Military experts examine child's fingers found in trash bin

Six fingers from a child found in a Hawaii trash bin have been examined by experts at the military's Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command at Pearl Harbor, but there are no new leads in the case, CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now reports.

Robert Mann, director of the forensics academy at the military unit, said the fingers give investigators only scant information on where to take an investigation.

"It's not a complete hand. It's not a complete body. And so the less you have of an individual to try to identify or to work with, the harder our job is," Mann told Hawaii News Now.

A woman searching for recyclables found the fingers sealed in a zippered plastic storage bag inside a trash bin at a Honolulu housing complex more than a month ago, according to Honolulu police.

She said she originally mistook them for ginger root before determining they were fingers and turning them over to police.

Police sources earlier said the fingers were from a young girl, but Mann said the military lab was unable to determine a sex from the remains.

The lab was able to estimate an age range, he said.

"If it is a young girl, this one would be between maybe 2 and a half to 4 years old. If it's a boy then it would be somewhere between 3 and 5 years old," Mann told Hawaii News Now.

He also described the fingers as dry, leathery and not well preserved, according to the Hawaii News Now report.

Honolulu police were doing DNA tests, Hawaii News Now reported.

Well makes you wonder now, why is the *military* investigating and not the local police? Could it be they think it may be another brain traumatized soldier, bringin back some soveniers??

I thought about that too. But maybe the fingers were found in a military base? If that's the case, it would narrow down on where to search.

The military forensic lab that analyses remains from MIAs from the wars is the premier laboratory for such analysis. They are located on Oahu. Why not utilize the experts?

It says "the military," but what they mean is "NCIS Hawaii," which would get better reviews than "Hawaii 5-0."

It seems probable that with six digits having been amputated, one or more children have probably been maimed – and most likely, on purpose. I've seen and heard of these incidents before – maiming a child on purpose and then forcing them to go out and beg on the theory that being deformed, they will garner sympathy and hence, bigger donations. One does not want to think this sort of thing goes on in our nation; one does not like to think that any child is being hurt purposely – but we know that it happens all too often. I hope the full weight of the law comes down on those responsible!

Sadly, I think the little girl is already dead, and whoever did that was probably trying to dispose of the body parts at various places to make the investigation harder. The body is probably badly dismembered.

This is so strange and unnerving at the same time. There might be remains of a child somewhere or a poor child with missing fingers. I hope they find out who did this horrible crime!

    @? ? ?:
I would think because of the convenience of having a forensic lab already on the island, rather than having to send it to the mainland.
    The mlitary just runs it.

I'm holding back on an opinion until we know more....

When it comes to finger sizes of different genders, A female index finger is longer than their ring finger, and opposite for a male, in most cases. I'm sure they can tell which fingers they are measuring when it comes to index, middle, ring & pinky fingers. This is also a better way to tell if you're dealing with a tranny than looking at an adams apple which can be surgically altered a lot easier than a finger can be.
