Mississippi governor signs bill tightening restrictions on abortion providers

Mississippi's governor has signed into law a bill requiring physicians performing abortions in the state to be a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist and to have admitting privileges at an area hospital.

"I believe that all human life is precious, and as governor, I will work to ensure that the lives of the born and unborn are protected in Mississippi," Gov. Phil Bryant said in a statement Monday.

He has previously expressed his desire that the state become "abortion free."

Seven other states require abortion providers to have hospital privileges, but no other state requires that an abortion provider be an OB/GYN, said Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager for the Guttmacher Institute in Washington.

Though the 1973 Supreme Court landmark decision in Roe v. Wade made abortion legal in all 50 states, Mississippi's law could make the state the first where no abortions could be performed, she said.

"It's an attempt to eliminate access without taking on Roe directly."

Mississippi has only one abortion facility, Jackson Women's Health Organization. Should it close, Mississippi women seeking abortions would have to leave the state.

So it is ok to challenge a supreme court decision now? I thought last week the right wing were really down on Obama for making a political comment about an important decision to be made. I mean wouldn't it be protecting many children who are uninsured through no fault of their own from having no healthcare? I guess this case is somehow different.

alright!...make the meat butchers certify...huh ms dixon...nah wouldn't you want the most qualified, most knowledgable, and most capable to murder your baby? it is a standard of practice in the medical community to certify one is able to perform its medical duties...why should these hackers be exempt???

My babies are alive and well. I do not agree that an abortion is the right thing to do. I just don't want an angry nut like you making that decision for me, or my wife. People like you only want to control what others do, while claiming to want the government out of our lives. You would only protect them while in the womb. If you were being honest, I imagine you could care less about the fetus. It just masks the real hate you hold for others rather than a concern for anyone.

Ridiculous... Roe v Wade was clear on leaving the option open to women to seek a legal abortion.
Agree or not, that is law and that is a womans right. I think these laws are just chipping away at womens rights with a baloney excuse of abject morality.

I say again, you want the children protected in the womb not after they arrive. Let them starve, die due to no healthcare...on and on and on. I do not agree an abortion is the right thing to do. I do not set myself up to decide for a woman what is right for her body. It is not the governments place, you know the Tea Party mantra.

Just wondering how many unwanted children you have adopted. What is so wrong with removing a few fertilized cells from a body if the woman does not want another baby? Her body, her egg, her decision. Of course that is in the earliest term of the pregancy. Isn't that so much better than having it and then abusing it? We already have enough abused unwanted children here and if that is not enough we bring them in from other countries for the American tax payer to support. Why is it ok to fertilize an egg in a petri dish and then insert it into a woman? Not necessairly the owner of the egg, but not ok to rid one of an unwanted pregancy. Don't mention God – if he had wanted that woman to conceive it would have happened. He had nothing to do with that petri dish.

Mmmmm I do believe after reading your many one liners that you have a problem. Either you hate women or you wish you were one. Maybe you are a female who can't have children – if so my sympathies are with you but you need to temper your comments just a little. You are welcome to your thoughts and decisions and but we each believe what we believe as you. As asked earlier How many unwanted children have you adopted?

But once an unwanted child is born – then what? Will Republicans gladly feed, cloth them and take care of them if the single mom can't? We all know the answer to that. There is nothing more wonderful than a loved, wanted child and nothing more sad than one that is born unwanted and abused all their life only to repeat the same when they have chilfren. Don't even mention adoption because Americans go over seas when they want to adopt children. A little African baby is more special than an American baby? What is that all about?
