Fans, celebrities react to Whitney Houston's death: 'We will always love you'

Legendary pop singer Whitney Houston has died at age 48, representative Kristen Foster said Saturday night.

The cause of death and where she died were not immediately known. In May 2011, Houston got help for her much-publicized struggle with drugs and alcohol, her representative said at the time.

According to her official website, Houston, who struggled with addiction problems over the years, sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos over her career.

As news of her death spread online her fans and celebrities tweeted that they were absolutely shocked and saddened at the news.

Among them: R.I.P Whitney Houston, #DearWhitney, #IWillAlwaysLoveYou, The Bodyguard, Bobby Brown and Wanna Dance With Somebody.

"The first full hour after the news broke saw 2,481,652 tweets and retweets, peaking at 61,227 tweets at 5:23 p.m. (all times are PST)," according to Topsy.com. "That is over a thousand tweets a second, not quite as much as during the Superbowl but still a lot."

Houston had been in Los Angeles and Grammy rehearsal parties were taking place one night before the music industry's biggest event. Stunned celebrities heard about the news all together.

People do not make a choice to 'one day become an addict'...the dope they have today is far more dangerous & addictive than years past. GIVEN ENOUGH TIME IN RECOVERY & ENOUGH TREATMENT EARLY ON...SOME ADDICTS DO SURVIVE. Just know that there by the grace of God could have been you or I. As a RN for 30 years...I'VE seen some very special people leave us much too soon...including 3 of my own brothers...my sister has been in recovery for 14 years! RIGHT ON! For an addict, a dat does not go by withou the thought of using. This is one more VIP SPECIAL person whose life touched us all & who has left us with the knowledge that her struggle was too much for her to continue to bear. RIP...Thank you for your gift shared with the world. I KNOW YOU WILL BE REACHING DOWN & GIVING YOUR BABY GIRL SIGNS ALONG THE WAY TO KEEP HER FROM HARM.

Brutus: I hope you are hit by a bus or better yet leave this earth in the most painful way as possible. From what you sound like, you don't even deserve to live. I hope you don't have kids, as you sound like an awful role model to them. You deserve the Bob Barker treatment.
