Ex-L.A. detective found guilty in 1986 murder of romantic rival

A Los Angeles County jury found a retired police detective guilty of first-degree murder Thursday in the 1986 death of an alleged romantic rival who married the detective's college sweetheart.

Stephanie Ilene Lazarus, now 51 and retired after rising through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department, was accused of beating, biting and shooting to death Sherri Rasmussen, 29, in her townhouse in the suburban San Fernando Valley.

The judge scheduled sentencing for May 4. Lazarus faces 27 years to life in prison, prosecutors said.

1986? Wth took so long? Damn, another clasic case for a reason our judicial system needs reform. Well at least the victims family might get some closure, if thats even possible!

Whats sad is that a cop killed someone out of jealousy. What a poor reason. That cop lady had to have been a total loonytoon!

I wonder how she felt when she woke up on 5 June 2009 and went about her normal business only to be hit with an interrogation? I love how she stuttered and claimed to not know Sherri when the interview first started and then mentioned that they had a discussion over Mr. Ruetten. Those detectives had ice water in their veins when they brought her in there.

I went to high school with Sherri. She was a beautiful, sweet, talented girl. It was hard on her friends/family to lose her. I wonder if Stephanie thinks it was worth it to terrorize, beat, bite and kill such a sweet girl?
