Family releases first post-crash pic of pileup victim

The family of a Brazilian teenager who was injured in a multivehicle wreck in Florida last month - a wreck that killed at least 11 people, including four of her relatives, amid dense fog and smoke from a brush fire - has released the first post-crash picture of her exclusively to CNN.

Lidiane Carmo, 15, is progressing at Shands at the University of Florida hospital, where she has been since the January 29 wreck on I-75 outside Gainesville, one of her uncles said.

The case of Lidiane, who has lived in the United States for most of her life, drew widespread attention after church members said she was an illegal immigrant, and they were afraid she could face deportation. But federal officials said last week that she would be allowed to stay in the United States.

Her father, Jose Carmo, was a pastor at International Church of the Restoration in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Lidiane came to the United States from Brazil when she was only 2, another pastor at the church told CNN; the family stayed in the United States after their visas expired, CNN affiliate WSB reported.

Jose Carmo; his wife, Adriana; their daughter Leticia; Jose's brother Edsom Carmo; and a companion were killed the in the wreck. Edsom Carmo was driving one of the church's vans.

The Carmo family's bodies were transported to Marietta on Wednesday, and a funeral is scheduled for Monday at a separate Atlanta-area church. Lidiane wants to attend but cannot leave the hospital, her uncle said.

"She is like any regular American girl. (But) she wasn't born here," the Rev. Aron Amazonas said last week. "She acts like an American girl. She almost can't speak the Portuguese language. She doesn't know the people there."

It never ceases to amaze me just how nasty and uncaring Americans, all a person has to do, is look at the disgusting post on any article on any website that shows a person on need especially a person of color and the hatred comes out. The land you call America, belonged to the native indians that were here before any of you so called "real americans" so give me a break, if everyone had to go back where they came from, there would be no one left in America!

This isn't an issue only in the United States.

I was told by German friends in Germany that it is not wise to go to certain areas (the East side of Germany) at certain times because there is a higher concentration of individuals who view me as an auslander and would prefer I leave immediately, if not sooner. Be that as it may, the West side of Germany is quite tolerable, although Germans in general can be particularly unwelcoming to Turkish immigrants. In the end, I realized that the Turkish were to Germany what the Hispanics/Latinos now are to America. Every country has its scapegoat. Everyone wants to blame someone for their woes and never themselves.

    To Serious:
Yes, I agree; however, there are extenuating circumstances that would need to be considered in this particular circumstance. I am very opposed to illegal immigrants, and more oppose to those criminals that commit violent crimes, distribute illegal drugs, participate in human trafficking, etc. I think those bottom feeders ought to be reckoned with first and not the orphaned 15-yr minor that is trying to recover from a monumental tragedy. I do support the death penalty, and we could save a lot of $$$ by taking those bottom feeders out first (illegals or home grown) with a rope or one bullet. No muss No fuss, take ‘em out, take ‘em down. There needs to be an overhaul of our government (federal and state) level and get a good grip on the illegal immigrant situation. There are special situations that need consideration. Notice the word “immigrants”, they too are human beings and “aliens” give the connotation of being from another planet.

I am glad that she is getting better. But she is in the country illegally and should be deported. The church where her father was the paster should be heavily fined for employing an illegal immigrant. The church should also be held financially responsible for all medical bills; the taxpayers should not have to foot this bill. The board members of the church should also be personally fined. We need to crack down on the people who enable those who break the law to stay illegally, particularly those who employ people who do not have the legal right to work in the country.

First off your a bad person for caring solely on her legal status more than how she is doing after the loss of her family. Second she wont be deported because she will officially be a ward of the state since she is a minor. Its people like this that make the world seem worse than it truly is.

Wow, what an unhappy and frustrated person you must be. I'm sorry, did I say person? BTW, your ancestors were also illegal immigrants once, did u know that??? Thank God there are a lot of better people than you in this country. Her family was serving their community, helping people out there. They were also paying taxes. Should I remind you that a lot of "americans" don't work and don't pay taxes??? Not to mention the americans who commit crimes. These, should be deported ! I'm sure this girl is a better person than you!!! She wouldn't say the same, if you were in her situation. You should be ashamed of yourself for being so cruel....

If you don't have anything good to say then shut your mouth, you have no heart or either feelings. I hope someday you realize what you wrote and be sorry for it. You have no idea what the members of the church has been through, they are suffering, we are all suffering. Don't worry cuz the taxpayers won't pay anything, we have a lot of people helping us with all they can, people that has a heart and knows God. I am sure God will make you think a little bit more different and give you some love. Have compassion for Lidiane's family, the church and church members.

Hey Gumbalay or whatever you call yourself. Please come and get me and put me out of my misery. Because if I have to live the rest of my life among cruel dregs such as yourself the sooner the better. We all want to complain about how Mexicans take all of our jobs–but I don't think they would have been here in the first place if we Americans weren't too proud to get our hands dirty or work in fast food joints or in packing houses, etc. The internet gives people like you a chance to hide. Listen I know there are a lot of immigrants who are here with less than sincere intentions, but that's because of our government. If somethings is going to be done someone actually has to stand up and do it. But as usual, too many politicians want to be relected rather than make the hard choices. There are a lot of decent, hard working, sincere and kind people in our nation. But its the idiots who spew their blather on these boards that causes people to think so poorly of us. If you are so proud of your comments–stand behind them and identify yourselves and don't hide behind your aliases. Oh yeah–I'm Max Flores from Placentia, CA and I approved this message:):):) oh yeah–I love Banasy and the other guy.."It's a frachini" or something like that:):):)

I live in California and work in the agricultural industry. Most people fail to realize that a very large percentage of illegal immigrants are women and older children or young adults. Like this family, they came here on a visitors visa see the father, who by the way is NOT, here illegally and exceeded their stay. For those who don't know how the system works, in order to apply for a visa, you must apply from your country of origin, then the process takes from 2 to 24 months. If it is determined that you have at anytime in the past been in the country illegaly, you can be denied.

So imagine sending your wife and young children back across the border by themselves, to make their way through central and south america to Brazil, where they must then apply for immigration status.

Karen, you have no common decency, to say nothing of common sense. This is a teenage girl, raised here since she was 2, who only speaks English. You're going to send her back to Brazil where she doesn't know a soul nor speak the language?

I thought America was a compassionate and caring country, for ALL. I agree we need to do something about illegal immigrants in this country, but this girl came over here at 2 yrs old, she didn't ask to brought here or to be illegal, this is exception to all rules ( and laws)....

Wow, it is great she is going to be OK and it is a terrible tragedy about her family....but she is here illegally, through no fault of her own. Yet many people conspired to break the law and continue it for years... That is not acceptable either...There is no easy answer but....logically she should be deported....emotionally she shouldn't.
So if you just want to be emotional thats fine but don't put down other people for wanting the Laws of the USA to be followed...all of them you don't get to pick and choose.
