Guilty verdict in Rutgers webcam spying case

[Updated at 8:01 p.m. ET] A former Rutgers University student accused of spying on and intimidating his gay roommate by use of a hidden webcam was found guilty Friday of all counts - including invasion of privacy and the more severe charges of bias intimidation - in a case that thrust cyberbullying into the national spotlight.

Dharun Ravi, 20, was also found guilty of witness tampering, hindering apprehension and tampering with physical evidence, and could now face up to 10 years in jail and deportation to his native India.

Sentencing has been set for May 21.

The New Jersey jury was confronted with a series of questions on each charge after it asked for clarification on what constituted bias intimidation. Though it found Ravi not guilty on several questions within the verdict sheet, because he was found guilty on at least one question on each main count, Ravi was convicted on all charges and could now face the maximum penalty.

  1. Suicide Watch

Ravi did not push him off the bridge. Should there be a suicide watch for the other guy in the video, or does he seem to be coping with it like a normal person?

Where were the parents of the young men involved? Moreover, where was the community guidance?
Where was the village that it takes?
By some chance, the roommates were finding their own ways through a difficult set of years.
Away from home, they had no compass.
That's just one question raised by this mess.
    The mess is big.

@Jif....i think it speaks to what a good part of our society has become.
Too many of the younger folks were not taught how to deal with emotional issues.

Great news he was convicted. Send him to prison for 10 years and then deport this lowlife back to India.

Calling an Indian immigrant an Indian lowlife could get you the same fate. If you live in NJ and he commits suicide after.

I am a resident of Middlesex County, NJ where this took place and has been unfolding.

    1) I don't think this boy truly was acting in a bigoted spirit, but rather of young stupidity combined with a splash of ignorance. The real problem here will be the well intended, but dreadfully constraining to reality, mandatory sentencing which I believe does not work as intended and should be scrapped in most criminal offenses and have recommended sentences that we entrust to the presiding judges who see a whole case from start to finish make the final decision.

    2) What is it problem with him being Indian-American on this blog? I am a white man and living in this part of New Jersey, living day-to-day with Indian-Americans and Indian immigrants is normal and accepted life here. We work, live, shop and eat at the same places and together and call a number of Indian-American's my friends. I can tell you like people from anywhere, some people are great, some your friends, some are jerks, some are smart and some are stupid. It is the same as anywhere, just a different ethnicity as their background.

  13. High Hopes

This case became a case only because of the publicity it received. Imo the kid made a mistake, apologized for it and was willing to continue being his roommate, but that wasn't enough. What more could he have done?

And the dead one, who really caused the most pain for everyone? All he had to say was, "I'm jumping off the GW bridge. Sorry."???

I guess sorry, just, isn't enough!

    Sorry...
