Military experts examine child's fingers found in trash bin

Six fingers from a child found in a Hawaii trash bin have been examined by experts at the military's Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command at Pearl Harbor, but there are no new leads in the case, CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now reports.

Robert Mann, director of the forensics academy at the military unit, said the fingers give investigators only scant information on where to take an investigation.

"It's not a complete hand. It's not a complete body. And so the less you have of an individual to try to identify or to work with, the harder our job is," Mann told Hawaii News Now.

A woman searching for recyclables found the fingers sealed in a zippered plastic storage bag inside a trash bin at a Honolulu housing complex more than a month ago, according to Honolulu police.

She said she originally mistook them for ginger root before determining they were fingers and turning them over to police.

Police sources earlier said the fingers were from a young girl, but Mann said the military lab was unable to determine a sex from the remains.

The lab was able to estimate an age range, he said.

"If it is a young girl, this one would be between maybe 2 and a half to 4 years old. If it's a boy then it would be somewhere between 3 and 5 years old," Mann told Hawaii News Now.

He also described the fingers as dry, leathery and not well preserved, according to the Hawaii News Now report.

Honolulu police were doing DNA tests, Hawaii News Now reported.

Those of you making jokes about this are as sick as the individual who amputated those fingers.

Anytime I hear or see the words "Military "and "Expert" used together in a sentence, I shudder. Same goes for the words "reliable" and "sources"!

Here's an unsettling thought. The only reason these fingers were found is because someone was picking through the dumpster. How often do things like this happen, and no one ever finds out?

You think maybe that's why they're referring to it as a mystery?

I'm sure that lady just passed over the rest of the body in that trash bin. She probably thought "that old head of lettuce that could also be a human head is just something I don't need to recycle". I mean, how could you POSSIBLY think human fingers were ginger root? Seriously.

Makes you wonder how many bodies get sent to the landfill every year that are never found.

More then you might think. That's how Dahmer disposed of his first victim (after a little bit of "processing").

Even when police are sure a body was disposed of to a landfill, finding any remains for a prosecution case is next to impossible. In Phoenix, police are trying to find the remains of a little girl who was most likely murdered by her mother, but they are looking in a landfill several months after the fact. No luck so far, but at least they haven't given up. Without the little girl there isn't much to prosecute the mom. Wouldn't be surprised by what (or whom) they do find.

retphxfire – Thats pretty upsetting. And it would be nearly impossable to locate a body part after it is decomposing in a landfill, with the entire place smelling like rotting things.

If you have ever seen fresh ginger root, not the big sized ones they sell in grocery stores but little starts of the plant you would see that it could easily happen.

So you've never seen ginger root. The fingers could have swelled up. It is similar in color and shape. Do you think she was making it up?

So sad that you have never seen fresh ginger. You can either take a walk to the supermarket and check it out or if you can't disengage from the keyboard, just google ginger root and check out the images.

Have they checked the belly of the homeless woman? Clearly, she ate the baby and didn't like the fingers.

Where in the story does it say the woman was homeless? The area that the fingers were found is a housing project. It's not uncommon for people...especially people who live in these housing projects to collect cans to recycle to earn some extra income. It's unfortunate there are so many useless ignorant comments on here and people who think their seem to forget that this story is very real...and affects someone and their community.
