A large metal ball that fell from space into the Namibian grasslands last month is not alien, officials say, but that's about all they know for certain about the object.
According to a report on The Namibian website, the 13-pound metal sphere with two bumps on its poles was found by a farmer near Onamatunga in the Omunsati region between November 15 and November 20. Explosions were heard in the area before the discovery, but no evidence of an explosion was seen around the area where the object was found.
Paul Ludik, director of the country's National Forensic Science Institute, told The Namibian the sphere, with a circumference of 3.6 feet, is made of a "sophisticated" metal alloy that is known to man, but he said it has no markings that would identify it. No international space agency has claimed ownership, he said.
“A number of tests have been performed on the object, and it appears to be hollow. We are still busy with a detailed examination of the object,” The Namibian quotes him as saying.
Ludik told The Namibian that the object poses no cause for alarm, and that such reports of metallic spheres falling from space are common in the Southern Hemisphere.
So should we expect a run on helmets at sporting goods stores south of the equator?
I call engine oxygen tank, or other gaseous tank, on this one. Its small, so it could have even been from a private company shot. Not so mysterious.
Agreed. Looks like a tank where some kind of liquid was stored. Helium or otherwise. Nothing mysterious.
Nope, it's completely solid, a tank would require a valve, it's a gyro ballast from a most likely dysfunctional satelite.
That's my kickball!!
Open it up, when you have no idea what's in it... Brilliant.
From Africa, the same continent where people think raping a virgin will cure AIDs.
Why the comment about Africa? Every country has people that think outside the norm. America has plenty of that.
Thats great to know that large metal objects just randomly fall from the sky and could kill anyone at any minute due to our advanced technological procedures...that do NOT prevent this from happening.
Tens of thousands of people die each year in auto accidents in the US and you are worried about a metal ball from space falling on your head and killing you? Get a grip on reality Eric.
Can we blame Obama for this too? So far, everything has been his fault so why not this?
For every troller who blames Obama, there's a troller like you who preemptively declares his innocence to any and all things. Food for thought.
Of course it's Obummer's fault. When will the Libertards figure out that these failed policies will cause metal balls to fall from the sky? The only solution is to cut taxes to zero for the Job Creators! Wake up you morans!
@Jonny DC- just because you suffix something with "Food for thought" doesn't make it profound or true.
I have a pet rhino living in my bathroom. Food for thought.
Bruklin: Dude, that was profound, you have answered all my questions. Thank you oh rhino god!!
Nah! this is to simple, Obama is even more mysterious than the metal ball!
I think we need The Doctor
The object is a ballast point from a defunct satellite not of U.S. origin. The "explosions" were merely sonic booms as the object broke the sound barrier. Most of this type of debris is more fragile and will disintegrate as it breeches the atmosphere but an orb like the one in the picture is more sturdy and aerodynamic. While in the military, our team was on patrol and observed an orbital re-entry object make its way across the sky and it actually provided light that illuminated the ground below its flight path. Everyone watching stood entirely silent and watched in amazement as it passed in a trajectory in front and above us. It lasted about 7 or 8 seconds before impact just beyond our line of sight and had several times breeched the sound barrier. You could have heard a pin drop and we all looked at each other simultaneously and burst out laughing without saying a word. It struck us all so funny because in the middle of a combat zone, we were used to seeing all sorts of effects related to military ordnance in the nighttime sky and in the midst of all that comes this entirely inert and harmless object just blistering through the atmosphere and caused everything within hundreds of miles around us to suddenly stop and go silent as everyone watched it pass by. Here soldiers are waging war to kill each other and an unfamiliar light in the sky makes everyone pause to bear witness to it. The only thing we could do is bust out laughing. To this day, some 37 years later, it still becomes a topic of conversation between those of us still left to remember it.
Your story was great! Thank you for sharing it with us. I, too, served in the military. Unfortunately, I went no further than Ft. Drum New York so the only thing I ever saw falling from the sky was quarter size snowflakes.
Mr.John That is so cool like that story Godbless wish you and your loved ones best holidays.
interesting story, john. thanks for sharing!
That is a cool story, the way you told it I could actually see it!
Great story. Thank god you are still around to talk about it and thank you for your service.
Spaceballs? Oh darn, there goes the planet!
BRILLIANT!!
Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball.
jeeeze... first a coke bottle and now this.
Baahahahahaha!!!! good one!
Dear BOA (Blame Obama Assossiation),
Why haven't you blamed Obama for this yet???? It needs to get done!
From,
SBO (stop blaming Obama
OK. George Bush was Obama's fault. And Vice Versa.
I'm still waiting for a magazine to come out with a pic of Bush and Obama in bed together.........yeah.....I just got sick.....bye.
You seem worried and justifiably so.
Are we attacking Namibia now?
Ludik told The Namibian that the object poses no cause for alarm, and that such "reports of metallic spheres falling from space" are common in the Southern Hemisphere. What????
Thanks you S.Surrell – I had the *exact* same reaction. Funny how no one else seems to have picked up on this...
It's how the world powers distrbute their variouse viruses....rolls eyes...
It's ok folks, no cause for alarm, my left nut finally dropped :p
It will soon be the latest fasion for nose rings
Clearly, the Martians are fed up with all the probes we are sending to them and are challenging us to a game of baseball. That was the first pitch. Do we have anyone who can hit it back into orbit? Preferably at least as far as Jupiter.
