1 Shiite pilgrim killed, 10 wounded

At least one Shiite pilgrim was killed and 10 others wounded in a bombing south of Baghdad on Monday, officials said.

An Interior Ministry official said a roadside bomb struck pilgrims in Mahmoudiya south of the capital on Monday morning as the pilgrims were on foot heading to the southern city of Karbala.

Hundreds of thousands of Shiites are making their way to Karbala to commemorate the Arbaeen pilgrimage this weekend.

Arbaeen is the pilgrimage marking the end of a 40 day mourning period for the death of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, a seventh century imam and one of Shiaa Islam's holiest figures.

Since 2003, attacks blamed on Sunni extremists have often targeted the pilgrims - many of whom make a lengthy journey on foot to the Shiite holy city of Karbala.

Over recent days near daily attacks on pilgrims have left scores dead and wounded.

    Nothing like this is news.
People like this, over there, kill each other all the time.
That is the way they are. That is what they do.
It is always to be expected.

Yes Sir, we are almost out of Iraq leaving that once prosperous country with thousands of years of civilization behind them in, destroyed and in a perpetual cycle of violence.
Those Americans who had business ties to this country in the pre war era & there are many who traveled & lived there would, if they are honest , admit that it was a great place.
And no @ JI-F, it has not been like that. Rich in culture, warm hospitable people, modern infrastructure, museums, historic sites, education, rich heritage. Outstanding women found in every sector of society. That was Iraq. The picture you paint is the stereotype we are fond of projecting of these countries.

Congratulations Americans. A great day to rejoice.

Our national Debt at 15.2 trillion plus now equals our GDP. What a milestone.
Now let's go to war with Iran. After achieving this 'goal' we can afford a third war. Let's elect Romney or Santorum or whatever & be done with it.
    God Bless America.

It's always pilgrims.. Doesn't even seem worth it to be a pilgrim anymore.. At least the indians had to look them in the eye.

I don't worry too much where this country is headed. I really don't.

    I *know* where it's headed.

    Where it's been.

There will be tough times. There will be great times.

Granted, this has been a *L*O*N*G* tough one.. But, like always, America will prevail. And most likely, by and large we will prevail peacefully. We are, after all, Americans. We prevail in spite of ourselves. 'Cuz everyone has a say.

We'll get a handful of psychos, shooting congresswomen and what not. That's it.

It's just so easy and desirous to play the victim, people try to do it.. Americans.. Living here.. Are somehow victims.. Lots of places have it much worse.

Just like anywhere, there's nutbags. Just like here, some of them are religious. Ya gotta find the nutbags before they can hurt anybody. This shouldn't be a religious thing at all. It's a lack of security. Is nobody in charge over there?
