Occupy targets retailers on Black Friday

The Occupy movement is taking on the biggest retail day of the season, calling on protesters to occupy major retailers on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

"OCCUPY BLACK FRIDAY by occupying/boycotting large chain stores and publicly traded retail" is the message posted on the website stopblackfriday.com.

The movement contends that 1% of the country is making money at the expense of the other 99%.

"The credit cards the 99% overcharge will allow the 1% to enrich themselves gluttonously on the backs of hardworking people who simply want to provide a memorable time for their families," the website says.

"So just imagine what would happen to the 1% if the 99% did not spend on Black Friday."

The site asks protesters to target only "publicly traded large businesses" and support small businesses "that serve our local communities."

The site lists Abercrombie & Fitch, Amazon.com, AT&T Wireless, Burlington Coat Factory, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dollar Tree, The Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Office Max, Toys "R" Us, Verizon Wireless and Wal-Mart as businesses that should be boycotted or occupied.

"We are NOT anti-capitalist, just anti-crapitalist," the site says.

OWS may fracture like the Tea Party has. They do need to stay on message.

Listen up Sheep! There is no 99%. I am not part of your ill-defined 1%, nor am I part of your media feuled disallusionment. Stop regurgitating what you hear in the media. It's the 1%'s fault. It's GE's fault. It's Grover Norquist's fault. How many of you heard of Grover Norquist before the last few days.

You want to bring about change? Go vote. Get involved in your local politics. otherwise, go home.

Everyone has heard of him before the past few days. He screwed everything up with his pledge back during all the possible government shutdowns this summer and spring. Where have you been?

BRAVO and WELL SAID! By branching out into Occupy Black Friday, Occupy Red Light Cameras, Occupy Anything but a JOB....the whole movement is losing any of the tiny bit of credibility it may have had. Now, most are seen merely as FANATICS instead of revolutionaries.

This is the stupidest thing ever! Why would the Occupy movement be against retailers providing LOWER PRICES to consumers?! It's time for the Occupy movement to accept the fact that it's not a crime to be wealthy, that big businesses are the driving force of the economy, and that fighting big businesses will only lead to higher unemployment and higher prices. The economy cannot be supported by small businesses – big businesses are essential to economic recovery!

A better message would be to have targeted Wall Mart. They should be at the center of any campaign to draw attention to outsourcing of American jobs to Asian countries at the expense of American labor. However, the American public wants cheaply made Chinese goods made by children and the underpaid workers. The only way to stop the abuse of all workers world wide is to make those products as expensive as domestically produced products by charging import fees and tariffs.

This could get interesting. Retail stores are private property and OWS protesters do not have the right to block access to them. This isn't the same as sitting on a public sidewalk.

"The credit cards the 99% overcharge will allow the 1% to enrich themselves gluttonously on the backs of hardworking people who simply want to provide a memorable time for their families," the website says.

Really? That is what I can stand about this "movement". It appears that everyone is at fault except individuals making bad decisions. Providing a memorable time for their families does not have to include overcharging credit cards. This is a symptom of how our WHOLE society is sick with greed and materialism. You simply can't blame just the corporations for these problems. The people that do this are not sheep, they're not infected by some brain disease, they are willingly using their plastic when they know the results could be a disaster.

The Black Friday protesting is a joke too. Please go and tell the cop who has to work overtime on Christmas, the office worker who misses his child's activites because he/she has to work late, the small business owner who is trying to make ends meet, or a number of other workers that put hard work and effort into making their communities and businesses successful and safe.

Occupy movement needs to change strategy. Disruptions will only hurt the cause. I have lost support for it now. The only thing RICH people fear is losing money. By not invest in it (boycott their product and service), their stock value goes down, that's money they're not getting. Netflix is a perfect example.

Did they ever think how that effects the 99% of people who will be shopping that day, or the workers of those stores and their families? These people are idiots. I am willing to bet that we will be hearing about shoppers beating up the protestors come Friday night.

yeah occupy these stores, drive their sales and revenue down, and then hurt their employees, some of which make almost minimum wage.

Great idea...NOT. Boycotting companies in hopes of making them suffer, will only cause them to lay-off employees, usually the lower ones on the totem pole. Now you're just adding to the problem. What have they done to deserve that? Nothing.

Do you Occupy People really think things through?

    idiots

Wal-Mart also provides thousands of jobs to unskilled, uneducated workers. It is a double-edged sword.

No, Walmart requires its employees to be polite and to bath at least occasionally.

    Kick debt in the malls.

Currently, there is social customs that cause people to go nuts buying on credit cards, and going into excess in the name of "love". This does need to be evaluated. I personally see no problem with shopping, just the excess. One case against this holiday season doing it now, is the insanity of long lines, and other madness.

maybe "occupy" should focus efforts on the enablers of the system they despise? Example being the person who has a pocket full of maxed out credit cards that he or she is paying 19-30 percent interest on. If there was more fiscal responsibility in the general public, these credit card companies that occupy believes are the root of all evil would not make the profits that they do.

Instead of swatting flies why not get rid of the manure pile?
