Police: Suspect shot after stabbing four in Columbus, Ohio

[Updated at 7:32 p.m. ET] Three people were in critical condition and one in stable condition after a stabbing incident Wednesday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, that ended with the suspect being shot by police, Columbus authorities said.

The attack began inside a downtown building that houses Miami-Jacobs Career College, said Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

The stabbing victims in critical condition underwent surgery at Grant Medical Center, while the one with less serious injuries was taken to Mount Carmel West hospital, officials said. The suspect was in critical condition at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center, Weiner said.

"I was here within probably a minute, minute and a half of it being dispatched, and I can tell you it was a chaotic scene," said Columbus Police Chief Stephen Gammill.

[Initial post, 2:26 p.m. ET] A man stabbed four people in downtown Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday before he was shot by police, Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said.

Three of the stabbing victims are in critical condition, as is the suspect.

Police said suspect's motive is unclear.

A female officer who arrived on the scene confronted the suspect who had a knife in each hand, Columbus Police Department Sgt. Jim Gilbert told CNN affiliate WCMH.

Gilbert told WCMH that the officer confronted the suspect, who approached her in a violent manner. She then drew her weapon and fired several shots, Gilbert told WCMH.

I don't believe in placing blame on innocent people..........
BUT IN THIS CASE........YOU HIT IT....This economy, high unemployment, deficit, housing issues, healthcare, etc all started after GEORGE W BUSH started his two WARS......the largest amount of the deficit is on "defense" spending.
YES people are hard up and do stupid -no excuse acts, but if people had jobs, etc. stress would be much lower.

Actually, ZoeyJ, since you've apparently forgotten, al Qaeda started the war when they attacked us on 9/11/01 (and many times prior to that). GWB's courage merely changed it from a one-sided affair.

Ban knives!!! I know they are used to cut things and are used for other purposes but gosh darnit they are so dangerous. What it a child opens a drawer and grabs an unsecured knife? At the very least the should make a law that grinds the cutting edge flat and weld blocks on the tip so tragedies like this will never happen again.

He just wanted to get his knives sharpened at the same hardware store he'd used for 20 years but they went out of business so he was holding them out with shrugged shoulders and a "What am I supposed to do now?" look and they shot him????

Knives have started murdering people in cold blood! Lock them away somewhere safe (perhaps a drawer) before they murder your whole family in their sleep!

Wow, all those concealed carry permits around Ohio and a 4:1 to gun:individual ratio. Not one gun toting individual came to the rescue. Surprise.

You see...there's a couple more people in critical condition because the liberal left convinces them, even though our state does have conceal and carry law to help citizens protect themselves, that it would be unsafe for them to have a handgun. I wouldn't of wasted my time with 4 shots of a 9mm to let the guy live. I'm sorry Sgt. Weiner I WOULD OF USED A 50cal. RIFLE, PLACED RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES.

You make no sense whatsoever. As a ccw holder, I take offense to your idiotic and juvenile response to this. First... You'd carry a .50 caliber rifle concealed? I think not. 2nd, as Travis stated, you'd hurt a lot more people with the overkill factor. 3rd, its fanatical m0r0ns like you posting that gives concealed carry a bad name. Enough with the macho talk, get training and get REAL.

What about the arguement that it is not the guns because people can use a knife, etc. Well this story is the perfect example of why guns ARE the issue. Three people are in critical condition, but are not dead! If this guy had semi-automatic hand guns then they would most likely be dead, along with a lot more people. Also, where was the private citizens who are allowed to carry guns in this state? How did that deter this criminal, or even stop him? It didn't! It took the police to handle it.

I love your post. If the person had guns it would have been worse? A trained police officer fired several shots and the suspect is in critical condition. The whacko that stabbed 4 people put them in critical condition.

Guns have nothing to do with this – it has to do with the idiot who decided to run out and hurt people. Now go do something constructive.

a good answer to teh automatic NRA whine, "If you control guns, people will jsut use knives, or chair-legs, or broken bottles..." all of which are a lot less likely to cause fatalities, and thus less attractive to truly muderous types.
