Occupy targets retailers on Black Friday

The Occupy movement is taking on the biggest retail day of the season, calling on protesters to occupy major retailers on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

"OCCUPY BLACK FRIDAY by occupying/boycotting large chain stores and publicly traded retail" is the message posted on the website stopblackfriday.com.

The movement contends that 1% of the country is making money at the expense of the other 99%.

"The credit cards the 99% overcharge will allow the 1% to enrich themselves gluttonously on the backs of hardworking people who simply want to provide a memorable time for their families," the website says.

"So just imagine what would happen to the 1% if the 99% did not spend on Black Friday."

The site asks protesters to target only "publicly traded large businesses" and support small businesses "that serve our local communities."

The site lists Abercrombie & Fitch, Amazon.com, AT&T Wireless, Burlington Coat Factory, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dollar Tree, The Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Office Max, Toys "R" Us, Verizon Wireless and Wal-Mart as businesses that should be boycotted or occupied.

"We are NOT anti-capitalist, just anti-crapitalist," the site says.

Ya know, we as Americans had better start paying attention to the things that are not in the story. Look at that sign-50-70% off! And you know dang well they are still making armloads of money. They get the goods from some dirt poor rice farmer in China, pay someone here the lowest wage possible to sell it to us at 100's of percent markup.

So, question is: what are we going to do on the morning of the day when we finally wake up and discover that we really have shopped ourselves out of existence ?

I will never shop on black Friday. I just get visions of corporate execs covered in honey rolling in the mountains of money we spent.

Who is the moron coming up with these ideas? Nothing better to alienate the average American than to disrupt their holidays.

Keep it up OWS. At this rate, OWS will be extinct by Christmas.

Brilliant. Obstruct business during the most critical portion of the retail calendar so that the retailers lose money and have to lay off employees to make up the difference.

"The credit cards the 99% over charge"

I want to reiterate this statement because it adequately sums up this movement.

"the 99%" overcharge. Like thats some how the credit card companies fault. Thats right. The mentality of this movement is to deny personal responsibility and blame the "evil" rich. Its BS. If you overcharge your credit card, thats your own dumb fault. There is this interesting thing called a "budget" where you manage how much you make vs how much you spend. Like the democrats in congress, when liberal hippies overspend their "budget" they owe debt they cant pay. Now in their own mission statement they are trying to place the blame for their own decisions on the wealthy (people who clearly can manage budgets).

I have never been so ashamed of my nation. This is what we have become. A bunch of whining teenagers unable to take personal responsibility. Our nations founders would be rolling in their graves if they could watch the opportunity which we have squandered.

I have news for you, large retailers do service local communities and sell the same type of products as local businesses.

What if, instead of trying to stop Black Friday, they just enouraged people to shop with the money they have and not use credit cards? It sounds like they're just mad about the credit card companies. If stores don't sell anything on Black Friday, it'll just mean more retail job cuts. How is that sticking it to the 1%?

I agree! I have put aside a little bit of cash every month for the past year, preparing for a conservative Christmas for my three small children. I have my cash in hand, and will not be charging a thing this holiday. We use credit cards for emergencies only, and we pay for groceries, household items, EVERYTHING in cash. I don't see how me taking advantage of the sales to make my money stretch further is a bad thing. I've planned, I've set aside my small budget, and when my cash is gone, it's gone. Combining the sales this weekend with my small budget, I can afford the gift that each of my girls wants. It's about self-control, planning, and needs vs. wants.

I have used some credit myself, but it's all been with 6-12 months interest free offers. Most companies figure you won't actually pay it off in time, but I do so it works out great.

""So just imagine what would happen to the 1% if the 99% did not spend on Black Friday."

Apparently the mental midgets at OWS fail to realize that the impact is ZERO, because the 99% will spend the money the following day. Reminds me of the clueless twits that think that not buying gas on a Friday will have some effect.... without realizing that it just means people will buy their gas on Saturday instead and the net result will be ZIPPO!

What local stores? They were all ran out of business in the past ten years. My area in SE Pennsylvania has 1 privately owned store that functions like a GameStop. Its in Reading PA. Privately owned toy stores for kids, book stores, department stores. Aside from restaurants, and hardware stores, and small food markets everything else here is a chain. Where exactly are you supposed to go? I'm not trying to be a downer, I'm asking a legitimate question. If anyone knows of places please use this oppertunity to list them here, or a web source were you can look up privately owned businesses by types.

    Happy Thanksgiving

That sounds like a good idea for a website if there isn't one already. Only lists local privately owned stores in different areas.
