California university to investigate police use of pepper spray

University of California Davis' chancellor Saturday called police use of pepper spray on Occupy protesters "chilling" and established a task force to look into the incident.

The startling video broadcast by CNN Sacramento affiliate KOVR showed an officer, in a sweeping motion, spraying seated protesters point blank Friday before other officers moved in. Eleven people were treated on site for effects of the spray. Two of them were sent to the hospital, university officials said.

"Yesterday was not a day that would make anyone on our campus proud; indeed the events of the day need to guide us forward as we try to make our campus a better place of inquiry, debate, and even dissent," Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi said in a statement.

UC Davis spokeswoman Claudia Morain told CNN that 25 tents were in place Friday afternoon - despite fliers explaining the campus prohibits overnight camping.

After written and verbal warnings, officers reminded the protesters they would be subject to arrest if they did not move their tents, Morain said.

A group of protesters sat on a path with their arms interlocked as police moved in to remove the tents.

At one point, protesters encircled the officers and blocked them from leaving, the spokeswoman said. Cut off from backup, the officers determined the situation was not safe and asked people several times to make room, Morain said. One officer used pepper spray when a couple of protesters and some of the 200 bystanders moved in, she added.

@Big Willie. All the while Eisenhower himself owned several banana plantations in S. America, and sent in the troops to protect them from democratic leaders who made it illegal for foreigners to profit while that country's children starved. toodles

@ Kathy: it is the American middle class that the fascist corporate police state is feeding upon right now. This is the reason that they need to make war: population reduction, natural resources, etc. The reason that they hesitate is because they are stretched so thin; they are in 3 wars outside the country, and are battling their own citizens within! They CAN'T make war anywhere right now, it would be the straw that breaks the camel's back. It isn't that they don't want to, they are unable to. H!!l, they've been at war for 10 years now.

The U S is up against a perfect storm of economic conditions that won't allow it to be in anything but a holding pattern right now; their military is fatigued, the military budget is facing mandatory cuts, the don't want to keep printing money, the morale of the population is low and they're a**hole deep in debt. They don't dare enter into another war right now. So the beast must continue to feed upon itself (the middle class) to sustain the salaries of the corporate executives. More jobs over seas, more tax cuts, more layoffs, all to maintain an unsustainable salary level; its as predictable as night fall. h

Almost no one will state that he advocates a communist economic system.
The call is usually for "spreading the wealth around" or for "social justice," especially, at this time, for the middle class.

@ Kathy: of course! How much farther can you raise food, gas, energy prices before no one can afford them? You can put all the 'security forces' you want in the streets, if I see MY children starving, I'm GOING TO FEED THEM, OR DIE TRYING. You can make book on that.

@ bigwilliestyles, So they're taking us to the proverbial 'edge' in a holding pattern until all other 'eggs' are in the basket, right?

These people who pepper sprayed the OWS students need to be investigated, indicted and brought to justice. Besides, they're giving the police a very bad name by using these brutal tactics. It goes to show just how how much right-wing fanaticism has permeated the upper class of this society!!! Enough is enough!!!

Joey IF loves to post unpopular opinions. He also believes that if you drink alcohol or swallow perscribed pills you deserve to die and if you do not have "common sense" you deserve to be molested and rayped since you must be "interested" in the molester. As for how rich he is, he employs housekeeping "staff" if that answers your question posted above

As I wholeheatedly support these students, I find that the brutal tactics used by the right-wing security forces agaist them to be completely unacceptable and that calls for an investigation which probably won't come if the right-wing fanatics have their way about it!!!

Joey IF also blogs about the "'middle class" which shows how out of touch with reality he is since it is common knowledge that there is no longer a middle class in America.

I firmly believe that those who pepper-sprayed the OWS students need to be both indicted and prosecuted for this outrage!!!
