Two "Tebowing" high school students have been suspended for blocking the hallway while mimicking the quarterback's famous prayer pose.
The boys were two of four students to trigger a wave of some 40 students kneeling in between classes, Riverhead High School Principal David Wicks said. The students caused a safety hazard, he said. The incident was captured on a smartphone and posted to YouTube.
"It was basically just a tribute to Tim Tebow," The New York Post quoted one of the boys as saying. "It was more than a religious thing. There was some of that involved obviously, because he prays. I guess it was basically like a moment of silence."
The two students received in-school suspension because they had been warned before about pulling disruptive stunts in the middle of the hallway, Wick said. The others received a verbal warning.
"This is about students causing an unsafe situation by blocking the hallways," Wicks said. "This has nothing to do with Tim Tebow or punishing the students for their religion beliefs. If they'd been sitting in the hallway with their legs crossed they'd receive the same discipline."
Tebow mania is sweeping the nation, inspired by the Denver Broncos quarterback's overt religiosity and knack for winning despite less than stellar stats.
"I think it’s wonderful that our students look up to sports heroes such as Mr. Tebow, but we can’t allow students to create unsafe situations in school," Superintendent Nancy Carney said in a statement.
"The students stated that there was nothing religious about their actions and that they were just having fun. We hope that these students and all of our students continue to look up to the positive role models in public life; we just encourage them to do it in a responsible way."
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, give him a pole and teach him to fish, he eats for a life time. Hats off to you Tebow. People will mock and joke about it, at least you got people talking about it and when people talk (some not all) will start looking deep within their selves...................................At least you don't have to worry about missing class for a day.........
What a stupid thing to say.
Or he'll start losing games and no one will care.
Patience little grasshopper, let you hook hit the water first........
Ya, we are mocking you now too Courtney cause you are a moron too
Careful tiny butterfly, don't fly to close to the water!!
Give a man fire and he'll be warm for the night. Light a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
I see BUZZARDS need to eat too.......................
I am more concerned about the author decideing this was news or CNN publishing the story or even the ignorant commnets supporting this childish game,
Who would want to initate another dumb jock move?
The point is, they were blocking the hallway in between classes AFTER being told not to do this. Not only is this considered willful disobedience (doing something deliberately after being told not to), but also this is a safety hazard. It doesn't matter what they were doing while they were blocking the hallway. Just because they were praying doesn't make it okay to do. They could have "Tebow"ed while lined up along the walls of the hallway. They wouldn't have been blocking the passage of students through the hall, and they probably would not have gotten in trouble.
you REALLY need to switch to decaf!
*oops
Only those reprimanded previously were suspended.
Funny how the same people decrying the poor souls suspension for imitating tebow are the same ones that praised the cops for pepper spraying OWS protesters. I also find it odd that they use the same arguments that the defenders of the pepper sprayed ows defenders used. I guess as long as you imitate a religious zealot its okay to endanger the safety of others.
Tim Tebow – The anti-christ cult who brainwash his kids and claims Broncos will win super bowl 2012. Yeah, there's only one thing he doesn't know. There's atheist football players out there saying Religion is fake.
Tebow has kids? Now, that's impressive for a big virg!
He'll go the way of Matt Leinart next year...
Just another fine example of how religion destroys young minds. Maybe they should spend sometime in Science class and learn the REAL universe instead of getting their so called 'facts' from an ignorant quarterback.
This had nothing to do with prayer or religion. It was just a high school kids stunt which they got a slap on the wrist for. Lets not blow this out of proportion.
The one tool bag could not be bothered to take out his earbuds for this "look at me" display, nice.
If they were mu"`slim they wouldn't have been suspended at all... The school would've been afraid of being called "anti" as well as a target for a body b~~~omb...
I wonder if it occurred to the principal that the students could have got up and moved in the event of a safety hazard.
Rock
I can hardly wait until the Broncos lose some games and this guy's ridiculous aura fades! To all you religious goofballs out there:If you believe that Tim Tebow's prayers affect the outcome of the games, then it would appear that the "God" you believe in cares about who wins or loses a stupid football game but not about all the people in this country and around the world who are jobless, hungry, ill, or abused. That is not a supernatural creature that I am the least bit interested in believing in or adoring.
If it brings prayer back to school, keep doing what you're doing young people! I'd rather have young people following this athetes example than some others they've followed...
as I reply to my own post...definitely shouldn't block the hallway...but pray on!
If students can't pray at a commencement program, they shouldn't be allowed to take a 'prayer pose' in school either. It's either prayer or no prayer in school – can't be selective here. Change the law.
They should've been suspended. Number 1, you don't mix church and state in a public school. Number 2, Tebow is noone to emulate. If Tebow's little mind actualy thinks for a second that God cares about the outcome of an NFL game, then he's even more stupid than his actions.
So what exactly has Tebow done to tick you off. He's done nothing but keep his mouth shut, his nose clean, and played to the best of his ability. Maybe kids are emulating him because they are tired of all the athletes in the news for DUI's, drugs, etc
