Gotta Watch: Oops! School signs spelled wrong

Students who struggle with their spelling lessons may have trouble finding positive reinforcement from some school signs we found spelled incorrectly. Check out these signs that spell trouble:

"SHCOOL X-NG" sign lacking "street smarts" – Since July of last year students at Marta Valle High School on New York City's Lower East Side have had to view a painted street sign outside of their school that was spelled wrong.

"People older than us always tell us to make sure we spell stuff right and this sign is wrong right in front of us," said Tanaysha Ebron, a senior at the school.

The sign, spelled "SHCOOL X-NG" on Stanton Street was corrected Tuesday.

"PUBIC schools" sign removed – A billboard meant to tout South Bend, Indiana, schools was removed after it caused a big stir in 2010. The billboard encouraged local residents to check out the "15 best things about our PUBIC schools." The sign was supposed to say "public" but the letter "l" was accidentally left out. Affiliate WSBT reported the company that created the billboard advertisement said the ad was proofread by four people and the typo was missed by all of them.

Too cool for "SCOHOL" – A "SCOHOL" zone sign in Lauderhill, Florida, attracted a lot of unwanted attention last year near Banyan Elementary School. Lauderhill resident Keith Mahl jokingly told affiliate WSVN the crew that made the mistake should be "sent back to third grade and given an 'F' for spelling." The company responsible for the error told WSVN the letters "h" and "o" are on the same stencil and they accidentally painted the letters with the stencil upside down.

Sh-Cool Pu.bic S-cohol, what are they trying to advertise, a top-less club!? That serves some new booze!? Or perhaps a "shcool" for those trying to learn the fine points of the exotic club biz, such as tending to your pubes & learning how to speak "drunk"!? I could have fun w/this all day! Bot gooto gou!!

I think it's interesting that the reporter who wrote the story that criticises a misspelled sign doesn't know the difference between an adverb and an adjective. The sign wasn't spelled "wrong"; it was spelled (take your pick) "incorrectly", "improperly","badly", or even "wrongly". But "wrong" is the wrong spelling.

Well, if the sign maker was German descent and spoke German or was Jewish, the word shule (German for school) may have interfered. Without the -e it means synagogue. The beauty of my second language–Spanish, is that it is almost 100% phonetical & it has had an Academy since 1713 [sic] which keeps the language Spanish. There are no ph- words in Spanish that's Greek but they have adopted the word foto. There are no ch- words in Spanish like chaos/caos, etc. We have deliberately or cruelly made English spelling a hoax just to irritate & confuse the little ones from the beginning. It is almost a conspiracy against the less fortunate learners who depend on their language to write as it sounds. It can be easily phoneticized thru my system called MCSPEKE (TM). There's nothing anti-democratic abt an Academy. It keeps everything in order. American-English is a chaotic linguistical mess visually with too many intrusive foreign words as is!

For your info: school in German is "Schule," not "shule."
