Lucy goes lawless protesting aboard drillship

Who wants to get in a fight with Xena the Warrior Princess?

It seems that a major oil corporation doesn't have much of a choice. On Thursday Lucy Lawless, the actress who played Xena, and six other Greenpeace activists illegally boarded a drilling ship leased to Shell Oil off New Zealand's western shore. The group reached a 174-foot drilling tower and held a sign "Stop Shell #SaveTheArctic."

CNN spoke with Lawless on the Noble Discoverer Friday morning, the middle of the night in New Zealand. It was cold and noisy and she wasn't getting much sleep. But the actress didn't seem bothered at all. Asked to describe how she and the other protesters got on board, she said, "We walked like human beings wearing hard hats (but) I don't want to give away any trade secrets."

Greenpeace, in a statement, said the group had actually scaled the drillship which was in the Port of Taranaki in New Zealand. The activists were told to get off. But Lawless and the protesters refused to cooperate.

"We thanked them for adhering to their protocol," Lawless said, stressing that the exchange between the activists and authorities has been peaceful. "We know we'll be arrested. We have no choice but to stay where we are and send our message to the world."

Lawless said the activists are prepared to hunker down until their anti-Arctic drilling point is made. By early Friday afternoon it appeared that it was - stories were popping up across the Web and in news outlets across the globe about the stunt.

"We feel very much that what happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic anymore," Lawless said. "An oil spill can never be cleaned up because of the remoteness and the freezing temperatures. We risk trashing whole ecosystems and poisoning them from plankton on up. It's absolutely unthinkable."

The Noble Discoverer is owned by Noble Corporation and is contracted for operation by Shell, according to Shell spokeswoman Kelly op de Weegh.

Lawless and the other activists have "occupied" the drillship to prevent it from departing on a "6,000 nautical mile journey from New Zealand to the remote Arctic to start an exploratory oil drilling program that threatens to devastate the Alaskan coastline," Greenpeace spokeswoman Szabina Mozes said.

"We are disappointed that Greenpeace has chosen this method to protest," op de Weegh wrote in an e-mail to CNN. "Actions such as this jeopardize the safety of everyone involved. While we respect the right of individuals to express their point of view, the priority should be the safety of Noble's personnel and that of the protestors."

Shell is investigating how the activists got on board, op de Weegh wrote.

Lawless, a longtime environmental activist, has never done any protesting as extreme as this. She said she thought about her three children and her family when deciding whether to participate in the Noble Discoverer demonstration.

"The oil that is captured will be burnt in the air to rain more destruction down on our grand children," she said.

Lawless has no idea how many days she and the group will be out to sea. She brought some chocolate and peanuts with her.

"We're here as long as it takes," she said.

Gotta love it. You may a good point about how she got to New Zealand and then get chastised for being "stupid". Like she's never been to Hollywood. Lawless has two types of fans, lesbians and now the enviro-kooks. Now that's having purpose in life.

"Lawless, a longtime environmental activist, has never done any protesting as extreme as this. She said she thought about her three children and her family when deciding whether to participate in the Noble Discoverer demonstration."

But then she apparently thought, "meh, they're not important, they can get along fine without me."

I'll make you a deal, Xena, come up with a workable plan for 7 billion people to live without oil, and I'll join you. Until then, let the ridicule rain down.

Ok, put your money where your mouth is, buy an electric car, get solar panels for your roof. While your bitching about having to on without gas your solar panels will be paying themselves off, then paying for powering your house and your car on top of the gas you'd normally spend on. So your spending bill would be cut dramatically, while you continue to bitch and moan that people just can't get by without oil and gas. Maybe not entirely but they can cut down dramatically while saving a ton of money.

@ Jim Actually, before she moved back to New Zealand, she did own an electric car! She probably owns one in New Zealand too.

      February 25, 2012 at 6:22 pm | Report abuse |
    • Xena the hypocrite

The fact that someone would even use an "electric car" as a sign of being sensitive to the environment is absolutely insane. Most electricity is produced from coal in the US. Most car emissions are extremely low when compared to 30 years ago. We've actually cleaned up the environment while increasing the number of cars on the road.

If her concern is a potential oil spill ... then maybe stop pushing for deep well drilling which has greater risk. Or push for better safety measures.

This isn't about saving the world. It's about trying to find purpose in life after having a amateur acting gig.

I wasn't going to make any more comments on this story, but since real deal is so entertained by them, I'll don't want to dissapoint him/ her.

    – If she used a little less make-up, she could probably save a couple of rain forests single handed.
    – I looked her up on imdb to remind myself of her accomplishments. 20+ years of experience, but other than Spiderman and a few minutes of Xena, I haven't seen any of her stuff. And I've seen a lot of movies.
-Jj's point is well taken, the carbon footprint for this excursion must be enormous.

Wait a second. How can you watch the movies if you REALLY love the environment?!! What about those starving dolphins found off the coast of California this week following the mean whaling ships (about 2000 dolphins ... the largest recording of a mega pod ever)? What about the old growth forests that are dying for someone to climb up in them and live in them protesting their destruction (although sometimes trees do grow back...). You're not a hypocrite also are you?!!

Normally, I find Greenpeace's actions to be borderline eco-terrorist and their views a bit extreme. That said, they make a good point about arctic oil spills and the inability to clean them up. I reside in Houston and we still have the BP spill fresh in our minds – though the media has quickly forgotten. BP can provide all the sample data, etc. they'd like but fish are starting to show up with tumors and lesions in greater and greater numbers. It's pretty sad that because the negative effects weren't immediately noticed, that story has basically been swept under the rug. I am no scientist but I imagine a massive spill in the arctic would be catastrophic.

Environmentalists have political power and a few (very few) very wealth benefactors who like to see this type of media events. Greenpeace is no longer a respected voice for the environment, they exist nowadays only to protect their political power and to continue to bleed their benefactors.

The simple fact about the spill in the Gulf is it was nowhere near as bad as the enviro-wackos were hoping it was. I still suspect it was originally caused by enviro-terrorism that went awry. The truth is hidden 'cause Obama does not want the secret out.
