Occupy targets retailers on Black Friday

The Occupy movement is taking on the biggest retail day of the season, calling on protesters to occupy major retailers on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

"OCCUPY BLACK FRIDAY by occupying/boycotting large chain stores and publicly traded retail" is the message posted on the website stopblackfriday.com.

The movement contends that 1% of the country is making money at the expense of the other 99%.

"The credit cards the 99% overcharge will allow the 1% to enrich themselves gluttonously on the backs of hardworking people who simply want to provide a memorable time for their families," the website says.

"So just imagine what would happen to the 1% if the 99% did not spend on Black Friday."

The site asks protesters to target only "publicly traded large businesses" and support small businesses "that serve our local communities."

The site lists Abercrombie & Fitch, Amazon.com, AT&T Wireless, Burlington Coat Factory, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dollar Tree, The Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Office Max, Toys "R" Us, Verizon Wireless and Wal-Mart as businesses that should be boycotted or occupied.

"We are NOT anti-capitalist, just anti-crapitalist," the site says.

      @John–

Your link simply shows a counter movement by the Tea Party. It still is saying OWS is saying for everyone to boycott, as the TPM is saying for people to BUYcott as in buy and support Black Friday.

Whoa now. We are not allowed to teach logic in how the economy works to OWS. It goes against their protests.

Well JEx, here's your chance; explain to me how the economy works. Explain to me why boycotting using credit cards on Black Friday would cripple our already demolished economy and make people lose their jobs. I'll take a non-response as you admitting that you have no clue what you are talking about and are just angry for the sake of being angry and misplacing your anger on your fellow countrymen who are trying to make this country better.

      Mike,

You clearly have no knowledge of the purpose of Black Friday (and the weekend as a whole) to the EOY Sales for many retailers.

Also, the story mentions boycotting the stores from purchasing entirely, not just use of the credit cards. People not spending money != Stimulating the economy. If you can not understand such a simple concept, then you just perpetuate the idiocy of the OWS "community".

The boycott would not hurt the economy at all, as the article stated OWS is encouraging people to shop locally. the money is still being spent, your point is mute.

      November 23, 2011 at 10:03 am | Report abuse |
    • Mikemo

Welp, wrap it up OWS. One day of boycotting will send our nation down the drain I guess. What is your take on the banking bailouts JEx?

      November 23, 2011 at 10:03 am | Report abuse |
    • Cameron Poe

      Point one,
John the term is the point is moot. Not "mute" If that was the case the point would be silent and invalid.

      Point two,
It is not one day of OWS that is hurting the economy Mike. It is days and days and days of them "occupying" places. Which in turn leads to more overtime for the police, sanitation workers, and other city workers. This costs cities more and more. They OWS people also block patrons from entering local business. Either by physically blocking them or by creating a situation in the areas they are occupying that does not encourage patrons to come and deal with them. Instead customers just go somewhere else or dont go at all.

      And finally,
Why do you bring up the bank bailouts Mike? All of us reasonable CAPITALISTS agree the bail outs were a terrible idea when they happened. We were against them. Capitalism works by survival of the fittest. If the market dictates they fail then they fail. So stop using that silly pointless argument. What you think just because you have finally figured out Keynesian economics are a bad idea don't try and bring the rest of us down too. But congrats on joining the capitalist movement.

Mikemo you are really stupid. Alot of credit cards are issued by small, local banks and credit unions. If you are aware of BoA's troubles it should be obvious to yuo that many Americans have already abandoned big banks and research shows that rend will probably continue in coming years. The average does not have to go around and act like a piece of trash to speak with their dollars. If we do as you losers wish not only do we furthwer damage the econmoy and put more peole out of work but we do not get to enjoy our holiday season to the fullest. These OWS weenies continue to be clueless and hopelessly misguided. First, they squat on Wall Street (and accomplish nothing). Now, they're going to pester the retailers with the end result being to hurt the so-called 99% they foolishly think they're representing.

It's time OWS grows a collective pair and takes their little statement to Washington where it would be more aptly applied.

If you disagree with what people are saying then disprove them. Show some facts. Support your argument. Then people will take you seriously. This is clearly your problem and the problem of OWS. If both of you could figure out how to convey your message (or figure out your message for that matter) Then "The Man" might listen. Instead both of you are fighting like children with no real ideas and no real direction.

This Black Friday is nothing but selling rejected and crappy items at an expensive price to ignorant customers who use their emotions instead of logic. Whenever I purchased any item on Black Friday, it died in a very short time. Just take the example of Playbook, it was rejected by Sprint and Verizon and AT&T. Now the retailers are selling on $199 due to this Thanksgiving special. Is it really worth it? If so, go and waste your money on Thanksgiving.

Why should they have to pay a tax to a government that does not represent them or have true representation in the colonies?
