Believe it: Tebow works another miracle in Denver

The astounding story of Tim Tebow added another chapter Sunday as the controversial quarterback led his Denver Broncos to a stunning 29-23 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in an NFL wildcard playoff game.

On the first play from scrimmage in overtime, Tebow heaved a pass 18 yards to receiver Demaryius Thomas, who stiff-armed Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor and sprinted down the right sideline for an 80-yard touchdown.

The Broncos led 20-6 at halftime, but the Steelers - led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's 289 yards passing - clawed their way back to tie the game at 23 with time running down in regulation. Neither team could get close enough for a winning field goal, and the contest moved into overtime.

The league instituted complicated new overtime rules for the playoffs, but the rule differences never came into play as Tebow and Thomas wrapped it up in 11 seconds - the shortest overtime in NFL history. The referee's explanation of the rules before the coin toss actually took up more time than the extra period.

Tebow has been criticized since his college days at the University of Florida for his awkward throwing motion and his overt Christian faith - including his practice of bowing in prayer after touchdowns. But Denver fans, and eventually the Broncos front office, embraced him this season as he led a series of late-game comebacks.

On Sunday he threw for 316 yards (which some people noted might be punctuated 3:16, for the cornerstone verse from the Gospel of John); 204 of those yards were throws to Thomas.

At the postgame news conference, Tebow acknowledged that football success is great but tried to put it in perspective.

"Football is amazing. We love it. We're so passionate about it as you could see right there (on the final play)," he said, according to video on NFL.com. "But the real win, at least I would say today, is being able to comfort a girl who's been through 73 surgeries before the game, and get a chance to go hang out with her now. That's the biggest win of the day. So they're both exciting, but that's what I'm even more proud of."

Tebow Time now moves on to New England, where the Broncos will face Tom Brady and the top-seeded Patriots on Saturday.

I'm not understanding how an athlete that says "I'd like to thank my Lord Jesus Christ" before an interview and bows after every win or touchdown (as hundreds of athletes have done before him) can be called "contreversial' or "in your face".

Maybe it's not so much an "in your face" thing as it is "Wow, look at that guy! He's thanking some mythological being for his success. What an idiot"

It is all foretold in the book. Thomas running 204 yards: John 20.4 tells about the disciple running faster than Peter. Hallelujah

If he wasn't big and strong and young and healthy and able to run, he wouldn't even be a starting quarterback or possibly even playing pro-football. He has one of the worst passing arms, I've ever seen in football in years. I could care less about his praying on the field, it's amusing at best. But the right wing pundits have made an awful big deal about it branding all progressives as anti-Tebow and atheists!

"...as the controversial quarterback... ...Tebow has been criticized since his college days at the University of Florida for his awkward throwing motion and his overt Christian faith..."

Controversial because of his overt Christian faith? You call yourself a journalist? is there no end to the baseless CNN smears against Christianity?

I don't think Tebow is pushing anything on anyone. He does what he does for his own reasons. The 'controversy' is all about how other people react to it (on both sides).

"does he really need to shove down everyone's throat "

Looks like another moron who doesn't know that if he doesn't like something, he doesn't need to watch it. That's why they allow you to change the channel on the TV dimwit!

Is the god that is helping him win the same god that is choosing who our republican runner will be? He seems to be a pretty busy guy, I guess too busy to help with all the innocent killings happening around the world.

He already went as far as He could to do something about "all the innocent killings around the world." He left heaven, came to earth, preached the most sterling moral teaching the world has ever heard, performed countless miracles and healings to demonstrate His power over sin and death, offered Himself on a cross as a sacrifice to atone for "all the...killings," rose bodily from the dead, and called all men to repent of their sin and believe in Him. But the world would not have Him. The world is in the condition it's in because of its rejection of the God who cared enough to submit Himself to our brutal ways. Thanks Tim Tebow for making the reality of Jesus Christ an issue for the world that so vehemently rejects Him.

Well said brother Frank! Hypocrites, how about you and te balance of the human race doing something to stop the killings around the world? Men can do all things if they would only have faith. Tim Tebow is not afraid to be a man of God. I'm a Patriots fan but will not mind one bit if Tebow and his Broncos trample us.

@Frank C and SPA Knight: as I read your statements I'm reminded that above all else, christianity embraces and holds dear primarily these three things: fear, sanctimony and really, really, really fuzzy thinking.

@phorse: To critize me as being fearful, sanctimonious and having fuzzy think is one thing but all of christianity is on trial? That sounds "fuzzy" to me and not very open-minded. What is there to fear anyway except finding out that there really is a creator. Peace.

I'm a person of faith, but really? Do you really believe that God stands up before His celestial scoreboard and says, "Why that Tim is a good and pious boy. I'll let him crush the Pittsburgh Steelers in a demoralizing overtime loss." So does that mean God prefers Denver to Pittsburgh? And, given the entire litany of the world's problems, do you really think that 22 pituitary gland cases moving an inflated sac of leather up and down a football field matters a hill of beans?

the conceit and stupidity of believing that "god" cares about the outcome of a stupid football game is, well, beyond belief.

Bill Maher is still a short, bitter anti-religious man while Tebow gets the chance to praise God and win a football game. Doesn't get any better than that! Hahaha Bill Maher!!

I agree with you. Tebow has his life's priorities straight and it's driving those without any sense or perspective completely crazy. He's a great role model for young people and anyone watchig football instead of going to church on Sunday.
