Police: Suspect shot after stabbing four in Columbus, Ohio

[Updated at 7:32 p.m. ET] Three people were in critical condition and one in stable condition after a stabbing incident Wednesday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, that ended with the suspect being shot by police, Columbus authorities said.

The attack began inside a downtown building that houses Miami-Jacobs Career College, said Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

The stabbing victims in critical condition underwent surgery at Grant Medical Center, while the one with less serious injuries was taken to Mount Carmel West hospital, officials said. The suspect was in critical condition at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center, Weiner said.

"I was here within probably a minute, minute and a half of it being dispatched, and I can tell you it was a chaotic scene," said Columbus Police Chief Stephen Gammill.

[Initial post, 2:26 p.m. ET] A man stabbed four people in downtown Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday before he was shot by police, Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said.

Three of the stabbing victims are in critical condition, as is the suspect.

Police said suspect's motive is unclear.

A female officer who arrived on the scene confronted the suspect who had a knife in each hand, Columbus Police Department Sgt. Jim Gilbert told CNN affiliate WCMH.

Gilbert told WCMH that the officer confronted the suspect, who approached her in a violent manner. She then drew her weapon and fired several shots, Gilbert told WCMH.

Or, imagine what would have happened if the first would be victim had been armed and been able to shoot the attacker.

And they shoot and miss and kill someone. Many of you have this fantasy that people armed with guns thwart crimes, when quite often they make them much worse. It's not like the movies

Too bad the first victim didn't have a gun(and know how to use it).

Because you draw your weapon any time someone gets close enough to stab you? If the guy had been concealing the knife until within striking range - something really easy to do - having a gun isn't going to help. In fact, more than likely, you just turned a killer armed with a knife into a killer armed with a gun.

@susanna According to the story the guy was dual wielding knives. Doubt he had them concealed when he approached victim #1

The conseal carry crowd doesn't know that there is another facet to having that responsibility...you better be ready to shoot and kill someone if you draw your gun. A whole lot of civilians think they are tough guys until they have to do it.

It's just like on TV or in the movies, right? Everyone gets up after the shooting and stabbing and goes home. Noone is really hurt when you shoot or stab them. That is just a thing they do for the newspapers, right?

We get it trolls...quit believing that liberals want to take away your precious guns. The only place i have ever heard that is from the NRA or Faux News or from the guy on this blog who keeps actng like he a different poster. I am as liberal as they get and I have a gun. I have been everywhere in the country and I have never heard one politician say they want to take away your guns. The only problem I have with the gun lobby is that what regular citizen needs an assault rifle or machine gun or rocket launcher? Not every gun is equal.

And when everyone has guns, there will be dead bodies on the interstate, in the restaurant lobbies and bars. I have read the news for decades and do you know how many times I hear about a gun toting civilian stopping a crime because they had a gun? Maybe twice. Now, how many times have I heard someone misfiring a gun, or a kid blowing his head off after finding daddy's gun? More than twice.

Why, yes, today there is a story from Washington where a 5 year old grabbed a gun from in the car and shot himself to death. It was the third self-inflicted child death in Washington in the past week or so. Yeah gun lobby!!! You are all right.

Hey, pm – define "assault rifle". Now define "Machine Gun". And please tell me when a rocket launcher was used outside of a military engagement to harm people.

Can't wait to see how you answer these questions. IF you answer them. I've found the quickest way to shut the ignorant ones up is to press them to support their arguments. You mentioned these terms. Now show your understanding of them.

We do have a conseal carry law in Ohio. He was obviously deranged and didn't have a gun, so he grabbed a knife. he was trying for suicide by cop...There are many deadly wepons out there other than guns, but they were all designed for a different purpose. The gun was designed for one thing only and that was to kill something.

Wow, two types of weapons and nobody understands how to properly use them. With a knife, i can understand multiple stab wounds and not killing your target. However, the officer had a gun, a close range subject and fired multiple times and still could not kill the target. Oh shoot, i missed the part where the officer was a female. My bad! Disregard my statement.

In the military we are different levels of deadly force. Obviously the last resort is to kill the individual. Could be that this officer was trying to wound the individual in order to stop the violence, instead of killing him. That's just my opinion though.

USING a knife requires some type of close combat ability.

if this guy had a rifle, about 30 people will be dead now.

    March 14, 2012 at 4:05 pm | Report abuse |
    • iankearl

That would depend entirely on the rifle, magazine capacity (in the case of semi and fully automatic weapons), type of ammunition used, and the number and location of innocent people on the street. For instance, a bolt action rifle would take more time have a round inserted into the chamber that a semi-automatic. Additionally, bolt action rifles have a more limited ammo capacity than semi and fully automatic weapons. Also higher caliber and armor piercing rounds have a better chance of going through one target and hitting another target than hollow points.

Well let's try this scenario. Let's pretend for a moment guns are NOT commonplace, that it is extremely difficult to get a gun. We all sit around lamenting how dangerous the world is and how crazy people are whenever things like this happen. Then someone speaks up and says "Hey, why don't we make sure everyone has a GUN!" Don't you all see how insane that is?

Can't you leftist LOSERS stay ON topic for once in your life? This was about a knife-weilding maniac, NOT birth control.
P.S.; all you crybabies who worry about handguns. Handguns are dangerous because they can be conceiled, but the average goon and a handgun are not nearly as dangerous as someone with a rifle or shotgun. Hitting a target with a handgun is difficult, hitting a moving target for a novice is nearly impossible.

I have a gun. I've been to the range and I didn't think it was that hard to hit the target. To hit the same spot more than once was hard (didn't do it), but to hit a human from inside 20 feet would be easy. My target was only about 2X3 feet and hanging in space. i am as liberal as it gets and I have a gun and am trained to use it. Gun control is different than taking them away. I just don't see the need for civilians having assault rifles and automatic weapons. Come into my house unwanted and uninvited and you'll get what is coming.

"wow"–you're a liar. What's more, you know you're a liar. Liberal politicians for decades have banned gun ownership in many large cities. States like California currently ban a slew of rifles and make owners register the rest.

wow–if you're only able to hit a target only once within 20 feet, when an intruder comes to your house uninvited you'd better be packing something with greater stopping power than 9mm, otherwise that gun you're go proud of will be more useless than a knife!

yakobi. i didn't say that i only hit the target once. I said i couldn't hit the same spot twice. My groupings got better the more i practiced. One more thing. i stand corrected on my earlier comment. Yes, politicians have limited and even banned guns in localities and communities. I was trying to say that no poilitician in 20 years has advocated reversing he 2nd amendment banning all guns...sorry, i forgot about the hype-gun people who pick apart your every word.

      2nd Amendment:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

wow–What "pick apart your words"? You made a flat out wrong statement: "No one is trying to take away your guns...it is in you rimagination [sic]." Now you qualify your hyperbole to mean reversing the 2nd amendment. So, when the SCOTUS has to overturn gun bans based on the 2nd Amendment, you still stand behind this statement?
