Afghan president calls for meeting on rape victim's case

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called a high-level judiciary meeting to discuss the case of a rape victim who was jailed because of the attack and has agreed to marry the rapist to get out of prison and legitimize her daughter, the president's spokesman said Monday.

The meeting, scheduled for Thursday in Kabul, was called in reaction to a petition with nearly 5,000 signatures and media inquiries about the case, said Karzai spokesman Aimal Faizi.

The woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison after she approached authorities to report that her cousin's husband had raped her two years ago.

    Wait a minute...this poor woman had a child by her rapist, too?
    Is there no end to the indignities this woman has suffered?
    All this, *and* she was jailed for adultery because *he* was married?
    Backwards ass country!

    Hopefully, the President will do the right thing and free her; *then* throw that nasty rapist in prison for raype!
    Let him bear the punishment for a crime she was totally blameless for!

    Karzai is just political enough to let her out, but no way the rapist will be charged. He doesn't want to risk the backlash from the more radical fringe. (If you can call them the fringe, they seem like the majority sometimes.) But I don't understand what the outrage would hypothetically be from them. "This man is being charged for follwing the teachings of the prophet and taking this woman, his wife cousin, by force." I don't get it.

      Her rapist is in prison, but received a sentence less than his victim, people from that whole area are still living in the dark ages

    Not only is she sitting in jail for adultery because her cousins husband ra ped her, but she has been threatend by family members of the man who ra ped her. This poor woman is in a no win situation just because the men in the islamic nations think women are no more than a piece meat. Sick ass people.

    And unfortunately for her the worst is yet to come! They also have a law that it makes it legal for her cousins family to stone her to death. Maybe these countries dont need our military backing as much as they do an education backing eh?
