Syria accepts peace plan, U.N. official says

The Syrian government has accepted U.N. envoy Kofi Annan's plan to forge peace and end violence, Annan's spokesman said on Tuesday.

Annan has offered Syria a six-point plan - supported by the U.N. Security Council - as a way to halt the violence.

The proposal seeks to stop the violence and the killing, give access to humanitarian agencies, release detainees, and start an inclusive political dialogue to address the legitimate aspirations and concerns of the Syrian people, according to a U.N. statement.

Wow, this news is shocking. I agree with many of you though, where in this plan does it call for Assad to somehow pay or be held accountable for his actions? I give Kofi credit at least as he seems to be able to at least open up a dialogue with many of these countries when chaos breaks out.

    Assad is a liar!

Have any of you had the opportunity to read his e-mails that were published in a CNN article about a week ago? Assad is nothing more than a puppet with Iran pulling his strings. He's their only true ally and they above all nations in the Middle East call for death to Israel.

The Devil is at their door step, just waiting for that call

Annon hears what he wants to hear and Assad is, just, biding time.

    Blah, Blah, Blah

Talk is cheap... and he's done nothing in good faith. Can't wait for the world to see how few prisoners actually lived through their torture... and to insist that anyone wishing to leave the country must first complete their commitment to serve in his army, leads me to believe that he plans to escalate his armed forces. Gearing up for war, are you, Assad?

    Keep talking... we're listening!

@High Hopes. Most of Iran's population hates their leaders. Virtually ALL young Iranians do. They wish to be free to party and free to enjoy what American's look-at as 'cheap innocent fun' without going to prison for it. Iran will fall without a drop of blood being spilled. (you heard it here first, though i've said it a dozen times. Venezuela? Bloody. Very bloody. Bloodier than Iraq)

@philip: you never cease to amaze me. i know a few iranians here, but you know most iranians there.. impressive..

you are aware they've tried to protest their way to a better life before, right? only to be squashed..? nothing about iran will ever be bloodless.
