Greenpeace: "Xena" actress arrested after protest on drilling ship

Actress Lucy Lawless, famous for starring in the television show "Xena: Warrior Princess," was arrested along with six other Greenpeace activists early Monday for boarding a drilling ship last week in New Zealand, according to Greenpeace. She and the others who were aboard the ship without permission were released shortly after their arrest, the activist organization said.

CNN.com spoke with Lawless on Friday while she was having a restless night on the Noble Discoverer, a ship leased to Shell Oil. The ship was docked in the Port of Taranaki when the actress and other activists, on behalf of Greenpeace, made it on board to protest drilling in the Arctic.

The group was able to display signs on the Discoverer's 174-foot drilling tower. One sign said "Stop Shell #SaveTheArctic."

Lawless told CNN on Friday that she expected to be arrested for the stunt but that she and the others intended to remain on the ship for as long as possible. She stressed that exchanges between them and authorities had been peaceful.

"We feel very much that what happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic anymore," Lawless said. "An oil spill can never be cleaned up because of the remoteness and the freezing temperatures. We risk trashing whole ecosystems and poisoning them from plankton on up. It's absolutely unthinkable."

She is obviously passionate about the environment, which is difficult to consider as "pathetic"

She is also the lead actress in a highly successfully cable series on the Starz newtwork – their most successful show now in its third season. Seen by more viewers than Xena ever was

A has-been? That's funny. Have you seen her in Starz's "Spartacus"? Stunning series. And her husband, who produced all 6 seasons of Xena: Warrior Princess, is now producing Spartacus. She's actually a pretty darn good actor.

Last year I watched all 6 seasons of Xena. I enjoyed it. 🙂

Way to go Lucy!! You have managed to accomplish nothing. Why do celebrities (in her case 'C' list celebrity) focus on such moronic, insignificant issues?? Why not tackle an issue where you can really make a difference instead of “feel good” issues where there might be a real cause but at the end of the day you have not done anything to make the world a better place. The American dream is being shot down and the country is in greater is in a HUGE crisis. Why not take on the issue of “Save our Nation”, “Save the America Dream”, “Save our Economy”, or God forbid “Save the Family unit”. I'm sorry that you're a subpar ACTRESS, yes I used the politically incorrect term actress, not "female actor" and I truly am sorry you are a subpar actress! Why would you waste the time, $$, energy (fuel) that you are so concerned about that you go halfway around the world to get arrested doing something so asinine and insignificant?? Unfortunately you represent and are the perfect example of a huge problem we face in America – especially in Hollywood. You feel your life has no meaning so instead of standing up for a cause worth fighting for – Restoring Values and Virtues to a society whose priorities are so turned around that if you say God in school or in the workplace you will be slapped with a lawsuit, have the ACLU pounding down your door to protect those who might have a different belief. So you decide go to New Zealand, slap some posters on a ship that say "SAVE THE ARTIC" and get arrested... WOW!! With all of the problems we are facing in the world today I am truly shocked at the level of stupidity and the lengths at which people will go – focusing on insignificant issues trying to convince themselves and others that their life has meaning and that you’re making a difference by fighting a TRILLION $$ industry 1 poster at a time!! Give me a break... I am so sick of seeing and reading about dumb people who want to feel important by standing up for causes like “Save the Artic”. Don’t misinterpret what I’m saying. The earth is an amazing place and we should be consciences of the environment, poverty, 3rd world countries, etc… but the place you can make the biggest impact is in your own home, your community by making those around you better people because they know you. Take a long hard look in the mirror and fix yourself before you try and fix the world!

We need organizations like Green Peace. I'm against eco-terrorism, but I am all for peaceful protest against oil companies. Even if you disagree with whether Alaska should be drilled (I am with Lucy on this one), you have to admit that it takes a lot of courage and determination for the Green Peace activists to do what they do. If you think Green Peace's efforts look unreasonable, then that means other environmental groups' efforts look more reasonable by comparison. We need that. And we need to decrease the utterly sick addiction to oil. The only way to wean ourselves EVER is to start NOW.
I love how the only times Lucy gets into the news is by doing something worth being proud of. She doesn't get arrested for being drunk in public. She doesn't get into the news by having a gazillion failed relationships. She only gets into the news doing stuff she believes in.

When she stops using oil products I will take notice. Until then its a little hypocritical to protest something you yourself cause.

She is a hero. This is what it's going to take if we're to stop this planetary descent into madness, chaos and destruction. We have ONLY ONE PLANET, and we can't fix it once it's broken.

Already the threads of life and sustainability are unraveling. We're causing one of the biggest and most sweeping mass-extinction events in the Earth's history. We can't survive without an intact, healthy, fully-functional ecosystem, complete with biodiversity. Remember, this is the planet we leave to our children and grandchildren – We need to be conscientious custodians.

I applaud action-takers like Lucy Lawless for taking a stand for what's right.

The irony is not lost on me that Lucy was protesting Shell, yet she was in a Shell commercial 20 years ago. Maybe she still bore a grudge that she didn't get paid enough for the acting work on the commercial?

I hope they rowed out there to minimize the impact on the environment. Maybe Lucy Lawless should invest in foot-peddled generators to operate the telly so we can all watch her next show without the benefit of fossil fuels.

Yeah, great. Lets all admire her passion. Big deal. How about the fact that she is just plain wrong on the issue. We have to drill somewhere and people like her won't let it be around populated areas and now you can't even drill around the most remote parts of the planet. She's guilty of using oil...she obviously got on a boat, bet she hopped a plane too. Lets not even count how much making Xena cost this planet in terms of resources. Yeah, I'd like some sort of Star Trek transporter too and a miracle energy solution too...but we don't have it yet. So Lucy, stop using oil yourself before you decide to board drilling platforms you hypocrite. Xena burned up far more in the few years it was on than I will ever use in a lifetime.

good for her....well not the jail part.....other professional entertainers keep servants and waste valuable natural resources.

Lucy Lawless is using her celebrity and personal monies, to help improve the environmental conditions for the future...She deserves her fame.

Idiots making rude comments need to go back to whatever hole they crawled out of.....and do something useful.

I'm gonna go buy the Xena series....and support a deserving actress. and a good person.
