Occupy targets retailers on Black Friday

The Occupy movement is taking on the biggest retail day of the season, calling on protesters to occupy major retailers on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

"OCCUPY BLACK FRIDAY by occupying/boycotting large chain stores and publicly traded retail" is the message posted on the website stopblackfriday.com.

The movement contends that 1% of the country is making money at the expense of the other 99%.

"The credit cards the 99% overcharge will allow the 1% to enrich themselves gluttonously on the backs of hardworking people who simply want to provide a memorable time for their families," the website says.

"So just imagine what would happen to the 1% if the 99% did not spend on Black Friday."

The site asks protesters to target only "publicly traded large businesses" and support small businesses "that serve our local communities."

The site lists Abercrombie & Fitch, Amazon.com, AT&T Wireless, Burlington Coat Factory, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dollar Tree, The Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Office Max, Toys "R" Us, Verizon Wireless and Wal-Mart as businesses that should be boycotted or occupied.

"We are NOT anti-capitalist, just anti-crapitalist," the site says.

These are people with money (how they qualify as a non-profit is a big question) to spend and nothing good to do with it. Negatively impacting the engine of our economy, retail, is about a intelligent as a telephone pole. These retailers do pay taxes, as do the 1% they are railing against. These are nothing but idiots who want to implement the socialist experiment, that has failed everywhere it's been tried, here in the U.S. Getting in the way of the people who are looking for the bargains in a down economy is nothing but disruptive to the lives of citizens of the U.S. It is not an expression of free speech, as that "right" stops when you impede the "rights" of others to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Somehow these people feel their "rights" trump everyone else.

Insanity is doing the same thing day in day out, and expecting things to change. OCCUPY is just trying to draw attention to al lthe suffering the middle class is enduring. If America's hard working middle class is too busy or ignorant to try and make their voices be heard, then we deserve to continue getting a royal screwing! SUPPORT OCCUPY!

These 99%ers should be blaming themselves. They (we) voted in our elected leaders! Rather than going after retailers why dont they put that effort into recalling those in government who are litterally RUNNING THE COUNTRY?? Obama is the head of this nation, why aren't they screaming "Step Down" to him as they did the head of UC Davis when a lone officer pepper sprayed a group of blatant law breakers (disobaying a lawful order)? 99% Jerks! Happy Thanks giving everyone, even you hippies! 😉

I agree with you Obama should be made to step down. ANYONE could do a better job.
I do like the idea of boycotting businesses (all of them) on Black Friday. I think if there is a poor showing Retailers will discount the good stuuf rather than giving away this inferior garbage.

A lawful order only applys to the military. There have been many of a cop say to do something because they are in a position of power, but you really don't have to do it becuase they have no authority to do so. Just because someone tells you to move, you don't necessarly have to do it.

uneducated... if a police officer tell you to move... you have to move... 99.9% of cops don't go looking to bother people like you think they do...

I'm doing a reversed occupy and buy nothing at all this season. Why should we rush to the stores that do not pay their employees living wages and 99% of their stock is "Made Out of America"! This only makes them richer by ballooning their quarterly earnings. I do not understand how Americans can complain about the 1%'s monetary influence over congress yet like drones rush and trample one another to give that hard earned cash to the 1%.

Well, maybe it's because if people stop shopping, the economy crumbles. Then those 1% who own the companies close even more stores, thereby forcing even MORE people out of work and into unemployment. If you're going to spend money at the holidays, do it when the product you want is the cheapest. That's just good economics.

Do you think those people that work in retailing should be making a lot of money? A person makes about as much money as they put into their life. If you're trying to suppport a family on a retailers salary then you're obviously not applying thouself. Get over it. The only people that themselves into these holes are the ones that don't plan ahead.

Me too. The economy needs all the help it can get. Besides, people are working in those stores and making money to pay their bills. If they want to make a better living they need to go back to school and do something different.

seriously, what is their goal? To end any sort of market, credit system, and profit making system? They want to kill banks that lend money for homes? Do they really want us to be a third world country? I'm sorry, but I am getting really tired of them being called the 99% of the population. I think its time the media ignored them. Their message doesn't make sense, and their mission is clearly not going to achieve any type of American dream. Media: PLEASE STOP GIVING THESE PEOPLE ATTENTION. PLEASE.

Yeah, they actually started off on the right path, but along the way they have become so diluted and unfocused, that they are now just a loose group of whiners that really don't know what they want or how to get it.

Their only answer appears to be "Down with.....everything...yeah that works...down with everything".

The messaging here sounds awfully similar to socialist propaganda. This Occupy movement needs to stay focused on targets that people actually would like changed (i.e. financial sector and the federal government). I don't hear a great out-pouring of angst against any of the targeted retailers. If Occupy continues to degrade into a socialist movement, they will find they no longer represent anything near 99% of Americans!

It has some socialism threads to it but if you look at it they have absolutely no direction – just whining. So I would not really categorize it as socialism either.
