Texas 'navy' to patrol the Rio Grande

Texas is getting its own navy.

Next month, the state's Department of Public Safety will deploy the first of a fleet of six gunboats on the Rio Grande, the river that forms the border between the state and Mexico, CNN affiliate WFAA-TV reports.

The 34-foot-long boats, each powered by three, 300-horsepower outboard engines, will have bulletproof plating and six machine guns apiece, not unlike the river patrol boats the U.S. Navy used during the Vietnam War.

The vessels will be able to operate in as little as 2 feet of water, according to the report, and will work with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to combat drug smuggling coming across the Rio Grande.

"They're finding out when those people are coming across, and one of the things they need to be able to do is interdict them on the water," Texas state Rep. Paul Workman told CNN affiliate KVUE-TV when the first of the boats, the JD Davis, was christened in December.

"If you're trying to suppress organized smuggling activity, there's no substitute for putting people on the ground," Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven C. McCraw said at the December ceremony. "The way they're operating right now, you need them on the water as well."

"It sends a message: Don't mess with Texas," Jose Rodriguez, a regional commander of the Texas Department of Safety, told WFAA.

The six boats will be named after Texas state troopers killed in the line of duty. The first was named after Jerry Don Davis, who was shot and killed in 1980. Another, to be commissioned Thursday in Austin, will be named in honor of  trooper David Irvine Rucker, who was killed in 1981, according to The Brownsville Herald.

That's a nice looking boat. It's not the first. One of the Parrishies in Louisiana uses similar boats. They also have an automatic grenade launcher on one.

A lot of people have wondered why the Army and Navy don't do more about border security. The simple answer is that it's illegal. Look up 'posse comitatus' on google.

While on active duty with the Marines, I worked some with JTF-6, which was a joint command that functioned as a liaison between the military and civilian law enforcement, primarily the border patrol. Presidents Reagan and Bush decleared illegal drug trade a threat to national security; therefore, the U.S. military was able to conduct training exercises along the U.S./Mexico border. Drug traffickers and illegals are not going to try to sneak through a military exercise and as a result were funnelled to waiting Border Patrol agents. The number of drug traffickers and illegals coming across the border went down. Then, under the Clinton administration, program was cut back and is now all but gone. Since this was maintaining security along an international border, it did not fall under posse comitatus and was not considered martial law or military enforcement of civilian laws.

HumaneShooting armed drug runners....this is a bad thing??? HOW????Humane? Are the illegals being "humane" when they sell drugs to your kids that result in them being addicted, drying? Humane when they rob and shoot an elderly farmer? Break into your home or car? Is it "humane" when our tax dollars pay for the free care they get, healthcare, food stamps, welfare, education, when our elderly are living in tent cities? Shooting criminals who are committing crimes to enter this country or to bring drugs into it is a GREAT idea! If these vermin realize that they can't come here and prosper at the expense of the US taxpayer, only the honest person who wants to immigrate legally and become a contributing, productive member of our society will come. And THAT is a GDOOD thing!

Humane way of controlling the border, are you serious. That's the reason why things have gotten out of hand. Mexicans are shooting at our officers, that are patrolling on American soil. How long do we have to put up with their BS. Some time you have to play by their rules. Do anyone care about our border patrols that get shot at on a daily basis, and they are on US soil. I don't have an issue with immigration, I do have a problem with illegal immigration. Wheather you agree with the law or not, its still the law. I've seen personally how the illegals tear down the farmer crops, leaving trash and debris, and now they are shoot at our border patrol officer. How humane do you remain. Fight fire, with fire, its simple as that.

These cartels have millions just for play money – they've even built their own submarines. And it's usually the redneck yahoo's that volunteer for these "shoot'em" type jobs – exactly the type that shouldn't even get a licence for a slingshot. Look at the Mexican War, EVERY BATTLE against the Mexicans, they outnumbered the American force EVERY TIME, and they were beaten EVERY TIME. They are just animals that use slaughter. Any time they would come up against a better organized force, they would be slaughtered.

Took dozens of them, with all their AKs and RPGs, to kill one old man - Alejo Garza Tamez - armed with just a few hunting rifles, and he managed to take four of them with him.

Vatopendejo and his pals would be in a world of hurt if they go up against the Texas DPS "Navy."

The problem. my friend, is that the cartels can (and have) used grenades and other small arms without limitation. US law enforcement limits the kinds of weapons they possess and their use (note the armed and ARMORED bank robbers in N. Hollywood vs the LAPD; LAPD was terribly outgunned in scenes right out of the movie "HEAT". I was there).

It will be interesting to see what the US LEO response is should our people (and these boats) come under heavy small weapons fire as the international terrorists are using (and selling).

The Posse Comitatus Act prevents the US military from being used as a domestic law enforcement organization. Only the US Coast Guard and National Guard units under state authority may act in that manner. Otherwise, all the other branches are prohibited from doing so either through Posse Comitatus or DoD regulations.

Posse Comitatus from 1878...gee, no chance that's outdated and current needs weren't anticipated by Congress back then?

Yes, Posse Comitatus needs to be amended to allow the US military to patrol our borders - along Mexico, Canada, Cuba, etc. - with the Border Patrol handling assuming custody of folks "arrested" by the military.

And as a Texan...I don't like this because it means my state tax dollars are being diverted to do a job which is the responsibility of the Federal Government.

The US Military cannot operate within the Unites States. The only was this can happen is if the President declares Martial Law and that is not going to happen in this case. We could put the Coast Guard out there instead as they are not DoD, but instead are DHS. I think that border security is a federal responsibility and not that of each state. That said, Texas shouldn't have to be doing this nor should these use the National Guard without being Federalized, which brings up the whole Martial Law thing again.

Basically this needs to be a DHS function, not a state function and certainly not the US Military which is trained to fight and kill not guard things.

Not really true. Many jobs require workers to present an ID before being hired. Illegals often have fake IDs to get hired, but the taxes are still pulled out, and the worker can't claim the taxes due to the illegal status.

So, in reality, many of them actually do pay taxes. Add that to working their butts off, and you have people getting a raw deal.

Bullspit. Our social wellfare and law enforcement programs are being taxed to the max by illegals, they crime they bring with them, and the crotch fruit they drop on this side of the boarder that majically become citizens by virtue of hitting the ground a few hundred yards north of the Rio Grande. Those that do work drive drown wages for everyone else. Any "do the work that others won't do" effect that does exist would easily evaporate if we ended the left-wing socialist nonsense that allows people to live comfortably by mooching off the rest of us.

They do a helluva lot better than a legal resident barely scraping by on minimum wage, or just over, and paying taxes, health insurance, car insurance on it!

They go to our hospitals and sit in the ER for free healthcare with no intention of paying.. I worked in the Hospital system for many years you tell me they're not eating up local and state services??? Come move where the illegals live lets see how rosy it is for you.. Those that come here legally to educate themselves and make a better life I'm all for it. Those who come here illegally and have NO intention of adding value to the community that's where I have a problem! How many Hispanics do you know that have been here for 20+ years but still speak little to no English? If we did that in another country even Mexico.. you'd be ostracized.. and for good reason.

Them illegals tried to smuggle a boat load of dope onto the beaches of Malibu's Leo Carrillo State Park nine days ago (Feb. 20) and got BUSTED by the US Coast Guard in the wee hours of the morning... Doing the job that Americans do not want to do (go to jail). Should have blown them and their boat right out of the water as the crew tossed the bundles of dope into the Pacific Ocean. Those retards must not know about the US Navy's Fleet in San Diego or it's base a few miles up the coast from Leo Carrillo. There has been 7 busts at that state park in the past year.

And the part about them doing jobs that Americans will not do? They are driving down the wages of American jobs. Also, have you ever been into your local county or state government offices? I know many Americans who would want to work there, but the positions are FILLED by people who can barely speak English. Yet, if we apply, we would be expected to be "fluent" in Spanish !!

Joshua, You need to get your facts straight. Illegals are getting MANY services you are obviously not aware of. I recently lost my job and had to apply for several things I'd never gotten before. The forms I filled out for free lunch, Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) and energy assistance to pay my electric bill all say "you do not have to be a US citizen to qualify for these benefits". Obviously you have not gotten to the point where it has been necessary to apply for social services yet. You are lucky. It is eye opening when you discover the reason states like Texas, Arizona, California and Oregon are flat broke. These illegals and their massive amounts of young children have overwhelmed the system and there's nothing left for those of us who've worked and paid taxes our whole lives only to find there's nothing for us when disaster strikes and we find ourselves needing to apply for food stamps, etc. And illegals don't "just" do the jobs no one else will. You're obviously one of those people who want to believe they are all slaving away in the fields picking produce, etc. This is not true. It is true that they work under the table so when they apply for social services they claim to have no income. That's how they qualify for everything. I have to show a copy of my taxes and provide check stubs to even get an appointment. I'm sick of it! I worked for 17 years at the same job, but I made $13 too much to get help. They lie about having no income so they qualify for the maximum amount of assistance available. Something's very wrong with this system. Bottom line is, you may not want to believe it, but they do get free lunches, housing assistance, food stamps, energy assistance, health insurance, WIC, etc. They are even eligible to receive social security benefits whether they've ever worked or not. Add this up when most households have 5-8 or more members. Food stamps for six with a zero income is over $1000 a month. No wonder so many states are literally in bankruptcy. If you don't believe it, take at a look at the applications for these programs. It's BS to say the least.

Shows what you know. In California, they have overrun the state. They DO get welfare, not only healthcare which pays 100% for the anchor babies, but food stamps and cash aid too.....and the Dept of Human Services actually has flyers in their offices stating in english and spanish that DHS is NOT ALLOWED to ask their immigration status. Won't even go into the WIC they get too which provides most of the formula, baby food, milk, cheese, milk etc.

They have 8-10-12 people living in one house, and all having babies and collecting welfare! Then when they are old enough we educate them too in spanish.

You forgot the part about "call 911 if you've got the sniffles, getting a free ambulance ride to the ER and free medical care." Sure, it's not "free"... They'll get a bill that they'll never pay, and that the rest of us will end up paying for with our taxes.

You also forgot the part about "don't need a driver's license or insurance to drive."

You could also maybe mention that those "jobs no one wants" are being paid under the table in untaxed cash, or the illegals are using phony names and someone else's Social Security number, causing endless tax and benefits problems for hundreds of thousands of American citizens and legal residents.

The only free lunch they could get is if their EMPLOYER breaks the law when hiring them; paying cash and not taking any taxes out. MOST employers require ID to work for them, and even with a fake ID taxes still get taken out – taxes they'll never be able to claim for unemployment or for any other handout. Don't worry Stanton, they're taxes are still covering YOUR unemployment though, and your Medicare/Medicaid too.

Actually, they don't pay any taxes, that's a fallacy pushed by those that don't know what they are talking about. I've done taxes for a living so I know the truth. First, they use a fake or stolen social security number. Secondly they claim five exemptions and what that means, is they don't get any monies withheld in Federal and State taxes. They never file at the end of the year and then the employer gets a notice from the IRS stating the SSN isn't correct, but the IRS never follows up. Sure they pay into SS and Medicaid, but that is the only tax withheld. They then use our roads, use our schools, where we pay extra to teach them English as a second language and they then flood our ER rooms like they are their very own personal doctors office.

The problem is they no longer want to work as maids and landscapers, they are in violent gangs that commit crimes and sell drugs. I don't know how it is where you live, but a few years ago my town was invaded by thousands of illegal Mexicans. Our crime rate had been quite low, which is most likely the reason they came here as its rural and they figured we didn't have the police manpower to control them. Crime skyrocketed. We had hundreds of cars being broke into, drug use became rampant, as we suddenly had a huge influx of MS13s supplying them. Houses are being broken into, and violent, armed robberies increased from almost none to hundreds. The plain, hard, cold fact is, when they catch someone doing these things, 99% of the time, it's an illegal Mexican. Our property taxes increased to pay for ESL courses in our schools, as well as the welfare , food stamps and free medical care and housing they get. Deport them and they slither right back. It's time to arm our border guards, allow them to shoot and actually ENFORCE our laws! Make it impossible to work or rent when they get here if they are not legal. Disbanding the 287g program was a HUGE MISTAKE. E-verify is a small step in the right direction. Our way of life, our peace and safety is being torn apart to provide cheap labour for Big Biz. Time for it to end!

If they worked as hard in their country as they do here maybe they wouldn't need to come. If they were as dedicated to making their country better as they are to crossing the border they would not need to pick tomatoes for pennies, and break our laws.

So you think it is ok to be a criminal as long as you work hard. No other country on this big ball in the sky allows people to come there without an invitation. Good old USA just come here have a little citizen and rake in the goodies. What a country. People like you should go to another country and work hard as well but only after you are invited. Right?

"Through a loophole in immigration law, illegal aliens can collect social security benefits."
      Free school
      Free healthcare
They don't pay taxes but they get the services which means they can keep all of the money they make unlike Americans.
Yea, they don't get any free lunches.

Exactly. Don't forget free medical coverage at any county hospital in the US. They can't turn away anyone. In Dallas we have more illegal babies delivered at Parkland Hospital than any other hospital in the US. Not cheap, and the baby get's a free pass to life in the States. Nothing against the kid, but the cost is astronomical!!!

If we want to extend ANY possibility of citizenship to tllegals, then the States and Fed govt s ought to also make sure ALL the Patels pay withholding on Income, social security, unemployment taxes, etc. No cheatin for relatives. And keep their thermostats on decent temperatures.

Overpopulation is a concern, yes its true there are flaws about illegals coming into this country, however lets not forget you wonderful people who are kicking them out and saying lets get rid of them. They do all those wonderful jobs you don't. Picking vegetables in a field, clean bathrooms, wash dishes, serve you, and get underpaid for it haha. The reason people hire them is because they know they can underpay them and they won't say anything. So when you start talking crap about them coming in and taking over, realize that you won't double over to clean the whole you crap in they will for 1 buck, because those people actually need money to survive they don't pitch a tent in protest or live on welfare, or decided unemployment is fun.

I am soooo tired of reading "doing jobs that we won't do". There is no job that people would refuse to do if they are hungry. If the jobs paid a decent wage most all Americans will do the job. However illegals will work for $4.00 – $5.00 an hour get paid "under the table." Pay no tax or fica then go to the welfare office get free food stamps, free medical, free housing for their little USA citizen they make sure they have one every 9 months. Then bring all the family across the border to bask in the riches paid for by the nice Americans. People like you are what is wrong with our nation.

The main purpose of the boats is to try to stop the flow of drugs. (good luck with that) The best way to do that is to reduce or eliminate the demand. The drug cartels have tons of money to use to get the drugs into the U.S. These boats are window dressing and will have very little effect on their stated purpose. Makes the Texans feel good, though.
