Public assistance pulled from lottery winner

A Michigan woman who won the lottery but continued to receive food assistance from the state government has had her benefits pulled, officials said.

Amanda Clayton hit it big playing the Michigan Lottery. Like many winners, she used her $1 million prize to buy a new house.

But the Lincoln Park, Michigan, resident continued to receive money in another form - $200 a month in state food assistance, according to CNN Detroit affiliate WDIV.

Her story made headlines, and on Thursday, the state's Department of Human Services announced that she is no longer getting the benefits.

According to Michigan law, welfare recipients must report any changes in assets or income to the agency within 10 days.

The department "relies on clients being forthcoming about their actual financial status. If they are not, and continue to accept benefits, they may face criminal investigation and be required to pay back those benefits," Director Maura Corrigan said in a statement.

Superman, maybe you should just shake down the people that you save from collapsing bridges and the like. An imposed reward for services rendered. Then you'll have plenty of money.

"the dept relies on clients being forthcoming about their actual financial status"

well that isnt likely to get abused now is it?
I am sure the punishment is a $25 fine, then they keep giving out $200/month.

no mention of the fact that your tax dollars where spent gambling.the money spent on lottery tickets should have bought food and she should never have been recieving food stamps to begin with.JUST MAYBE THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE NEEDS TO LEAVE THE TAX PAYER ALONE AND START AUDITING WELFARE RECIPIENTS.i want every penny accounted tax dollars are being spent on gambling alcohol and drugs.THIS IS WHY SOCIALISM WILL NEVER WORK.

Maybe she wasn't spending the welfare money on lottery tickets. Maybe the lottery ticket money came from her drug dealer boyfriend, in exchange for s3xual favors. We don't know her situation.

She'll probably be back on assistance in a year anyway. We had a welfare recipient up here named Henry Squirrel who won $500K years ago. He burned through it in about 4 months and went back on welfare. Losers are losers. You can't change them by handing them more money. They need to change themselves.

@scottish mama they will find a way around that to.welfare recipients need to be audited every month.every penny should be accounted tax dollars bought that lottery ticket.the jackpot should be taken from her and redistributed to the taxpayer since obama wants to run his mouth about redistribution of wealth.

@hamsta: that's one of the stupidest things i've heard. hire a bunch of people to audit everyone once a month? that makes economic sense to you?

in florida, they drug test for benefits. it cut an insignificant amount of people, and florida is having to pay 50 bucks per test..

abuse is not as rampant as fear mongers would have us believe..

lee it is as rampant as you hear. We all know someone who abuses the system just because it has become the norm in America. Sad and pathetic how people have become dependent on the govt for their every need

Abuse of social welfare programmes is a given in any society. It needs to be addressed in earnest. This woman blatantly continued getting food stamps and deserves our contempt.

As for our tax dollars, they go many a ways unbeknownst to us the tax payers, We have long given up wanting to know where they go.

      I agree, sawhat.
If every social program were taken out of existance, the myriad of pork programs would still suck the life out of the tax-payer paychecks.
Special interest groups will still get their funding, and there would still be know accounting of where our tax dollars actually go...

All that being said, this woman is a cheat, and cheaters need to be punished...not the people who legitametely need these services.
