Rallies, 'scream-outs' planned coast to coast in support of Trayvon Martin

A month ago Monday, Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Florida teen, died at the hands of a neighborhood watch volunteer, stirring outrage and protests nationwide.

The African-American teen was fatally shot on February 26 as he walked to his father's fiancée's house in Sanford after a trip to a convenience store. Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman told police he shot the teen in self defense, and he has not been charged.

The 17-year-old's death fueled calls for justice nationwide that continue to grow daily. On Monday rallies are planned from coast to coast to pay tribute to Martin or bring attention to the issue. Below is a list of some of the largest planned rallies.

iReport: Why you marched for Trayvon

"This event is open to the public and all university students in Pittsburgh. We seek justice, not only for his family and friends, but in honor of all racially profiled, stereotyped, and unjustly convicted citizens of this country, whose voices have long been suppressed and whose lives are often subject to overt discrimination and criminalization in a biased justice system. We are Trayvon."

3:00 p.m. ET: "Emergency Scream-out"

The is touted as a "scream-out" because the organizers say at this point speaking out is not enough.

The rally will take place at the Hall of Justice in San Francisco.

TSU student G. Christopher Cutkelvin told CNN affiliate KTRK that the outrage around campus surrounds wanting to know the truth.

"You know it's the pursuit of justice," Cutkelvin said. "It's not about color, it's not about race. It's the simple fact that, you know a situation happened, and the truth hasn't been told."

The event is expected to be attended by "Atlanta residents, student activists from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Georgia State University, and other local schools; along with various celebrities, public officials, clergy and members of the local NAACP, National Action Network, Black Law Students' Association, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Concerned Black Clergy of Atlanta, the Occupy movement, and other local, regional and state-wide organizations," according to the release.

6:30 p.m. ET: Trayvon Martin candlelight vigil

Location: Love Park; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

6:30 p.m. ET:  Million Hoodie March for Trayvon Martin

Location: Fountain Stage in the Iowa City Ped Mall; Iowa City, Iowa

A rally is planned to show support for Trayvon Martin and will include a moment of silence, as well as those speaking out on their feelings and sharing their own experiences.

"A black person in a hoodie isn't automatically 'suspicious,'" leaders of the event say. "Let's put an end to racial profiling! Trayvon was walking home from buying Skittles at the local store, so we encourage you to bring some Skittles with you as well!"

7:00 p.m. ET: Justice & Peace Rally

Trayvon Martin didn't wake up in the morning wanting to kill somebody, George Zimmerman woke up wanting to.

  3. how many?

How many hundreds of American teenagers have been murdered since this one? There is one and ONLY one reason why you gawker blockers are rubbernecking this case: he was specified to be a "black" kid. If it just said "kid" even a hundred times, you racists would drive on by without even noticing.

      @How many...
Do you how many black babies are aborted every single day in the world (here and Africa)?

Do you understand the real problem?

Human life has no value. Black aborted children are considered garbage in our society. You get it now?

So if Black women abort black babies – do you want the rest of us to believe you really care about this 17 year old young man or any other black child killed on our streets?

Reality, the hearts and minds of the black community has to change how they view life and when it starts. Save the unborn...

We love all the kids – in the womb and outside of the womb.

      Do you?

Start over, clean your house first, then come back...

We will still be here. Waiting for you to take the first step of change.

The New HOPE AND CHANGE message for 2012.

Save all – not just the few....

Do you pay special attention to murder cases involving the few rather than the many? Do your eyes perk-up when you hear it was a "black", but if the skin color is not identified, you go 'ho-hum' and hardly notice, let alone examine for weeks on end? Then you might have what it takes to become the next great leader to fan the flames of racism and keep them from dying out on their own.

U.S. Supreme Court only review a few cases out of thousands they received every year. You racists out there cannot discredit this incident because there are thousands of others cases out there where blacks were killing white and vice versa. If rich people like me are willing to dump money and publicize this incident, give me credit. If you find another case you want to promote your cause, you're more than welcome to. Good luck getting 2 million supporters.

      @ aka M Vick

Are you outraged about the number of black women going to abortion clinics everyday and having their unborn (Live) child murdered so they can say the have the right to do so based upon the decision of the Supreme Court?

Don't blast anyone not of your race and think we are so stupid to think gang violence is the only cause of black children being killed or injured. Or, to even consider we hurt too, when a white child is mudered by anyone.

What makes any race life more special?

You cry for equality or special treatment?

When you love the unborn, come back and ask us to stand with you.

Until then... Cry out for justice... But, no one will be listening...

    REMEMBRANCES OF GUILT-MAKINGS PAST
Well, I say that it's a sad day in Hell when a perfectly innocent, casually dressed young man–nay, lad–can't walk down the street to visit his future mother-in-law without having some hate-filled, white Hispanic man, who woke up that morning with the intention of killing an African-American child, chase him down and shoot him dead for no reason other than his hooded sweatshirt. It's a manifestation of the selfish, Ayn Rand worshipping, corporate greed in which magnolia-white Mayflower-Americans revel as they live in splendour off the backs of the worker and the racially downtrodden of our pathetic excuse for a society!
If that's what it has come to, then just God help us!
God help us, one and all!

I think Zimmerman is a slightly moronic, wanna-be cop and someone of authority in the community should have recognized that fact before he killed an innocent young man. This is a terrible, senseless tragedy. Having said that, I just wish the whole country and celebrities/pastors/politicians would be just this outraged everytime a murder is committed.

Why is this one particular shooting such a big deal. People get shot and killed every day they should have as much consideration as anyone else. Just a few months ago a young black man was gunned down in a convenient store parking lot by a driveby . How many people heard about that? Not to long before that one was shot and killed two blocks from there over a girl. Still no president. Why do only certain news articles mention the shooter had a broken nose and a gash in the back of his head. did the president those articles?

      What?
Zimmerman had a broken nose and a gash in the back of his head?
In that case, it would appear as if someone–perhaps Martin–came up side his head.
However, that would be impossible, or quite difficult, for Martin to do, if Zimmerman had already shot him in the back.

Jim: U.S. Supreme Court reviews a few cases out of thousands it receives. Just because the court is very selective doesn't mean that the cases it selected was invalid. You want Obama to care about other murder cases? Who do you think you are? Obama chooses what he wants to speak to public about. And you really think a news station should fill up the entire 30 minutes of news on black murdering white that happened during that day? You do not run the news station. When you do own a newspaper or newstation, then you can broadcast all the black murdering white cases you want all day and all night.
