Greenpeace: "Xena" actress arrested after protest on drilling ship

Actress Lucy Lawless, famous for starring in the television show "Xena: Warrior Princess," was arrested along with six other Greenpeace activists early Monday for boarding a drilling ship last week in New Zealand, according to Greenpeace. She and the others who were aboard the ship without permission were released shortly after their arrest, the activist organization said.

CNN.com spoke with Lawless on Friday while she was having a restless night on the Noble Discoverer, a ship leased to Shell Oil. The ship was docked in the Port of Taranaki when the actress and other activists, on behalf of Greenpeace, made it on board to protest drilling in the Arctic.

The group was able to display signs on the Discoverer's 174-foot drilling tower. One sign said "Stop Shell #SaveTheArctic."

Lawless told CNN on Friday that she expected to be arrested for the stunt but that she and the others intended to remain on the ship for as long as possible. She stressed that exchanges between them and authorities had been peaceful.

"We feel very much that what happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic anymore," Lawless said. "An oil spill can never be cleaned up because of the remoteness and the freezing temperatures. We risk trashing whole ecosystems and poisoning them from plankton on up. It's absolutely unthinkable."

Woohoo Lucy, you are hot. I'm not a fan of greenpeace, but I won't hold that against you. I am all for conservationism. Rock On.

You want to stop companies from drilling for oil, don't protest the drillers, they are only supplying a product to those who need the oil for consumption. Go protest the companies who make the plastics which uses more oil than cars. Go protest the companies who make plastic bottles, plastic toys, plastic car parts, plastic anything and get them to start using a biodegradable plastic made from vegetable oils (it already exists) but be ready to pay more for products until that plastic becomes economically more viable and cost effective. Lucy maybe doing what she believes in but she's going about it all wrong and until the economy stop needing petroleum-based products, not just vehicles, there will always be oil drilling.

Yes, there is a limited amount of oil to be drilled and burning it in cars is a waste. Much better to leave it in the ground for future generatoins to make plastics and medicines and get serious now about developing alternative green energy.

Every single product that is currently made from petrolium can and has been made from cannabis hemp at a very small fracion of the cost... Look Up original model-T Ford constructed from and ran on HEMP. The plastict are also much more resilient as was diplayed by it's 1/4 inch thick Hempen Plastic wich in a demonstration By Henry Ford proved it capable of repelling sustained Cal. 50 M-2 Machine gun Fire!!!

Hahaha love the comment from the Alaskan who supports the oil companies and trusts them entirely to do "safe" drilling. Oh wait, don't you Alaskans all get a yearly check for oil profit sharing? Hmmmmm.

I do not believe any oil spill can be totally cleaned and there is no way to reverse the damage done to any ecosystem. What disaster is or will be too much? Why do I drink sring water? I can convince myself that it easier. My father swam, ate fish and drank water from waterways that are too polluted now. We need to devekop alternative fuel sources an stop saying so and so is worse and say what cqn I do.? And before anyone says oh sping water! I buy gallons and recycle.

Maybe she'll stop when she realizes that these actions limit her credibility as an actress for certain roles.
