Believe it: Tebow works another miracle in Denver

The astounding story of Tim Tebow added another chapter Sunday as the controversial quarterback led his Denver Broncos to a stunning 29-23 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in an NFL wildcard playoff game.

On the first play from scrimmage in overtime, Tebow heaved a pass 18 yards to receiver Demaryius Thomas, who stiff-armed Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor and sprinted down the right sideline for an 80-yard touchdown.

The Broncos led 20-6 at halftime, but the Steelers - led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's 289 yards passing - clawed their way back to tie the game at 23 with time running down in regulation. Neither team could get close enough for a winning field goal, and the contest moved into overtime.

The league instituted complicated new overtime rules for the playoffs, but the rule differences never came into play as Tebow and Thomas wrapped it up in 11 seconds - the shortest overtime in NFL history. The referee's explanation of the rules before the coin toss actually took up more time than the extra period.

Tebow has been criticized since his college days at the University of Florida for his awkward throwing motion and his overt Christian faith - including his practice of bowing in prayer after touchdowns. But Denver fans, and eventually the Broncos front office, embraced him this season as he led a series of late-game comebacks.

On Sunday he threw for 316 yards (which some people noted might be punctuated 3:16, for the cornerstone verse from the Gospel of John); 204 of those yards were throws to Thomas.

At the postgame news conference, Tebow acknowledged that football success is great but tried to put it in perspective.

"Football is amazing. We love it. We're so passionate about it as you could see right there (on the final play)," he said, according to video on NFL.com. "But the real win, at least I would say today, is being able to comfort a girl who's been through 73 surgeries before the game, and get a chance to go hang out with her now. That's the biggest win of the day. So they're both exciting, but that's what I'm even more proud of."

Tebow Time now moves on to New England, where the Broncos will face Tom Brady and the top-seeded Patriots on Saturday.

I am a Christian but I don't often push my faith on others. I have been a Tim Tebow fan, not because he's a Christian, although I think it makes him a nice wholesome young man, I am a fan of his football abilities. I saw him play in 2006 FL v GA. Even as a freshman they were putting him in to run those up the middle TDs, and I have been following & rooting for him ever since. Now, why is HE being criticized for kneely after TDs, players have been doing that since football began. GIVE IT A BREAK! Does God help games go this way or that, I doubt it, but I'm sure Tim's heart is full & he gets inspiration from his faith. GIVE THAT A BREAK TOO! Good for him and his HUGE win over the Stealers. Congratulations Tim Tebow. From an ALL WEATHER FAN (SINCE 2006).

      Dee,
I think Tebow is being criticized for bringing religion into a place it doesn't below: sports. Sports is a meeting ground of people: something that folks from different faiths can share. Tebow is using his celebrity to take this away from those who don't belong to his faith. I think that is a very short sighted and selfish thing to do.
Nobody has a problem with his faith. But it is a bit ridiculous that he needs to display it and put it in everybody's face.

Yes, he's a good footballer, I just think a fraternal ass-pat is far more appropriate.

Tebow gets criticized for being so arrogant as to assume that God is intervening and taking personal interest in his playing a stupid game. Every time Tebow loses, I want to scream at him "Where's your God, now?" You think once Tebow gets a career-ending injury, he'll be so quick to attribute every little detail of his life to God? If you think God takes sides in an activity as trivial as football, why should anyone want to follow such a petty being?

Jim if you did Google that you would see it is a lie. not surprising, when you base your whole life on a lie you have to make things up to justify it. "he never recanted any of his scientific views, either then or earlier. We think the story of his conversion was fabricated in the U.S.A." – Elizabeth Hope his daughter

Also I find it odd God did not see fit to teach his followers how to spell. I'm not asking for perfect grammar on the internet, but you didn't even spell Christian right. That's okay, I can understand how God is a crutch for the weak-minded who can't think for themselves.

Actually, Jim, that was another lie fed to you by the church. Religious leaders have always manipulated to and stolen from the masses and have gone through any and every effort, such as creating new testaments and revising the Bible, to validate their teachings and make them relevant in the face of new discoveries. Did you know if took the Catholic church all the way until 1992 to finally admit that the Earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around, as they had taught the masses for so long? The church has a long history of abuse and deception, such as lying about Darwin's "conversion." Wake up and stop eating propaganda from the pedophile priests who feed off your willful ignorance.

I really think Denver's three game losing streak was just a "rope-a-dope" strategy used by Tebow against the unassuming Steelers.

Just some unpleasant Facts on American Football and racism:

    1) The sport is very physically demanding, a position where your performance is open to subjective judgement is the quarterback, as your results depends on the receivers and defenders.

    2) The majority of the quarterbacks are whites.

    3) The majority of the audience are whites.

    4) Stringent rules have been put in place to protect the quarterback.

    5) The game is centered around the quarterback as the white male protagonists. Right wing TV stations/programs even exaggerate this and even fully ignore black stars in the team.

What this demonstrates (same as religion), is the power of human people to self-deceive, so as to make themselves more relevant. It just takes a handful of sports writers to create this hype...

He is NOT a Denver fan. He was seen in a sports bar in NY watching the New York Giants. I have it on good authority that god does not like the air quality in Denver. He likes Elway and Tebow though, but also likes Brady, Rogers, Brees, Manning, and Joe Montana. Now, there you have it.
He's also a hobby golfer, god is. Who knows what players he follows on the PGA?

Yeah, sure it was god. Please spare me the stupidity, but the play was football and in fact Tebow was awful. The play was made by the receiver and of course the great media decides it was Tebow because it sells dollars and attention. As usual, the American general public buy this BS and agree. Bad coverage by the Steelers and a great forearm led to the TD, not the fake god and the QB.

I agree, nobody is giving the receiver full credit for a gutsy determined run. He ran out his heart. Without him Tebow would be considered the average developing quarterback that he is. I wish him no ill, but the credit goes to his receivers who sucked at the start and got better in the end.
