[Updated at 1:07 p.m. ET] Investigators have arrested six hospital managers after a fire that killed at least 88 people in a hospital Friday in eastern India.
The six worked at a five-story hospital in the city of Kolkata, said Javed Ahmed Khan, the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services minister.
They were arrested for negligence, Khan said.
A "majority" of the bed-ridden patients were abandoned by most of the staff on duty, he said.
Video of the scene broadcast by CNN affiliate CNN-IBN showed crowds of people wearing face masks and rushing patients out onto the street in stretchers.

I think this is just horrendous; my heart goes out to the families of those who perished.
I saw this on the news this morning; the report said that there had been safety violations in the past.
Sad, just utterly sad.
@JIF:
I am somewhat sure that the mods who deal with the abuse read the comments before deleting them; otherwise there would be a lot of posts that would be removed vindictivly.
Indeed we do.
@ joey, seems a little bit disheartening being victimized that way and then read ur the one bein moderated. Even yahoo, as archaic as they are have a system in place to prevent this from happening!
well i for one thank you nicole saidi, i would hate for one of my daughters to read that garbage about their brother. But why are my comments still awaiting moderation? Makes me feel victimized all over again!
@ nicole saidi, thank you for your diligence on this. I dont envy you your job, it is almost the equivelent to kindergarten teacher eh?
