A collection of public documents in Trayvon Martin shooting

[Updated April 12] Police and other officials in Sanford, Florida, have released a number of documents relating to the investigation of the February 26 shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin and the arrest of George Zimmerman on a charge of second-degree murder. In this post, we’ve collected some of the documents that show what police initially found at the scene, what authorities have told the public about the case, and other official documents.

Martin, a black 17-year-old, was unarmed when he was shot to death by Zimmerman, a Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer, as Martin was walking back to the house of his father's fiancee in Sanford.

Zimmerman had called police to report a suspicious person and said he was following Martin, despite being told by a dispatcher he didn't need to do so. He says he killed Martin in self-defense after the teen attacked him in the gated community. Zimmerman was questioned but not charged, police said, because they lacked evidence to contradict his account.

The case has sparked a national debate about, among other things, race and self-defense laws. Between Zimmerman’s account to police, tapes of 911 calls and accounts from witnesses and others, much is in dispute. (See CNN’s breakdown of what witnesses say happened.)

The initial police reports

Sanford police have released initial reports from the officers who first responded to the shooting scene on February 26. The reports detail what the officers saw when they arrived, officers’ attempts to resuscitate Martin, and a very brief account from Zimmerman. They do not include statements from other witnesses or any investigative information beyond the officers’ initial observations.

The initial police reports describe the case as "homicide/negligent" and "manslaughter/unnecessary killing to prevent unlawful act." City officials have said that all reports need descriptions to help track types of incidents.

“This code does not indicate a formal charge that will be lodged against an alleged offender,” the city said in a news release on Tuesday. “It is used for internal processing and to type cases.”

Citing multiple sources, ABC News reported Wednesday that the lead investigator in the case recommended that Zimmerman be charged with manslaughter after the shooting, but the state attorney's office determined that there was not enough evidence to lead to a conviction.

February 27 letter to neighborhood

In this letter to residents of the neighborhood where Martin was shot, the Sanford Police Department informs the residents of the fatal shooting and gives a brief description of the incident. The letter is dated February 27, the day after the shooting.

It also tells residents that an investigation was being conducted and that the department would hold a community meeting.

Answers from police chief

On March 21, with national public interest in the case rising, the Sanford city manager released a letter in which the city police chief answered what he said were frequently asked questions about the shooting.

The letter addresses issues such as why Zimmerman was not arrested and why he was armed. It also answers why the city Police Department hasn't released 911 tapes, though readers should be aware the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office had done so.

Those tapes now can be heard on the city’s website.

City: Newspaper's report on Zimmerman’s account consistent with inquiry

More than a month after the shooting, the Orlando Sentinel, citing “authorities” as its source of information, reported that Zimmerman told police that he had lost sight of Martin after trying to follow him and that he was returning to his vehicle when Martin confronted him.

The Sentinel also reported that Zimmerman claimed to police that Martin attacked him before he shot Martin.

On Monday, the city of Sanford released a statement in which it condemned what it called "unauthorized leaks," but confirmed that the newspaper account "is consistent with the information provided to the State Attorney's office by the Police Department."

Affidavit: Zimmerman 'profiled' Martin

In an affidavit of probable cause, a Florida investigator says that the neighborhood watch volunteer "profiled" the victim, Martin, and disregarded a police dispatcher's request that he await the arrival of police.

Zimmermann arrested and booked

On April 11, Zimmerman turned himself in to authorities in Florida. He was was transported that evening to the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, charged with second-degree murder and booked into county jail. On April 12, 47 days after Martin was shot and killed, Zimmerman made his first court appearance. His arraignment was set for May 29.

In the meantime, Zimmerman will stay in jail, segregated from the other inmates. He has access to the commissary, where he purchased $79.84 worth of items.

I have an honest question. Are you talking about the black hatred of whites? Because I always judge sombody by their actions, not the color of their skin. Don't get me wrong, if you are dressed like a gang banger and acting like one, it would be moronic to not be concerned for the safety of your person and belongings. I do not get the same from many people of color. NAACP, UNCF, Urban League and many other organizations exist for people of color only. That is racisim.

It's tribalism, not racism. Racism is the fraud that people of the white race are separate, distinct and superior to people of the afro-centric (human) race because the ancestors of the white race came from somewhere else (i.e., another planet).

8 Months ago in the Tampa area a White Iraq veteran went to the park with his 8 year old daughter. At the park a black older man harassed a skate boarder for skate boarding in area not authorized too, when the veteran told the man to chill, an arguement began ending with the veteran being shot and killed in front of his daughter for stand you ground, Was this a hate Crime ? Not by the police and the shooter had no charges against him. Stand your ground may not be a good idea, but doesn't make you a racist.

Why do you have to play white versus black? George Zimmerman self identifies as Hispanic.

a situation such as you describe would have never happened. A black Zimmerman would have been arrested on site. His claim of self defense would have resulted in a plea to a lesser charge because his public defender would have advised him about the challenges that we would have convincing the jury at trial.

These organizations exists because of the way black people have been treated in the past I.E. SLAVERY and are still being treated. Until your skin turn black you will never know what it's like, the way white people (Hispanics also) act towards you and your not even bothering anyone just trying to live like everybody else. Clutching their purses, clicking their alarms when you walk by their car, one day I was on the elevator, a Hispanic couple get on holding their child who could barely speak and just as I was about to say how cute the child is, the child looks at me and says "Nicca Nicca" everyone knew what the child was trying to say and the mother just keep saying "no no" but that's what people are teaching their kids these days that's way racism will always be, the Devil he's winning right there, but he has already lost like so many others if they don't repent and believe and get HATE out of their hearts, so until you become black YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE.

Did you really bring up slavery? Seriously? how long ago was that abolished? Get over it and move on!

By far, the racism I see in this country is black -vs- everyone who's not black. Oh woe-is-you, the downtrodden!

Get a job, get off welfare, cleanup your neighborhood, learn to speak, and act like a civilized member of society and you'll be treated like one.

Well, said. I am not "black", but your words are well said and I empathize. It truly is sad in these days of so many modern things, that we still fight over race, religion and such. I have had little trouble from anyone of any race, even when I worked in the most "dangerous" neighborhoods. Either I was lucky or maybe the "scary" people were not as bad as society would want me to believe. Seems we could all benefit from sharing the wonderful new things in our diversity, instead of fighting.

Yes, you are right. I am white – my mother was a racist. She never could say much of anything positive about blacks. When I was 10 she made us move because the neighborhood was becoming too black. That was years ago, I'm 53 now, but I still hear people talk like that. It's not everyone. Still, a lot of people don't get it. All I can say is that it's really sad that we have not learned much over the years. I really think our whole culture is messed up and it's going to take a lot of work to fix it.

i really don't want to say this. i really, really don't. but i feel it's necessary. what i'm about to say can be taken as racist, and definitely as euro- or amerocentric. i truly mean no offense, but i know offense will be taken.

you are aware that, with your slavery argument, that many, possibly most of the slaves from africa were sold to europeans either directly in bondage or indirectly through having their locations provided by other africans, are you not? those same africans that sold these slaves are the ancestors of the warlords and tribals that currently populate the african continent. additionally, many countries in africa controlled by african people are havens for pirates and criminals, or are run by genocidal maniacs.

the long and short of what i'm trying to say is, isn't it possible that african-american citizens (many of whom were descended from slaves) actually ended up with a somewhat better deal? i know slavery was horrifying, and i wouldn't wish it upon anyone, but you do realize that while the slaves were working long hours under harsh conditions for very little reward more than food, water, and housing, africans were busy killing each other en masse in tribal warfare over worse (and less) food, impure water, and unforgiving desert, correct?

i don't want to make waves. i just think that bringing up the whole slavery argument every time something race-related comes up is a cop-out argument. then again, i don't think race ever should have come into play in these arguments. ah well.

You stated that the child could barely talk and was saying Nicca Nicca, how do you know that the child was not trying to ask for a pacifier or some type of food he or she liked. The mother may have been saying no, no because it was not time for a snack or something. Just like the Zimmerman case people forming their own perceptions of what others think, say or do.

Jason is evidence that racism exists today. Why is he dressed like a gang banger because he's wearing a hoodie. Everybody where's hoodies. The gang banger connotation is because he's black. Tell me one person, black or white who doesn't have a hoodie in their wardrobe. Exactly what action did Trayvon take Jason that was gang-like? Walking, drinking his iced tea, eating his skittles or talking on the phone with his girlfriend.

Zimmerman was carrying a loaded gun and Trayvon was acting like a gangster? If Zimmerman is such a bad ass, put him out on the street with his 9mm weapon and let him stand his ground now! Tough guy - so brave with his gun against an unarmed teen ager running away from him.

If I had been Martin and realized that someone had been following me, I probably would have turned and confronted rather than risk having a stranger follow me to my family. Doesn't neighborhood watch mean to watch what is going on. It doesn't mean to stalk and attack. 911 was called, police were on the way, why not stay in his vehicle like he was instructed to do and wait for the police. Was the kid vandalizing? Was he doing anything except going back to his father's house? Why engage him until he is observed doing something wrong. Especially when you had been told by the police, who were en-route, to back off and leave the matter to them. How would any of you feel if you were in the kid's shoes? There is a man in civilian clothes stalking you. You do not know he is a neighborhood watchman! He tries to physically detain you, you would probably be scared to death. Then you try to defend yourself and he shoots you. At a minimum, this is manslaughter, if not murder.

Well this makes so much headlines while other cases don't because other cases where white people are the victims actually get investigated thoroughly and the criminals go to jail. On the other hand, in this case, investigations were not done, there was no background check or drug check done on Zimmerman while Treyvon was checked for drugs. How does that make sense? Its not the crime itself, because sadly crimes do happen everywhere, its the fact that Zimmerman has not been arrested.

If Trayvon had simply talked, there wouldn't be a fist fight to win or lose. Once Trayvon turned to violence, the situation spiraled out of control. GZ shot him in the middle of the chest because that is where you shoot someone trying to kill you. It is the biggest target. It is likely to stop your assailant. It is less likely the bullet will miss and hit someone who isn't trying to kill you.

ok, lets get some things cleared out here... for all of you that are calling for Zimmerman to be arrested LOOK AT THE FLORIDA STATUE between 726 and 733 and tell me what can you charge him with, with a clear understanding that he broke this law... thats the first thing, now lets get another FACT clear, the MEDIA cannot say that Mr Martin has done any wrong BECAUSE HE IS A MINOR therefor he will not have a public record because he is under age... but I know he has had a few encounters with Seminole County, To the Media, please stop posting a picture of a little kid, at 6'2" inches he is anything but little. Mr. Zimmerman was beaten up pretty good, a little kid could not really beat up a grown ass man.. So,with all of this being said, lets see what the medical records say about what lacerations or injuries Zimmerman had, let the media take a look at Mr Martins juvenile log from both dade county and Seminole. and can someone please tell me what the hell is his mom putting trademarks on "justice for travis" and other stupid things like this?? WOW if someone is going to get paid might as well be the mom huh??? I was blown away with this one.. Anyways, enough of the venting, if Mr. Zimmerman did it with bad intentions there is one law and one answer that he will have to give that is our Mighty GOD!! who sees all.. Please be open minded, and ask yourself, do you really want to see him arrested and then freed because of lack of evidence or not enough grounds to prove without a reasonable doubt??? if so you would be more ignorant than the group who "put a bounty" on the guy.. ok, ok, im done!!!

Zimmerman has had two charges against him…one was for aggravated assault on a police officer and the other was an restraining order from his ex girlfriend...sounds like to me that he had a quick temper and could not control himself..

Also Zimmerman caused the conflict when he got out of his SUV and went looking for Martin on foot. If someone followed me in the SUV for three blocks and then chased after me on foot at that point I do not know what your intentions are so I will defend myself....Zimmerman went looking for trouble and shot an innocent kid in the process.....

Scottish Mama - Zimmerman went to the doctor the day after. I'm sure the doctor has records and maybe photos of Zimmerman's condition.

A mockery? So the family should wait until all the facts are determined? And how do the police get all the facts? Who do they interview? The police don't want to talk to Zimmerman for some reason like they are scared and he is the number one witness. So he should go free like nothing happen? Maybe that is a good idea just let him go FREE! and let see what happens!

I want to say how sorry I am that this happen to Trayvon and his Family.. It is wrong and Zimmerman messed up big time.. He made a big mistake, but why aren't people talking about how we do have young black men that are knuckle heads doing stupid things like robbing people and shooting people. We need to use Trayvon's death as a call to get are own young men to act better so the public will not think of us this way... I am scared sometimes in the hood myself.. Guns have been pulled on me. My best friend was shot for nothing... LET'S USE THIS TO FIX ARE BAD KIDS SO WE WILL NOT BE RACIALLY PROFILED..But what people must know, it is obvious that Trayvon was not a bad kid, but we do have bad kids who do bad thing and they happen to be people of color and white, so lets fix are bad young men... But Media usually show the kids of color mostly...LETS TALK ABOUT THAT.. You can wear anything, but the bad kids have made hoodies look bad..LET TALK ABOUT THAT... Very sorry Trayvon and Trayvon's family had to suffer for the knuckle heads...

Bad kids come in all colors and sizes, the difference is that black kids are unfairly profiled without evidence.

      March 28, 2012 at 8:09 pm | Report abuse |
    • B

Exactly. Black male teens get racially profiled not for being black but for the violent and criminal behavior that all too often goes along with it. Racial profiling will stop when blacks stop the very disproportionate amount of stealing and violence they commit.

A lot of kids emulate rappers who flaunt criminal activity. That certainly doesn't decrease the amount of profiling.

Do you have a comprehension problem as well?
When told to not pursue his response was "OK" IT WAS CLEAR AS DAY ON THE 911 CALL TAPES.
he returned to his car at that time.
Lying and making up stories isnt going to make your thug wannabe Trayvon seem like the victim.
He was the one who initiated the confrontation, until that point Zimmerman had not said a word to him.
In reality, Zimmerman probably saved a lot of lives by shooting the thug.
He was already busted for Drugs, Attacking a bus driver, and posession of burglary tools and stolen jewelry.
All by the age of 17.
      Your community must be proud.
This is the kind of guy i would hang my reputation on the line for.

Martin was a criminal/thug who was walking inside a gated community. What the hell was he doing there? The evidence clearly shows he attacked Zimmerman and was shot in self-defense. All those wearing hoodies in honor of this thug should be ashamed.

Zimmerman was a self-appointed vigilante who is being protected by his "judge" father. Evidence clearly showed he was informed "not" to pursue, but chose to anyway.

ONe, he was staying in the community so he had every right to be there. Two, Zimmerman pursued and confronted the kid, which he had no authority to do so because he was just walking, not breaking any laws.

Ankenyman, what evdenice does Zimmerman have?? His step-mother and father lives in the neighborhood that's what he was doing there.. So Zimmerman following Martin for three blocks in his SUV, then got out and chased him is self-defense?? If that's self defense then we all are screwed!!!!

Wearing a hoodie with the hood up in 80 degree weather in a gated community is more than enough to get anyone to at least do a double take.
Especially when your not normally in that area.
Martin did not have to go after Zimmerman, he could have just continued on.

AllBlack - 911 operators are not the police. They said, we don't need you to do that. They didn't say don't do it. Zimmerman perhaps wanted to keep up with and not lose sight of Martin until the police came.

At this point, several news organizations, commentators, and anchors; and several people whose whole claim to fame in this world is based on expressing outrage; are all up to their noses in the stink they have made painting Mr. Zimmerman as a cold blooded killer. They can't back off now, no matter how clear it becomes that Zimmerman was the real victim, and was forced to defend his life against a physically agressive attacker.
