Military experts examine child's fingers found in trash bin

Six fingers from a child found in a Hawaii trash bin have been examined by experts at the military's Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command at Pearl Harbor, but there are no new leads in the case, CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now reports.

Robert Mann, director of the forensics academy at the military unit, said the fingers give investigators only scant information on where to take an investigation.

"It's not a complete hand. It's not a complete body. And so the less you have of an individual to try to identify or to work with, the harder our job is," Mann told Hawaii News Now.

A woman searching for recyclables found the fingers sealed in a zippered plastic storage bag inside a trash bin at a Honolulu housing complex more than a month ago, according to Honolulu police.

She said she originally mistook them for ginger root before determining they were fingers and turning them over to police.

Police sources earlier said the fingers were from a young girl, but Mann said the military lab was unable to determine a sex from the remains.

The lab was able to estimate an age range, he said.

"If it is a young girl, this one would be between maybe 2 and a half to 4 years old. If it's a boy then it would be somewhere between 3 and 5 years old," Mann told Hawaii News Now.

He also described the fingers as dry, leathery and not well preserved, according to the Hawaii News Now report.

Honolulu police were doing DNA tests, Hawaii News Now reported.

has it accured to anyone that they may have been amputated a long time ago due to a desease?yes it is a gross idea to keep them! but maybe even the person that had to have it done got tired of looking at them or maybe learned to live with it so got rid of them.Things like that happened long ago before we got all this great medicine. grandma15

She probably went to see if it could still be eaten. Nobody would expect to find kid fingers in the trash.

The previous blog on this story stated the following
"The fingers are those of a girl, 2½ to 4 years old, CNN affiliate KHON-TV reported, citing police sources. Six fingers were recovered, according to the report."

      It sure did.
      However, THIS one states,
"Police sources earlier said the fingers were from a young girl, but Mann said the military lab was unable to determine a s*e*x from the remains."

      The police sources were wrong.

It will be never when law enforcement and the HI courts do anything, find anything or even start to look. If they are not on the take, then the motivation is gone. Cults abound, as does child abuse in all forms. Just ask the millions of tourists who have been swindled and absolutely nothing was done. If there is discrimination in the states, try being white; or better yet, white and female in HI. My friends and I learned a lot in a week's trip there. Just watch the lack of information and interest on this case as time passes.

From the condescending tone of your message, I'd bet you get negative reception regardless of you travel. Ya might want to work on that.

@shallow guys - wrong on both accounts. But do a little research and you might find that all of my comments are FACTS. Of course, that will take a little work past cut-down opinions.
