Overheard on CNN.com: Is four years fair for Michael Jackson's death?

Editor's note: This post is part of the Overheard on CNN.com series, a regular feature that examines interesting comments and thought-provoking conversations posted by the community.

A California judge sentenced Dr. Conrad Murray to four years in jail - the maximum possible sentence - for the overdose death of Michael Jackson.

Murray sentenced to four years behind bars

The sentence, and the judge's harsh words for Murray, had CNN.com commenters debating whether Murray got off easy with the involuntary manslaughter conviction, or if he was railroaded because his patient was an international superstar.

"This is just a tragedy all the way around," starryskye said.

"Clearly he did not intend for Michael to die. Clearly, he is still fully responsible for his death. I see a depressed, broken individual, and nothing will bring back Michael. Putting him in prison will not serve any purpose nor protect anyone as he cannot practice medicine again. Sentencing him to therapy and to community service would be more productive and in a sense be more honoring to Michael."

radiogirl886: Let's not forget that Michael Jackson is dead because Michael Jackson was a drug addict. His addiction killed him, and that's on Michael Jackson. Yes, this doctor should be punished because he violated the law by prescriping drugs in a negligent manner, but people act as if justice has been served in a cruel, tragic murder.

The simple fact is that if it was not Dr. Murry, it would have been Dr. Someone Else and Michael Jackson would be just as dead because Michael Jackson was a drug addict. If Michael Jackson couldn't have found a Dr. for prescription drugs to abuse, he would have gotten illegal drugs off the street."

Others, like ChefCHEESE, blamed Murray for Jackson's death.

"4 year for killing a man is very little time. He got of easy. After 4 years he will still have a life while MJ will not neither will his Kid's see their dad ever again."

CuddlyCarla: "I love the people who keep painting Dr. Murray as some innocent victim, clearly they haven't been following the trial. Never mind his lying to doctors and police, secretly taping his patient and breaking the confidentiality clause, ordering hundreds of deadly vials of Propofol, trying to conceal evidence, neglecting patient, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

What do you think of the sentence? Share your thoughts in the comments, or post a video comment through CNN iReport.

This doctor did not kill Michael Jackson at all.
Michael Jackson was a drug addict who died instead of recovering.
Addiction goes one way or the other.
Jackson died of his addiction. It was his own responsibility to try to recover.

Do not understand at all how this man can be found guilty. I think this verdict is a travesty of justice. When I think of how many people of notariatry have gotten off scott free, it is very obvious that justice is indeed blind....He shouldn't have to go at all...believe he was a vicitim.

Murray is a calculating, calloused, deceitful coward not to mention a disgrace to the medical profession. He plied his trade in the secrecy of darkness (literally and figuratively) pushing needles into into someone who clearly, desperately needed help all to satisfy his unfathomable greed and narcissism. I don't care if Michael Jackson was addicted to every drug on earth, Murrays's lies and recklessness cost a man his life. More than 4 years, I'd like to see someone load him up with surgical anesthetic every nite for 2 1/2 months and walk away leaving him alone and helpless. He hung himself. He won't get an ounce of sympathy from me.

Michael Jackson was responsible for his great success.
He was also responsible for his successful death.
IMO, he has been trying to die for years.
    He got his wish.

Michael was a drug addict who is responsible for his own death. His punishment? Death of course – Peace out MJ, thanks for the cool tunes. The Doc? He needs to punished to deter other Docs from doing the same stupid stuff. If patient asks for narcotics, should a doctor prescribe just because the patient is rich? What about if the patient sells them and doesnt even use them? The Doc is not putting HIS patient in danger? Either way, you want to be a Doc? Do the right thing and heal people or go be a criminal. Just my 2 bits

Michael Jackson was an accident waiting to happen. No one deserves to die, but Michael Jackson's lifestyle certainly contributed to his demise. Murray is no saint, but the doctor was probably stuck between a rock and a hard place. Murray was pressured by Jackson to provide the "milk" as Jackson called it. Murray probably knew giving "milk" was probably not the best idea, but if Murray wanted to keep his job with Jackson, he had to provide the "milk". Jackson was under pressure by AEG, or whatever the company was called, to perform.

And, chances are, your grandparents or great-grandparents were not born on US soil either.
    That is absolutely irrelevant.

Michael Jackson was on a mission to die for quite some time he just didnt have the courage to do it by himself. The shame of the whole thing is the children left behind. And bad enough this man lost his license but now the family wants millions? Dang

The doctor got railed because of Michael's fame. He probably wouldn't have gotten any jail time if they were unknowns. I think he was so reckless he deserves some jail time, and 4 would be about the max. But I still fault Michael some for his drug abuse.

Dr. Murray did not intend to hurt Michael Jackson. He was his friend. He gave Michael the drug like a father pays for his boxer son to train for a deadly opponent in which the son could be killed.. Jackson was determined to make a comeback. But he could not sleep. Murray tried to help him achieve his dream, knowing he took a risk in performing experimental medicine. It was a risk they took together. Murray knew if he did not do this Jackson would have found someone else. They had done this dozens of times. He thought after doing it so many times safely he could do it again. Was the delusion Dr. Murray's ? Or was it the infectious delusion created by being close to Michael's charisma ? Was Dr. Murray in control or was it Michael ? This was more tragedy than crime.
