I am glad I always refused when my girlfriend wanted to get me into one of these balloons.

You're sooo much safer in a balloon or any aircraft than you are in a car, bus or truck. The numbers would really impress you. More people die in an average year from DUI than died in all years of the VietNam war.

Oh come on..... thousands of balloons fly every day and rarely are people killed! You're still much more likely to be killed in a car wreck.

Its like hearing of a fatal car crash in the news and saying "I'm not getting into a car again".
Your girlfriend sounds like a more curious and adventurous person than you and will be bored with you soon or later...

Eric, you are more likely to die in a car cause you spend half your day in a car with millions of other idiots in cars. If the skies looked like the highways people would die in plane crashes every day. And I have to believe you have a much better chance of surviving a car crash over a plane crash.

58,272 U.S. KIA in the Vietnam War. That is more than total auto related deaths in the U.S. in any given year (high: 1972 with 54,589), and the DUI deaths are just a fraction of that (about 1/3). U.S. auto deaths have been in the 30,000s the last few years. From the CDC: "In 2009, 10839 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (32%) of all traffic-related deaths ..."

I never cared for balloons. As a skydiver, I wold never enter those contraptions without a rig on my back. Seriously.

I totally see your reasoning, as I'm also a skydiver. However I did have a dream to jump out of one of those hot air balloons for over 5 years now. I know I'll be anxious to get to 1000 feet.

The balloons seem barely controllable to me with fuel on board, which sounds like double the hazard.

I NEVER trust the simple idea of hot air rises on a basket run by hot air ONE MILE STRAIGHT up in the air. folks, are you really this bored? I'm sure NOT!

Andreas Moser, your comment is completely inappropriate. Such words are not needed to add to a tragedy like this. My thoughts go out to the families involved.

Nicole, find a quarter in your purse and go buy yourself a sense of humor. Relatives of those involved in the accident are not going to come looking here for condolence notices. It was an accident. It's a shame, but people can say what they want. That said, I just reported "Aryan."

I propose while Congress is in session, we lock the doors and fit the building with the biggest hot are balloon ever made. It will be just like "Up", but the sheer mass of hot air generated will carry them peacefully into orbit.
