Jury recommends 26 years in prison for ex-lacrosse player

[Updated at 11:18 p.m. ET] A jury late Wednesday recommended a prison sentence of 26 years for former University of Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely, convicted of second-degree murder and grand larceny in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Yeardley Love, who also played lacrosse at Virginia.

The judge has the option of accepting that sentence or imposing a lesser one. The recommendation is 25 years on the murder count and one year for grand larceny.

The jury's verdicts were read earlier Wednesday. Sentencing has been scheduled for April 16.

Huguely, 24, was found not guilty on the most serious charge - first-degree murder - in the May 2010 death of Love, 22. He was acquitted on several other charges, including robbery and breaking and entering to commit larceny.

The sentencing range for a second-degree murder conviction is between five and 40 years.

A medical examiner ruled that blunt force trauma killed Love, and authorities alleged Huguely caused it during an altercation at Love's off-campus apartment, where a roommate found her dead days before graduation.

A defense attorney told jurors during closing arguments in Charlottesville, Virginia, that Huguely contributed to Love's death, but did not kill her and had no intent to do so.

[Initial post, 6:07 a.m.] Jury deliberations are expected to begin Wednesday in the trial of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of fatally beating his ex-girlfriend.

George Huguely contributed to his ex-girlfriend's death, but did not kill her and had no intent to do so, his attorney said during closing arguments Saturday.

"Yes, George contributed to her death. But no, he didn't kill her ... he left there with her alive, and that is not in dispute. There was no intentional killing, because she wasn't dead when he left," defense attorney Francis Lawrence said.

How didn't he get life, especially in Virginia. FOr the horrible death she was to have had, he should be going to Death Row.

Lets discuss ethics. The 25 year old man who threatened to blow up the airport on Christmas in 2009 was given 43 years or life in prison. Nothing was detinated, nor anyone but the mortor was injured ( his growing! Ouch). This guy was reckless and intoxicated when he decided to murder his xgirlfriend and received 26 years in prison in which he would probably do half of that. People argued that he should only get a couple of years in prison because he could get another chance. He was a lacrosse player in college and I beleive he was intellegant enough to know better. The 25 year old bomber was from Yemen and never had a chance, he was brainwashed and did what was intructed to do. He could be taught a little more about life and the good things life could offer. This lacrosse player had it all and decided to take a life. Why not give him life? This is an act of wickedness. The mortor is an act of foolishness because he knew not.....

Perhaps you should pay more attention to the news. The Christmas day bomber was very well educated, his father is a Nigerian multi millionaire with 2 million-pound town homes in London. He went to private prep school and then a well known British college where he studied engineering. He decided to follow an Islamist extremist and he almost killed multiple people. The cases are NOT comparable. However, George Huguely deserves a strict sentence due to his past abuse of Ms. Love and his own assertion in an email that he should have killed her before. The only things the Christmas Day bomber and George Huguely have in common are privileged lives. Shame on the both of them! Shame on them for their selfishness and misplaced sense of righteousness. No-one has the right to take another person's life.

Both of these young people were very drunk at the time of this tragedy. I really wonder if she had hit him and killed him how would this have played out? I am sure she would have at the very maximum received a manslaughter charge or a self defense plea...this guy is no cold blooded killer. I am from the Baltimore area and we have heard about this case non stop from the day it occured. Just a horrible tragedy..

  8. You are a retard

This bastard should die. He left her "there" breathing and still alive = she was beaten to a bloody mess, unconscious and blood was coming from her nose and mouth as she exhaled. (Hence, she was still "alive" when he left.) So, she had minutes left to live... he's such a hero.

Money and power bought this kid a much lighter sentence. My hope is that the judge sees through the smoke and mirrors and sends Georgie away for as long as he can. Here's to karma and prison life... may you get raped unmercifully for the entire time you are incarcerated and die from rectal bleeding and brain damage. (Hence, when your prison roommate goes to trial, he can say he left you there still alive... not intending to kill you.) Idiots.

So why does "ex-lacrosse player" need to be in the headlines? How exactly is that relevant to the story?

I have asked the same question. I am sure he has taken pictures. Did an ex-photographer commit the crime? It is CNNs way of useless sensationalism. They continue to erode any credibility they had as a "neutral" source.

Because that is something he and the victim had in common. Also, reminds me what case the media is talking about, I won't remember his name 5 minutes from now.

Both the victim and the defendant were lacrosse players at their college, which is how they met/knew each other. Their entire social scene seems to have revolved around lacrosse, and many of the witnesses and their friends were involved in lacrosse as well. This case was so identified with the lacrosse teams that this was an inevitable tie-in. Obviously, since he's been in jail, he's an "ex-lacrosse player" now, and will be for quite a while unless an appeal is successfully taken.

George was one heckuva lacrosse player. I'll never forget that game he had against Stony Brook in 08' when he put shots to derail their upset bid. He was the finest Virginia ever saw, and it's a shame his talents will be 'locked up'. Oh well, maybe they have a lacrosse team in prison?

  11. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY

Wondering whether he's innocent or guilty or whether he should have been given a longer sentence? Well, I'm wondering about the book deal he's goanna get! O' that's right, he wasn't acquitted like Amanda and Casey. But while some say that Amanda was indeed innocent, I just wonder how she could actually be innocent when she was able to place herself at the scene of the crime to actually identify and place the black guy at the scene of the crime. I know this women is guilty as charged! Hey, that's simple criminology 101!

And the worst thing to do while your roommate lay dead is to go on a shopping spree while parading the town smoking marijuana! Such a picture perfect saint portraying herself as a victim! Well, kudos to the American press that helped influence the Italian courts!
