Source: John Edwards has life-threatening heart condition

A federal judge has disclosed that former presidential candidate John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition, a court source told CNN.

Attorneys for Edwards were in a North Carolina courtroom Friday seeking a delay in his criminal corruption trial, scheduled to begin this month. The attorneys also sought a delay last month, saying Edwards had an unspecified medical issue.

Edwards - a former U.S. senator from North Carolina who sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 and 2008 - was indicted in June on six counts including conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws. He pleaded not guilty.

If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $1.5 million.

In September, the trial was delayed until January 30 after Edwards' attorneys said he needed more time, in part due to his position as the sole caretaker of his two youngest children, ages 11 and 13, after his wife, Elizabeth, passed away in December 2010.

A chief issue in the upcoming trial is whether money given to support Edwards' mistress, Rielle Hunter, by the then-candidate's benefactors should have been considered campaign donations, a contention Edwards' team has disputed. They maintain the money was a gift to Hunter.

Wow, some Justice system, would they care if the average person were in this position – NO NO No – off to the jail you go, someone speak up and demand a answer as to why he gets away with this.

That's simply not true. I have had clients with both misdemeanor and felony charges have their trials postponed and even waived due to medical conditions of all kinds. Come on, there's enough real class warfare without people like you creating it where it doesn't exist.

How ironic. Now the "Breck Boy" is at the mercy of all of the doctors he sued and got rich off of. Bad karma always catches up with you. I just feel sorry for his kids, as well as his late wife.

If it was such a life threatening thing, why is he waiting until February to have the surgery?

'his position as the sole caretaker of his two children' was the reason for the first delay??? maybe his mistress will keep an eye on the kids while he takes care of his mess...

I didn't think this bum had a heart. What a disgusting jerk! I always thought Edwards was a little too slick and an ambulance chaser. He is a Hypocrite. I am not sad about this news at all just like I sure as hell didn't shed one tear when that unethical, immoral piece of garbage, Johnnie Cochran, passed away. Cochran knew damn well he was putting a double murderer back in society and he could care less. Edwards made millions of $$ at the expense of some companies and is a total BUM. How can one have any sympathy for the way this guy conducted his personal life?

I do not agree with those who want John Edwards to be sick.
He is a human being, and the responsibility of punishing him with illness has not been delegated to me.

How extraordinarily convenient that this "life threatening" heart condition would show up now. I have serious doubts that he even has a heart.
