The Occupy movement is taking on the biggest retail day of the season, calling on protesters to occupy major retailers on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.
"OCCUPY BLACK FRIDAY by occupying/boycotting large chain stores and publicly traded retail" is the message posted on the website stopblackfriday.com.
The movement contends that 1% of the country is making money at the expense of the other 99%.
"The credit cards the 99% overcharge will allow the 1% to enrich themselves gluttonously on the backs of hardworking people who simply want to provide a memorable time for their families," the website says.
"So just imagine what would happen to the 1% if the 99% did not spend on Black Friday."
The site asks protesters to target only "publicly traded large businesses" and support small businesses "that serve our local communities."
The site lists Abercrombie & Fitch, Amazon.com, AT&T Wireless, Burlington Coat Factory, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dollar Tree, The Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Office Max, Toys "R" Us, Verizon Wireless and Wal-Mart as businesses that should be boycotted or occupied.
"We are NOT anti-capitalist, just anti-crapitalist," the site says.
Are you participating in an Occupy Black Friday protest? Send your iReport.
Then don't overcharge your credit cards. Teach your kids that people, not things, are the important part of your family's "memorable time."
I was neutral on the Occupy movement until I read this. It's somehow overreaching and directionless all at once.
Forrest Gump said it best, "Stupid is as stupid does!" These people don't have a clue as to what they're doing!
Okay, enough is enough. Handcuff the idiots and take then straight to jail and only release them after the holidays. They have no reason, no common sense, and are now showing their true colors as total idiots.
Let's shoot them in the streets like they do in Egypt. Because we want to aspire to be like Egypt.
Your comments are an insult to people who have REAL problems, unlike the OWS idiots.
Come on, people. Just because someone doesn't like the fact that there are people richer than them doesn't mean they have the right to impede commerce. And credit card companies only charge what consumers are willing to pay. Fees & interest too high? Don't get a credit card. Try taking responsibility for yourselves instead of crying about the system not giving you a free ride.
So let me get this right. Boycott the retailers on Black Friday where people can save tons of money on Christmas gifts, only to spend more the week after? Also bashing Credit Card companies? It's not the CC companies fault when people spend unresponsibly. Also, as other's said, we should hurt retailers so they can lower their forcasts and layoff hundreds of people who actually do work unlike the Occupy protestors? These Occupy people are the dumbest things on Earth.
About for the 99% to improve themselve to get closer to the 1%. Don't complain but do something for yourself. Many deserve to be in the 99%.
You're in the 99%. Do you deserve it?
I originally supported the movement, but they've fallen way off target. Retailers are not the problem The only people to blaim for the "1%" getting rich from the "99%" who overcharge their credit cards are the ones who overcharge their credit cards.
The concept of picketing CEOs homes and functions is good. Shutting down business only hurts the working class. These folks should be camped out at their Senator and Representative's offices and homes. Get those guys to work instead of keeping regular people from earning a paycheck.
The only thing that they are going to do by shutting down these retailers, if their mission is successful, is to force them to lay off more people. Is that what you want, guys?
During the middle ages when workers rights were at their lowest, the only thing that turned them around was the black plague. It did so because it made the common worker more valuable as the population was low. Seeing that we don't want to go that route, boycotting to make change is a good way to facilitate change.
I guess Target and Best Buy get a pass...
I think this is the point at which Occupy loses the sympathy of the 98% who aren't actually out there protesting. Occupiers are shooting themselves in the foot.
I guess the occupiers also hate poor families who rely on Walmarts Black Friday to even have be able to afford to have a Christmas...
If we don't make a change, you can expect to keep struggling to buy christmas gifts. Either suck it up and protest now, or spend the rest of your life scraping to get by.
Who gives them the right to try and say that a family can't have a Christmas this year because of their political agenda? Are they going to go to every house and explain to crying 5 year olds why Santa didn't come this year?
Oh and I didn't know the end result of this movement was going to make everybody wealthy for the rest of their lives.....
Good thing our founding fathers weren't a bunch of wimps like I'm seeing here. We'd still be under British rule. Believe it or not, your child would love for you to spend quality time in lieu of presents. Your child would thank you if you could break the cycle of poverty and he/she will be able to go to college without becoming a slave to student loans, then never get a job because they've all been outsourced. Wake up.
Getting good grades and graduating with honors also makes you not a slave to student loan debt.. And you obviously don't have kids and if you do what a terrible mom you must be if you don't think your kids want presents on Christmas... And again, you think your little silly movement is going to end poverty? Will everyone be wealthy in the fantasy land you are creating? Is that how someone tricked you into buying into camping in a park for 2 months? That if you do it long enough there will be no more poor people? Doesn't matter how much you narrow the wealth gap there are still going to be poor people and now this Christmas you are trying to take the one happy morning a year away from them.. I hope that makes you feel good about yourself.. but your life is still going to suck..
"During the first two months of the nationwide Occupy protests, the movement that is demanding more out of the wealthiest Americans cost local taxpayers at least $13 million in police overtime and other municipal services, according to a survey by The Associated Press."
Now I guess OW protesters will cost merchants money which will be passed on to the consumer because of the disruption in sales for the stores which employs hard working people who pay the taxes used in the last two months on overtime for police and city services that the OW protesters cost. Now that’s freedom!
Hmmm, what would happen if we didn't spend $$$ on Black Friday? Uhhmm, retailers would have lower profits leading to laying off people (that's the 99% losing their jobs), and possibly a few retailers would go out of business, again causing thousands to lose jobs. WOW, you OWS protestors are so smart...
These guys are worse than Obama.....the more they help us the more money it costs us ($13 million so far) & the worse off we are.
I was kinda on the fence with this whole occupy movement because I never felt there was a clear strategy for getting to the end goal. This, however, is just plain stupid and diminishes their credibility in my opinion. If they spent as much time working on a job search as they do on the streets, maybe some of them would be closer to working.
Pepper spray these hippies into oblivion.
Worthless human garbage. Typical America Hating Liberals.
Your lack of education has rendered you helpless to make good judgement on any level. Until you actually get some education, you should allow those more educated to figure this out. And, don't lie and say you went to college, because you and I both know you barely made it through high school.
Hey look, a Liberal talking down to people.
SO SURPRISED!
Are you being paid to post here? I wonder because what you say is so nonsensical. Please heed my advice and have others make important decisions for you.
