Military experts examine child's fingers found in trash bin

Six fingers from a child found in a Hawaii trash bin have been examined by experts at the military's Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command at Pearl Harbor, but there are no new leads in the case, CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now reports.

Robert Mann, director of the forensics academy at the military unit, said the fingers give investigators only scant information on where to take an investigation.

"It's not a complete hand. It's not a complete body. And so the less you have of an individual to try to identify or to work with, the harder our job is," Mann told Hawaii News Now.

A woman searching for recyclables found the fingers sealed in a zippered plastic storage bag inside a trash bin at a Honolulu housing complex more than a month ago, according to Honolulu police.

She said she originally mistook them for ginger root before determining they were fingers and turning them over to police.

Police sources earlier said the fingers were from a young girl, but Mann said the military lab was unable to determine a sex from the remains.

The lab was able to estimate an age range, he said.

"If it is a young girl, this one would be between maybe 2 and a half to 4 years old. If it's a boy then it would be somewhere between 3 and 5 years old," Mann told Hawaii News Now.

He also described the fingers as dry, leathery and not well preserved, according to the Hawaii News Now report.

Honolulu police were doing DNA tests, Hawaii News Now reported.

They should start looking for kids missing at least 6 fingers.

Seriously this is very sad and I hope they find whoever did this.

Tomorrow are they going to involve the CIA? Think the White House will order to send them to Walter Reed Hospital for examination? Maybe we can have them put on dry ice and set up an itinerary for morgues and hospitals all across the country to look at 'em huh.

Somebody probably was teaching a kid how to whack pineapples with a machete, and had an accident.

@Rags If you had a life even remotely close to Nancy Grace, you'd understand. She has had a really hard and depressing life and I admire her for what she did, and is doing.

find finger prints on the plastic bag? Figure out where the plastic bag is sold? Figure out the race of the fingers? Figure out any missing children around that time? was there any other particles in the bag? How busy was the place of the trash can? Any cars or people went by? Why are those fingers in a plastic bag? Why are the fingers in a trash can? Any other body parts in near by trash cans? Is there a possibility that the criminal is local? How's the bone density of the kid like (nutrition wise)? Could it be possible that the person cut the fingers and person stored those fingers in the plastic bag different people? What's the reason for finger cutting? What's the reason for fingers storing?

The HI police and military are not going to answer those questions, nor investigate them. The sooner they get out of the media and ignore what they could do, the happier they will be.

Good points. Either this article was written by an imbecile or it is disinformation designed to downplay interest in this missing child's case. Either way, CNN is failing its duty to the victim's family and to the public. The question is, why do we let the media get away with this?

It's safe to assume they're considering all that. Just because it's not reported in a little CNN article doesn't mean it's not happening. It's also quite possible that they're holding back info to protect their investigation, which is common.

The article said the fingers were found in a dumpster that was at a Honolulu housing complex... if the military is involved then the housing complex was surely military housing. This is so sad.

I live in Kaneohe, HI and work for the government at Pearl. It was a civilian housing complex. The reason the military is involved is because the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command at Pearl Harbor are experts in remains identification. They are the folks responsible for identifying the remains of our military from the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Hope this helps. Tradegy either way.
