"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads." So said Doc Brown at the end of "Back to the Future" just before he took off into the sky in his famed DeLorean.
The road less traveled or not traveled at all, in some very cool cars, has us talking today. The idea came to us after we saw a piece on a folding car that's perfect for the avid parallel parker. Adjust your mirrors and fasten your seat belts for today's Gotta Watch.
Folding car
No, it's not a Transformer, but wouldn't it be cool if this electric car from the brains at MIT made that Transformer sound? Watch the video to find out how much it'll cost you to drive the fold-up Hiriko two-seater.
Up, up and away!
Getting from here to there on the street? That's so five minutes ago. Check out this plane-car hybrid for the traveler who wants the best of both worlds.
Dive and drive
If you prefer mermaids to meter maids, strap on your SCUBA gear for this underwater wonder, which caught our eye back in 2008.
So what? We have cool vehicles to get us to family courts where our rights and money get stolen by broken process? WHOOPIE... FOCUS ON THE ESSENTIALS BRAINIACS... A legal system that is honest, reliable and integrous. I know.. I know... It's going to be a challenge to downgrade a lawyer's agenda... but TRY to improve America. At least TRY.
why would a bunch of kids in a TECHNOLOGY school try to fix the judicial system? someone's been through the system one too many times.
Dee – Why? Because IT'S A F'N SYSTEM NITWIT. That's WHY our judicial "system" is broken. Incompetent and dishonest lawyers have taken control of "the system". TIME FOR CHANGE.
So What SoWhat!
So, so what, you didn't like the cars and decided to through a rant about something else that is bugging you ! Gesh, back off a little, this is about cars.
@So What – Got an axe to grind? Grind it somewhere else. Like CNN.com's Polical section.
Andy – I agree with SoWhat... it's about PROGRESS... the "cars" is the ice on the river... EXPAND YOUR MIND.
Physics Major: OK ! I will try to expand my mind a try very hard what SoWhat said has anything to do with the story. MmmmMmmm , no can't do it !
Thank you for your articulate response to the story. My sentiments...exactly! What is the chance that anyone but one of the banking crooks can afford this folly? Perhaps they should add a half dozen of these to their inventory of private jets.
Ok, you completely missed the point. The people working on these projects are not part of the government, so do not follow what they say (and even if they did, there would be partisan war fighting over what pet projects would be going after, which is not the case). These are science geeks (And I use the word lovingly) taking what they know and trying to improve something we have. Yes, since they cannot mass produce yet, it is ridiculously expensive. Not to mention, no matter what anyone thinks, I do not believe they are going to hand out drivers licences to flying vehicles like they do now to the other ones. There are far too many people on the roads who cannot drive properly, I cannot see us letting people fly who cannot follow basic rules.
The Problem I have with the article, is the cost of the folding car...city cars are supposed to be less expensive, it makes no sense currently to buy the current city cars since they cost more than conventional vehicles. I like the shared idea, but it will never catch on in the US, which is owner oriented.
Otherwise... we won't be able to afford cars, gas or insurance AFTER our rights and money are stolen.
@sowhat – off your meds again i see.
dman0001 – Spoken like a another cheap "dime a dozen" corrupt lawyer or judge who simply want people to shut up about the corrupt judicial system in America. TIME FOR CHANGE.
Next time that happens, I think you should just run up to the bench and start throwing punches at the judge. Then post on CNN letting us all know how it went.
Stay on topic, and people might listen to you. Spouting your agenda in an article that does nto pertain to it in the least only hurts your credibility.
Got a gripe? Post it on a random CNN This Just in Story. It doesn't matter which one. It doesn't need to be relevant. We just want to read about your gripe. Or, just leave a voice message at 1-800-BIG-RANT.
Exactly. It's called, "Eyes, circulation, exposure." Glad you absorbed the impression. That's all.
A convertible car that goes under water...doesn't seem very useful. Kinda like a submarine with screen doors.
Designed by lawyers... get it? More money for them... more pain for everyone else...
There aren't any "doors" on submarines in the first place, so your analog doesn't ... hold water. 🙂
:Just about all I can express is, I don't know what to rellay say! Except of course, for the fantastic tips which have been shared using this blog. I'll think of a million fun methods to read the articles on this site. I'm sure I will ultimately take a step with your tips on those things I could never have been able to take care of alone. You are so clever to allow me to be one of those to profit from your valuable information. Please know how a great deal I enjoy the whole thing.
Too many videos on CNN. I want the stories!
You guys sound like the people in the last century who pronounced automoblies to be completely useless, the same people who said why do we need steam-powered ships when sail works just as well? Hey guys, we're at the beginning of a new era in automotive technology. Get with program and stop whining about your "rights," which look safe enough to me.
This silliness has been going on for at least the last 50 years and these whack-o ideas just continue to produce curiosities (and always will)
Do you know how many sail makers got put out on the street because of steam-powered ships? Think of how much damage the automobile has done. Street sweepers no longer had poop to scoop and they were out of work too. I won't even get into the pollution problem or how paved roads and snow removal cripple state budgets. :-p
Imagine the first time you heard of the internet or GPS. I'm not saying a folding car is on par with those ideas but trying to be innovative is always a good thing.
if you are referring to flying cars, I can only pray that they control it better than ground vehicle licenses, since virtually no one follows the law there. We should only have 1/3 of the drivers on the road that we currently do, at best.
And before you whine, it is a privilege, not a right.
That underwater car would have come in handy years ago.
I know right!!
The car can float, fly whatever, DWD, Driving While Democrat will still be the #1 cause of death in America as it is now.
Go drive in the bluest parts of America, technology cannot overcome a Democrat driver who has a total disregard for human life.
Dem or Repub. They're the same. All that's changed is the name. I'd like to drive a vehicle that was all terrain and airborne. There's one small problem...crashing even from 5 feet off the ground is probably fatal.
There are a few cars that convert to boats already, so that people can bypass lines and cross waters.
Yeah... That's what America needs now... Under water cars... Who is funding this crap?
Probably the Democrats funding it, just like they fund all that useless green technology that isn't getting our country anywhere except into more debt.
Generally private investors and entrepreneurs. This is not government research, not taxpayer funded to the best of my knowledge.
Uh oh, looks like he left the top up
America needs folding cars... can't wait until electrical failures make people get stuck in them. lol
OK SoWhat, put on this cool jacket with the buckles and the long sleeves. We'll take a little ride and go talk to some nice doctors. They'll give you some candies and put you in a room with soft walls. Won't that be fun?
Try improving the BASELINES in society, like our broken court system – BEFORE wasting funds on "underwater convertibles"... LOL
Oh my. Don't make us tase you, sir. That wouldn't be fun for anyone.
OK guys, agreed our court system needs to get fixed. But why so much hate to the lawyers? You all know who you will be calling first if you end up legal trouble, a lawyer.
If you want to fix the system, vote Libertarian! There won't be any laws to begin with so how can you break one?!?
Yeah! That's right!
Vote Librarian!
Ummm...what?
Libertarian?
Oh. Well, that's quite different.
Never mind.
CNN, as if all you ads weren't bad enough (the ad at the top of the homepage is EXTREMELY irritating)...you go and put commercials at the start of every single video on your website. I am rapidly loosing patience for your website and rank among the worst I've ever encountered!!!
Andrew, Use the FireFox browser and install the Add-On called AdBlock. (Search for it in the Add-Ons from the tools menu at the top of the browser). Since I have installed it, most banners are gone, and I haven't seen an ad on a video yet! It"s awesome!
Hope the scuba divers don't get stuck in the car.
lol, you heard GM has comming out with a new car? Its called a *fillibuster,* and it will run forever!
