Actress Lucy Lawless, famous for starring in the television show "Xena: Warrior Princess," was arrested along with six other Greenpeace activists early Monday for boarding a drilling ship last week in New Zealand, according to Greenpeace. She and the others who were aboard the ship without permission were released shortly after their arrest, the activist organization said.
CNN.com spoke with Lawless on Friday while she was having a restless night on the Noble Discoverer, a ship leased to Shell Oil. The ship was docked in the Port of Taranaki when the actress and other activists, on behalf of Greenpeace, made it on board to protest drilling in the Arctic.
The group was able to display signs on the Discoverer's 174-foot drilling tower. One sign said "Stop Shell #SaveTheArctic."
Lawless told CNN on Friday that she expected to be arrested for the stunt but that she and the others intended to remain on the ship for as long as possible. She stressed that exchanges between them and authorities had been peaceful.
"We feel very much that what happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic anymore," Lawless said. "An oil spill can never be cleaned up because of the remoteness and the freezing temperatures. We risk trashing whole ecosystems and poisoning them from plankton on up. It's absolutely unthinkable."
I would love to see her try this in Russia when Gazprom or Lukoil drills in the Arctic.
Fond of fascist states are we ?
In Soviet Russia, Big Oil drills YOU!
should have shot the pirates.
Why didn't she show up to protest in Brazil when Obama was there promoting his giving them billions to drill off of their coast (with U.S. taxpayer dollars). Obama and the Dems say NO to drilling in ANWAR, NO to drilling in the Dakotas, and NO to the pipeline, but drilling in beautiful Brazilian waters? – NO PROBLEM. This is the height of hypocrisy. We cannot drill in the barren ANWAR region to benefit the U.S., but Brazil, with our money, may drill in their pristine water? What say you, Dems?
If the article is correct one of the main reason is that oil spills in the arctic cannot be cleaned up because of the harsh environmental factors. Equatorial waters at least can be cleaned.
At least that is my reading of the article.
Because she's a citizen of New Zealand, and Brazil is far away. Why don't you fly to China to make snarky comments?
From one Alaskan to another Thank You, and this is comming from a 25 Year Green Party MEMBER. and as for Mr. Obama as a person Borne on july 4th, I believe in constitutional History. She has a nice rack...
always did
So a woman who made her career in an energy wasting profession with no purpose beyond entertainment is now complaining about energy resource use? Too funny
Too bad they didn't keep her in the lockup. She needs a good dose of confinement, and that's just for starters. They all do as a matter of fact.
"They"?
That's what you do when you don't have a job and your last hit ... was with a Spartan!
Wrong! It's a Thracian and currently in Spartacus and looking good I might add!
These people need to get a job. Way too much free time on their hands.
last time I checked, t-shirts were usually made out of cotton... nice try..
Never seen blue cotton, additivies from crude are are used in the dye and the paint on the Tee shirt.
So, someone went off and deliberately did something illegal for the expressed purpose of getting arrested. And guess what happened? They got arrested. That's not news any more so than the fact that my toaster produced a slice of toast this morning. Maybe if I hadn't put a slice of bread into it and pressed the lever down, that might be news. But I did put the bread in and did press the lever and so the sudden appearance a minute or two later of toast isn't new-worthy.
Neither is the appearance of a pointless comment by an idiot. Go butter your toast.
that comment was meant for "Shane" which apparently got deleted.. Lucy you are a great role model!
The only thing I know about Xena Warrior Princess is the main character had an epic rack.
I just hope Shell can sue her for the money they lost while she held up their ship. She has money that they should be able to go after...
She did something for a cause she believed in, doing something that happened to be illegal, and she was arrested.
Did it help or hurt her belief?
Time will tell.
End of story.
Maybe the polar bear cam can show us how they all went up.
I wouldn't kick her out of bed in the morning for eating Frosted Flakes, but I might decline to drive her home in my vehicle given that I like the idea of being able to buy gas rather than walk.
