Police: Suspect shot after stabbing four in Columbus, Ohio

[Updated at 7:32 p.m. ET] Three people were in critical condition and one in stable condition after a stabbing incident Wednesday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, that ended with the suspect being shot by police, Columbus authorities said.

The attack began inside a downtown building that houses Miami-Jacobs Career College, said Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

The stabbing victims in critical condition underwent surgery at Grant Medical Center, while the one with less serious injuries was taken to Mount Carmel West hospital, officials said. The suspect was in critical condition at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center, Weiner said.

"I was here within probably a minute, minute and a half of it being dispatched, and I can tell you it was a chaotic scene," said Columbus Police Chief Stephen Gammill.

[Initial post, 2:26 p.m. ET] A man stabbed four people in downtown Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday before he was shot by police, Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said.

Three of the stabbing victims are in critical condition, as is the suspect.

Police said suspect's motive is unclear.

A female officer who arrived on the scene confronted the suspect who had a knife in each hand, Columbus Police Department Sgt. Jim Gilbert told CNN affiliate WCMH.

Gilbert told WCMH that the officer confronted the suspect, who approached her in a violent manner. She then drew her weapon and fired several shots, Gilbert told WCMH.

Dantheman – Ever try to stab yourself by accident? Or ever heard of two kids finding a knife and accidentally stabbing each other. Not me...

Obviously you have a thing for guns. But to equate the dangers of mishandling a knife to a gun is rather silly. Dont ya think?

if everyone had a gun, this guy wouldn't have made it past his first reload. Point is, he was deranged. Not like it is illegal to own a gun. Not like criminals can't get guns. This whackjob used a knife because he was a whackjob. No difference if he'd driven his car on the sidewalk and killed 4 people intentionally. People who want to kill, will. Don't take away my ability to defend my family as slim as it might be by saying gun control is the answer to all the world's ills. If you take away guns from everyone (magically) then people will just start beating people to death with pipe wrenches.

wcb2009–I accidentally cut myself the other day while preparing dinner. Recently here a 12 year old stabbed a friend to death. So much for your not hearing about the dangers of mishandling knives.

A police officer who acted heroically and with appropriate force. Congratulations. And it was a woman! If the right wing gets its way women will be out of the work force and home in the kitchen with six kids and no health care.

Hey Sharkfisher, under Ayatolla Santorum, he would create the very nanny state, like you like to call it and despise. Can you imagine how many unwanted babies will result from no contraception, not to mention the cost of all of these unwed, uninsured women having babies and then the social cost to either house them in orphanages or having hundreds of thousands or even millions of single mothers who can't afford health care, food and can't get jobs because they have a litter of kids at home and need public assistance?

Hey, Right–what makes you think there would be any public assistance available?

It's high time people started taking personal responsibility for their actions and stop relying upon the taxpayers to bail them out.

You guys are seriously misinformed. The current debate has nothing to do with taxpayers money. Women just want to have health insurance cover birth control just the same way it covers viagra, vasectomies, gunshot wounds, stab wounds, etc.

Remember what N.Y.C. Mayor David Dinkins said when the mugger stabbed the Utah teen ager to death in the subway station? " This is why we have to have tougher GUN control laws" People who want kill will kill with what ever weapon is at hand. Gun,knife, axe, club or rope.I guess we'll have to outlaw them all.

Rather tiresome to see one guy posting the same gun control / knife control comments over and over and over agian, using different names and slightly different wording. Yes, we can all tell it's just one person, so stop the cherade. Saying the same thing a bunch of times doesn't make it true. The fact is, if this guy had a gun, it would have been a lot worse.

Scary that people think firing a gun requires some degree of intelligence. Using a knife requires close combat ability.

very true...this is a strong argument in favour of tighter gun control and gun registration. No firearms should be permitted within urban limits, and gun owners would need to sign them in and out of secured facilities.
