Family releases first post-crash pic of pileup victim

The family of a Brazilian teenager who was injured in a multivehicle wreck in Florida last month - a wreck that killed at least 11 people, including four of her relatives, amid dense fog and smoke from a brush fire - has released the first post-crash picture of her exclusively to CNN.

Lidiane Carmo, 15, is progressing at Shands at the University of Florida hospital, where she has been since the January 29 wreck on I-75 outside Gainesville, one of her uncles said.

The case of Lidiane, who has lived in the United States for most of her life, drew widespread attention after church members said she was an illegal immigrant, and they were afraid she could face deportation. But federal officials said last week that she would be allowed to stay in the United States.

Her father, Jose Carmo, was a pastor at International Church of the Restoration in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Lidiane came to the United States from Brazil when she was only 2, another pastor at the church told CNN; the family stayed in the United States after their visas expired, CNN affiliate WSB reported.

Jose Carmo; his wife, Adriana; their daughter Leticia; Jose's brother Edsom Carmo; and a companion were killed the in the wreck. Edsom Carmo was driving one of the church's vans.

The Carmo family's bodies were transported to Marietta on Wednesday, and a funeral is scheduled for Monday at a separate Atlanta-area church. Lidiane wants to attend but cannot leave the hospital, her uncle said.

"She is like any regular American girl. (But) she wasn't born here," the Rev. Aron Amazonas said last week. "She acts like an American girl. She almost can't speak the Portuguese language. She doesn't know the people there."

Fine, if we want to be that way – every human being needs to go back to Africa. Since "that's where we came from"

Question. Would you rather keep her here, even though she wasn't born here, but she grew up here and can speak English. Or would you rather keep that woman who was running for city council, but can't speak English even though she was born here. I know, some of you are thinking, neither one.

This girl just lost her ENTIRE family in a tragic accident, and all you're complaining about is immigration and medical bills? Are you serious? That is exactly one of the things that's wrong with our society. We value money and comfort over people. You don't have to be a saint to feel some form of compassion over the ordeal she will be facing. Money and legal issues, even if she would be forced to go to Brazil, would be the least of her worries. She has to endure the loss of her family for the rest of her life. Who cares about the bills. If I had the money, I'd GLADLY pay it off. It's called CHARITY people. Have a heart. If you care more about the other issues, then you might need to examine yourself. When's the last time you cared more about someone else than yourself?

Well said. Americans used to be very compassionate, but sadly, it is no longer true. What a pack of paranoid hateful losers we have become...sickening.

I can't believe people are being so cruel. She's 15 years old, people. her parents are responsible for illegal status, not her. Since when is it ok for the child to pay for the sins of their parents when it can be avoided? She's not even old enough to pay taxes yet!

As a US Army soldier serving in A’stan , it’s disturbing to hear that I am fighting for the protection of such heartless people. This girl is 15 years old and suffered and unimaginable tragedy that god willing many of us will never experience. Your answers are 1. Deport her or 2. Make her get a job and pay her hospital bills, unbelievable. While I’m not a fan of illegal immigrants, I do have compassion for what this teen is going through (let’s not forget, she’s only 15). Instead of moaning and complaining about sending her to a country she may have no recollection of and the hospital bills she has incurred why don’t we find a way to help her heal from this tragedy and become a productive citizen. @ SFC – Great point, and thank you for your service! Stay safe.

@ Realist – CNN was wrong for completely missing the point and writing an article soley for the purpose to expose that this girl is an illegal immigrant.

@ Realist, wrong in what way exactly? What Army, DOD regulation, or UCMJ article have I violated by posting my opinion on the matter? I have not said anything to discredit my country, those appointed over me nor the soldiers that I lead. As far as policing myself, I’m good. My shot group is tight. HOOAH!!!!

First of all "Thank you for your service and self sacrifice". Second "Thank you for the compassion that you feel for this unfortunate child". It's very disheartening to read some of the stuff that's been posted on this thread. It's no wonder that Americans have gotten such a bad reputation, just look at how we act and the things that we say. I for one wish this young girl a speedy recovery and hope she can heal from the loss she has endured. May she be blessed with the strength to carry on and the wisdom to realize that not all Americans are like the haters on here.
