't exclude idiots, but it should.

    I swear. There is a conspiracy theory for everything. The crazy thing here is that he is probably like some of the people that post crazy comments here and other sites online. He just had something happen to him that pushed him over the edge. Lock him up and throw away the key. Screw all of you so-called Americans who still choose to disrespect the POTUS with your blind faith in conspiracies and poor attempts at comedy with the crazy nicknames for Obama. Patriotism isn't something you turn on or off according to which political party is holding office at the time. The only difference between this guy and Hinckley is distance.
