Occupy Oakland demonstrations, arrests inject new life into movement

Oakland City Hall was set to reopen Monday after municipal employees worked to clean up damage they said was caused over the weekend by Occupy protesters, about 400 of whom were arrested following clashes with police in this Northern California city.

The mass arrests, described by police as the largest in city history, appear to have injected new life into the Occupy movement as protesters in a number of American and European cities took to the streets Sunday to express their solidarity with the Occupy Oakland group.

"The Occupy movement will respond, as we have always responded: With an overwhelming show of collective resistance," Occupy Wall Street said in a statement posted on its website.

Occupy Oakland is part of a larger movement that began last year on New York's Wall Street and quickly spread across the globe. While the protesters have highlighted a number of causes, the overarching theme remained the same: populist anger over what activists portray as an out-of-touch corporate, financial and political elite.

From Philadelphia to Des Moines, there were reports of Occupy protesters taking to the streets in mostly non-violent demonstrations.

If you go back in history, you'll find that almost every war was started over land or economic inequality. Our government have better wake up and realize that in the last 20 yrs + they have went to far in the inequality.I believe they over estimated just how far they could go.Now they better give the lower end of the food chain a little more before it's to late.

@kandi im not crabby i just state the facts.ows is a socialistic communist organization with a lengthy rap sheet.and their 99percent thing is a socialist lie.if you like the idea of everyone driving the same car wearing the same clothes being told where they will live and told how much toilet paper they are allowed to use keep supporting ows.thats socialism and it doesnt benefit anyone especially the poor.the poor depend on that rich man to pay their wages and punishing the rich man will only make everyone poor.time for some angry protestors and their supporters to swallow the truth and understand life isnt fair and they live in the greatest country on earth.changing it to a socialist nation will only make it a third world nation where everyone is even poorer than they are now.thats a fact, they have socialist countries you can visit-greece north korea russia.ows and their supporters need to live there until they get it through their thick heads socialism does not work.

@kandi ows hasnt offered any solutions to their nonexistant problem.they are the ones with disbeliefs.the 1percenters pay more in taxes than you even though they pay a lower percentage. 30 percent of 20,000 is approximately 6,000 and 14 percent of 1,000,000 is 140,000 a substantially greater amount than 6,000 even though its at half the percentage you pay.making the rich man pay the same percentage has many damaging effects for everyone-less investors less jobs, higher prices, less jobs, less wages and in the end less taxes collected.those are the facts.ows has you believing a lie.you are terribly misinformed and full of disbeliefs.

@Jj they delete any opposition to their opinion just like on the first page in the book 1984.they also slander any other news orginization that doesnt do the same such as fox news.they label the tea party criminal(a tea party member alledgedly had a monkey sign) but fail to tell you the criminal acts of ows.(trespassing, vagrancy, loitering, noise pollution, disturbing the peace, theft, drug possesion and use, littering, obstruction of traffic, disruption of commerce, vandalism, arson just to name a few)thats not journalism-its SOCIALIST PROPOGANDA just like in the book 1984.

I told you that my ows hoods would create fear and chaos. If I don't get what I want, I'll send my thugs to your city. Remember, vote for me or you are a racist. The new democratic approach to being reelected – fear.

Why would one have a guilty conscience over their belief in OWS?
This statement is illogical. I find that people who talk about a guilty conscience are usually the ones suffering from one.

I haven't said one way or another whether I support OWS or not, Rhonda.
I asked a question: how does a guilty conscience relate to a belief in OWS?
