Greenpeace: "Xena" actress arrested after protest on drilling ship

Actress Lucy Lawless, famous for starring in the television show "Xena: Warrior Princess," was arrested along with six other Greenpeace activists early Monday for boarding a drilling ship last week in New Zealand, according to Greenpeace. She and the others who were aboard the ship without permission were released shortly after their arrest, the activist organization said.

CNN.com spoke with Lawless on Friday while she was having a restless night on the Noble Discoverer, a ship leased to Shell Oil. The ship was docked in the Port of Taranaki when the actress and other activists, on behalf of Greenpeace, made it on board to protest drilling in the Arctic.

The group was able to display signs on the Discoverer's 174-foot drilling tower. One sign said "Stop Shell #SaveTheArctic."

Lawless told CNN on Friday that she expected to be arrested for the stunt but that she and the others intended to remain on the ship for as long as possible. She stressed that exchanges between them and authorities had been peaceful.

"We feel very much that what happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic anymore," Lawless said. "An oil spill can never be cleaned up because of the remoteness and the freezing temperatures. We risk trashing whole ecosystems and poisoning them from plankton on up. It's absolutely unthinkable."

If she wishes to boycott petrolium, perhaps she should start by ending her movie career... after all movies are distibuted in the form of film/DVD and other forms of petoplastics!!!

Mittens, stop being condesending. Try making your point clear instead of just attacking spelling. It's the lowest form of debate.

Also, what I am doing is a low form of debate and I appologize, but I felt it had to be said.

I applaud her convictions but is she again drilling for oil or just drilling or oil in the artic? I mean, they had to use fuel to get on a boat to get their in the first place. She had to use fuel in her fuel efficient vehicle to get to the boat or the airport that flew her to where her greenpeace boat was waiting for her. She had to use gas to get to the shoots for BattleStar Galatica and Spartacus. I do applaud her, God knows I love me some Lucy Lawless, BUT the free publicity accomplished what? What is the end state, the goal? Her story will get lost behind the Michigan election hype. The Syrian death toll. The rising gas prices. The Quran bombings retaliation. The Death of 1 student and 4 wounded. Again, not knocking her but what did she hope to accomplish? Did they stop drilling on the rig? Did all Artic drilling cease? Ok, I'm aware of the drilling and oil spills in the Artic. Tomorrow, operations in the Artic will continue. Unemployment will barely dip. Dont get me wrong, A story with Lucy Lawless is worth reading, ANYTIME!!! That shirt is hot on her by the way..... SMOKING!!!!

Biofuel = no need to drill for oil. Also, solar energy, although it's not "feasible" because energy giants can't control that form of energy exactly.

Your post is dead on. You cannot be "against" something that you yourself use on a daily basis. And not just for the automobile aspect either. Anything plastic is also included as I recall... Maybe folks that are against drilling, should really be calling for limited drilling. I do understand Lucy's goal but go totally green if you want to project a higher then mighty stance. Ride a bicycle... to work, to rallies etc etc..

I thought it was pretty clear. They are against oil drilling in the arctic. I'm sure there are other places too, but clearly this protest is focused on the arctic. Pretty straightforward really.

      It is *very* clear.
She is against drilling in the *Artic*.
Some people just can't see the forrest through the trees, or are unwilling to read an article.

Ah...the article says she is against drilling in the arctic, not against the use of oil...did you even read the article?

may I suggest that people do a little research on Lucy before making nasty comments. I've had the pleasure of meeting Lucy and been a fan of hers for many years. She is in no way a has been actress. She has been in at least 52 films and tv series since 1987. She sponsers children from 3rd world countrys, is a trustee for the Starship childrens hospital in her home town of New Zealand, donates thousands to various charitys she is involved with and much more.
What Lucy is doing is using her status as a celeb to bring attention to the world that we need to stop drilling for oil and destroying our planet. Yes we are all in need of affordable fuel, but the costs of those *affordable* fuels are rising all the time. We need to look to cleaner energy use now, not wait until the last minute when every drop has been drained from the planet, then running around like headless chickens wondering how the hell we are going to run our transport etc. You do know that there is only 3 years worth of oil in the Arctic right? Shell is prepared to risk destroying the fragile Eco system for 3 years worth.
Lucy is thinking of her children, and she does not think she is above the law. She know's the consequences’ of her actions. Yet she still decides to stand up for what she believes in. maybe instead of criticizing from our armchairs we should join in and help, after all climate change is going to affect us all, and not all of it in a good way. Burying our heads in the sand is not going to make this go away, if we don't do something now, then you people that don't give a dam won't have nothing to worry about. Because there will be nothing left, but a barren wasteland of a planet.
I'm proud of Lucy for standing up for what she believes in, and I support her !00%

You have completely lost your mind... 3 years of oil in the Arctic!!! The Trans Alaskan Pipeline was completed in 1977, can you do math or just spew stupidity? Have you ever even seen an oil rig? Do you have any idea how many wells have been completed and put into production without a single drop of oil being spilled? What happened in the Gulf of Mexico WAS NOT AN OIL SPILL... It was a well blowout!! Since that happened, so many protections have been put into place that one can hardly work offshore anymore, stopping every thirty seconds because of some new regulation that effects when and where a worker can go potty... SMDH Even most dogs know not to bite the hand that feeds them... #irritatedoilfieldworker

  11. fear and loathing of big oil

Because of the high demand of oil we are trading eco-systems for our indulgences. The big oil corps are wreckless and could care less about destroying anything to keep their ridiculas profit margins. The are very few undisturbed vibrant eco-systems left. We are slaves of oil because 95% of everything is connected to it in some way. It seems so hopeless and unsolvable. If only there were better safeguards from spills

Are these Hollywood Stars aware that petroleum products are essential to all the plastic surgeries they are getting and produce the fuel for their SUVs and airplanes? When I see them using kayaks to get to the artic and bicycles to get to work, then I'll take there causes seriously. Oh and let's not forget that they are breaking the law but perhaps that doesn't apply to them either.

I am all for living green, but can any of you honestly say you do, 100% of the time? I know I wish I could be more greener, heck we all live in houses made of wood, even if you live in the forest in a tent, you still use wood to light a fire to keep you warm! My personal opinion is all natural resources are in the earth for a reason, oil wasn't magically formed inside the earth for the sake of humans sucking it up, it has a purpose and should be left alone, like any other natural resource.... ever wondered why we are getting far more devastating "acts of nature"? But alas in this day and age we can't live without natural resources. Good for her for having beliefs, we all have them. I know her attempt to stop it wont work, but at least it gets the word out...Just my 2c worth.
