Legendary pop singer Whitney Houston has died at age 48, representative Kristen Foster said Saturday night.
The cause of death and where she died were not immediately known. In May 2011, Houston got help for her much-publicized struggle with drugs and alcohol, her representative said at the time.
As news of her death spread online her fans and celebrities tweeted that they were absolutely shocked and saddened at the news.
Tributes began flooding in almost immediately as people began expressing their shock at the news. Nearly all of the trends on Twitter worldwide were shortly associated with the singer's death. Among them: R.I.P Whitney Houston, #DearWhitney, #IWillAlwaysLoveYou, The Bodyguard, Bobby Brown and Wanna Dance With Somebody.
"The first full hour after the news broke saw 2,481,652 tweets and retweets, peaking at 61,227 tweets at 5:23 p.m. (all times are PST)," according to Topsy.com. "That is over a thousand tweets a second, not quite as much as during the Superbowl but still a lot."
Houston had been in Los Angeles and Grammy rehearsal parties were taking place one night before the music industry's biggest event. Stunned celebrities heard about the news all together.
Mariah Carey, who famously performed a duet with Houston on "When You Believe" was stunned by the news.

My Nippy is dead! one of the worst days of my life! An icon, the original diva, the amazing singer... Rest in Peace and my prayers go to Bobbi Chris, to Cissy, your brothers, Dionne,Pat houston.... I will always love you
What a loss! May she rest in peace and the tabloids will finally leave her alone. shame on them...Your music will be timeless
Why does it seem like God only takes the best to be with him in heaven at such an early age?
Sigh....I agree.
If you think a criminal, law breaking adult who allowed herself to abuse her body, mind and privilege by using drugs is "the best" then you are truly in denial of reality. Also, if there is a god, then is just the type of person he/she does not want in heaven. By abusing her body, she was desecrating the lord's temple. How convenient you like to dismiss facts to make yourselves feel better.
@Jeff .......Life is not over for you yet, who know what perils await you...one should be careful when judging so harshly, and might I remind you: 'Thou shalt not judge' and last but not least, 'There but for the grace of God go I.'
People it is not our place to judge Whitney she made mistakes just like any one of us The God we serve has Grace n her sins will b forgiven we must understand that the bible says there is no sin that is greater than the other it was her time to leave my heart pours out to her family my the lord comfort them in his warm hands thank you Whitney for all u have done for us the music industry won't be the same without u rest in peace love valnim
beautiful talent wonderful elegence true inspiration love u
Thank you Whitney, for having shared your beautiful voice with all of us. Although you have gone from us, your voice will go on, and continue to bring us joy and beauty. God bless you.
I have loved Whitney from the very first time I herd her sing. There is not doubt she was the best there ever was or will be. Every one strugles whith their own deamons, we all do. I will miss her voice and her beauty. She was myfavorite of all time. Rest in peace, I will never forget you.
She was a big part of my high school years. I remember listening to her music all the time with my friends. Definitely brings back happy times growing up with her music. RIP Whitney Houston.
This just in, a duet with Amy Winehouse scheduled for Tuesday
Death is death. The only tragedy here is yet another adult displaying a total lack of respect for herself and those who, at one time, looked up to her as a role model. There are plenty of humans out there, who haven't had the chance, that would have respected their body, taken care of themselves and lived a long and charmed life. she died as nothing more than another irresponsible drug addict who took no accountability for her life and to think differently is simply a HUGE denial of reality upon your part.
OK! OK! OK! She's dead....This is "BREAKING NEWS" overkill! There really isn't anything else to talk about UNTIL a cause of death is determined. Then, you can have your tribute shows and then MOVE ON! I mean, it's not like she was anybody that was REALLY important...she was a singer...I thought she was a great singer...but, come on! Newsworthy, yes. But, DOMINATE the news.....no. There ARE other things going on out there in the world. This should be a "blip" in the news and a story.....but, that is it......
Whatever her faults, Whitney had a powerful, positive impact. A remarkable voice; a tragic loss. May our songstress now fly free of the travails of mortality.
Lets get to some real news now. Whitney WHO???? Move on.
It's sad how much ignorance there is in the world regarding drug addiction. And why is it always the "Christians" among us who are the most ruthless and unforgiving? RIP Whitney–there but for the grace of God go all of us.
"Stunned" by her death. Really? She was a known crack addict. I'm not the least bit surprised.
It is with astound disbelief and sadness that the people of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have learned this morning of the passing of the delightful entertainer Whitney Houston. Whitney was a guest at the royal palace in Amman some few years back and it was an honour for our family and our nation. We unite in prayers for her family at this most difficult and challenging times. Peace be with you all-
Prince Hamza
